Enthusiasts of “Nobody’s Boy Remi,” or those who appreciate classic anime, can look forward to a legal viewing opportunity, as the series is slated for a U.S. re-release!
As a fan of vintage anime from the ’60s through the ’90s, it can be quite challenging to find those timeless series on official streaming platforms like Crunchyroll and Netflix, as they often prioritize more recent content. However, Crunchyroll, in particular, does make an effort to stream some of the classics from yesteryears.
As a diehard anime fan, I’m thrilled to announce that my long-awaited addition to the collection has arrived! AnimEigo (MediaOCD) has secured the rights to bring us “Nobody’s Boy Remi” on Blu-ray, setting sail on May 13, 2025. This remarkable set comes complete with a whopping four Blu-ray discs! The best part? It offers the original Japanese audio track, the captivating French dub, and English subtitles for those who prefer to follow along in their own language. I can hardly wait to immerse myself in this timeless tale once more!
Customers purchasing from the MediaOCD store will receive an exclusive slipcover, and since it’s the first-ever 3D anime, it comes with complimentary 3D glasses.
3D Anime in the 1970s?
Originally airing in Japan between 1977 and 1978, “Nobody’s Boy Remi” spanned 51 episodes. However, one might wonder how a series that old could be presented in 3D. The answer lies in the use of innovative technology. This anime was crafted to induce the Pulfrich effect – an optical illusion where the visual cortex perceives depth in an object because it is signaled by the eyes at slightly different times.
Personally, I’m thrilled to share that the 3D effect is just an added bonus here! You can savor the show without needing those glasses. Without them, you’ll find a seamless, fluid viewing experience – quite different from many 3D presentations today. But if you do decide to put on the glasses, you’ll find an even more immersive experience!
What Is Nobody’s Boy Remi About?
This anime is incredibly moving and heartbreaking. The story revolves around Remi, a destitute boy living in 19th-century France. However, his life takes a turn when his father sells him to Vitalis, a street performer who travels from place to place. Although Vitalis may not initially appear cruel, Remi will quickly discover that street life can be brutally tough.
Acclaimed filmmaker Osamu Dezaki, known for ‘Ashita no Joe’ and ‘Tomorrow’s Joe’, was responsible for both the series and its 1980 release. The script and storyline were created by Haruya Yamazaki (‘Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro’), Tsunehisa Ito (‘The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion’), and Keiko Sugie (‘The Rose of Versailles: I’ll Love You As Long As I Live’). Takeo Watanabe handled the music composition, a role he later reprised for ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’s soundtrack in 1979.
The anime, manufactured by TMS, originally surfaced in the U.S. through ImaginAsia; however, its distribution was confined and quickly faded into relative obscurity, making it quite elusive to track down.
