Summary
- The Halo franchise is in transition with a new Unreal Engine 5 installment in the works, possibly coming to PlayStation and Nintendo.
- Halo Studios is developing multiple new titles, including a potential Halo: Combat Evolved remake.
- Fan-made Halo-inspired game Spartan Survivors offers ample content, coming to Xbox consoles and PC.
It’s fair to say that the Halo series has experienced a downturn following the release of Halo Infinite in 2021, which sparked controversy. Since then, Microsoft, the owner of the franchise, has primarily focused its efforts on other major intellectual properties. At present, Halo is undergoing a transformation. The development studio responsible for the series, now known as Halo Studios, made significant changes last year by rebranding and announcing their intention to use Unreal Engine 5 for the next Halo game instead of their proprietary Slipspace Engine. Additionally, rumors indicate that Halo may soon appear on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, marking a departure from its 24-year run as an Xbox exclusive title.
While Halo Studios has acknowledged their work on several upcoming Halo projects, details about these games remain scarce. Some sources claim that the studio might be creating a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, but beyond this, fans have yet to learn more about Halo Studios’ future plans. It is speculated that Microsoft and Halo Studios may reveal a new Halo game at the June Xbox Games Showcase, but its release date is still uncertain. In the interim, an unofficial Halo game is available for fans to play in the present.
Spartan Survivors is a New Halo Fan Game That’s Inspired by Vampire Survivors

Despite Being Completely Free, Spartan Survivors Has a Decent Amount of Content in It
Back in November 2024, a team of French podcasters specializing in Halo, known as Bathrobe Cast, revealed their plans to develop a game inspired by Vampire Survivors for the Halo series, cleverly titled Spartan Survivors. This upcoming game combines roguelike and bullet-heaven combat mechanics, while maintaining a humorous, Halo-inspired visual style. The game boasts nine playable characters, each with their distinct weapons, abilities, and stats. Players can either embody the iconic Master Chief or opt for other characters such as the Arbiter and ODST Ace.
As per Bathrobe Cast’s statement, Spartan Survivors features 10 distinct stages, some of which draw inspiration from renowned campaign levels in early Halo games. Moreover, the game offers 5 different game modes, 21 assorted weapons, 56 upgrades, 105 evolutions, and 14 perks. Despite being a fan-made creation, Spartan Survivors boasts a generous amount of content. Bathrobe Cast suggests that players can anticipate “hours of uncomplicated entertainment” from the game.
In Addition to PC, Spartan Survivors is Also Surprisingly Coming to Xbox Consoles
Initially slated for a dual launch on PC through Steam and Itch.io on May 25, 2025, the game “Spartan Survivors” has only seen its Itch.io release so far. Unlike most fan games that are PC-exclusive due to legal complications, this one will also be available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platforms. The exact launch dates for these console versions haven’t been announced yet, but according to Bathrobe Cast, they are expected to drop on Microsoft consoles sometime during the summer of 2025.
It’s quite remarkable that an unauthorized Halo game is set to debut on an Xbox console, given the general reluctance of platform owners towards other companies using their intellectual properties. For instance, PlayStation and Nintendo have refused to allow fan-made games like God of War and Mario to be released on their marketplaces. Generally speaking, one would assume Microsoft would follow suit and block a game such as Spartan Survivors from appearing on its consoles. However, it seems that Microsoft has granted Bathrobe Cast the approval to launch it on Xbox, owing to the Xbox Game Usage rules. Fan-created games for Xbox are rare, so it’s refreshing to see Spartan Survivors, a game inspired by the Halo franchise, join the ranks of Microsoft’s consoles.
