In the narrative of My Hero Academia, the tale unfolds across two main aspects: school-related activities and heroic missions. These components form various story arcs that protagonist Midoriya and other characters experience during their journey. However, when it comes to our protagonist’s personal growth, there are several pivotal moments where he is challenged to surpass his own capabilities, demonstrating his worthiness of inheriting One For All and upholding All Might’s legacy.
Through his adventures, Midoriya not only learns new abilities and strategies with One For All in battle but also undergoes significant emotional growth. By the end of the series, he transforms dramatically from his initial character, and looking back on his journey, these phases are crucial for the development of this passionate young hero.
8. Joint Training
Midoriya Communicates With One For All’s Previous Users To Learn More About Its Potential
- Episodes: 91-101
Despite the Joint Training arc being a contentious point among fans due to its perceived slow pace and minimal high-stakes events, it nonetheless offers crucial advancements for Midoriya, notably his grasp of One For All. In the course of his fight training, Midoriya inexplicably releases an array of black whips, initially finding it challenging to master their control.
In the midst of the chaotic situation, Midoriyaa encounters Banjo, a past user of One For All. Banjo informs him that eventually, all of their individual powers will be passed onto him. This newfound ability holds immense power, but learning that he would ultimately possess seven overall abilities entirely alters Midoriyaa’s perspective on the Quirk and his future aspirations with it.
7. Provisional License Exam
Midoriya Uses The PLE To Create A Brand-New Highly Mobile Fighting Style
- Episodes: 51-61
In the early stages of the series, Midoriya comes to understand that solely using his hands for inflicting damage might not be the most effective strategy due to its toll on his body. To counteract this issue, he chooses to emphasize his legs more, utilizing his agile Shoot Style which he initially experimented with during the Provisional License Exam to gain an advantage over other competitors.
After All Might loses most of his power, this situation presents an exam for Midoriya, testing if he can manage on his own without a mentor showing the way. In the end, Midoriya demonstrates to himself that he’s ready to carry on All Might’s legacy, particularly with his innovative new fighting style, which helps him overcome many of his past limitations.
6. U.A. Sports Festival
Midoriya Gets To Test Out His New Quirk In-Action Against Plenty Of Tough Opponents
- Episodes: 13-25
At the U.A. Sports Festival, Midoriya could initially use his newly acquired One For All ability against genuine opponents, but it’s safe to say he encounters much more than he anticipated. In an intense battle with Shinso, Midoriya would venture into the innerworld of One For All for the first time, revealing a hint of the immense potential hidden within this legendary power.
In this thrilling arc, I found myself deeply connecting with Todoroki like never before. Our intense showdown was a true test, challenging me beyond measure. Yet, it was precisely these trials that brought us closer together. The U.A. Sports Festival marked my initial significant challenge within the series, serving as a crucial stepping stone for my future adventures. It provided an early glimpse into wielding One For All, setting the stage for the captivating journey ahead.
5. U.A. School Festival
Midoriya Realizes That Saving A Person Can Be Done Emotionally, Not Just Physically
- Episodes: 81-86
From his childhood days spent watching All Might in awe, Midoriya harbored the dream of becoming a valiant hero. However, figuring out how to make this dream a reality turned out to be more challenging than he had initially thought. Despite successfully rescuing a girl named Eri from the clutches of Overhaul, it was evident that she hadn’t fully recovered following her return to U.A., as the emotional trauma she endured left deep psychological scars that hindered her ability to find genuine happiness.
It was great that the Summer School Festival was coming up soon, giving Midoriya an opportunity to make Eri smile by performing together in a spectacular show before a huge audience. This experience helped Midoriya learn more about how a hero can help someone in trouble beyond just fighting. In this storyline, Midoriya also used his mid-air blast projectiles for the first time against Gentle Criminal, and their encounter served as a significant milestone in his mastery of One For All.
4. Villain Hideout Raid
All Might Finally Hands The Mantle Over To Midoriya, Giving Him A Newfound Focus And Resolve
Despite the fact that the Hideout Raid arc is often recalled for the spectacular battle between All Might and All For One towards its conclusion, it’s filled with significant instances for Midoriya throughout this gripping early storyline. At the onset of the arc, following the discovery of Bakugo’s location after his abduction by the League, Midoriya opts to disregard U.A.’s advice and embarks on a quest to find the impetuous hero himself. This seemingly minor action underscores that Midoriya’s instinctive urge to rescue people remains strong despite any circumstances.
The Hideout Raid storyline signifies the instance when All Might formally hands over the duty of guarding the world from All For One to Midoriya. This occurs as he gestures towards Midoriya and states, “It’s your turn now.” At this juncture, Midoriya shifts his focus from pursuing All Might to upholding his legacy and leaving a unique imprint on history by perfecting the power of One For All.
3. Forest Training Camp
An Epic Clash Pushes Midoriya To New Heights Of Power
- Episodes: 39-45
At the beginning stages of the narrative in “My Hero Academia”, Izuku Midoriya didn’t feel compelled to demonstrate to others why being a hero was admirable because he was constantly immersed in individuals pursuing the same goal. However, this made it challenging for him to relate to Kota, a young lad whose parents were heroes who lost their lives on duty, as Kota harbored resentment towards the entire hero community.
When a colossal antagonist known as Muscular unexpectedly intrudes upon the training ground, it presents Midoriya with an ideal moment to demonstrate to Kota that selflessness is the cornerstone of genuine heroes β a trait shared by his deceased parents. Engaging Muscular wholeheartedly with One For All serves not only as a reminder to Midoriya about the potential perils of utilizing his Quirk at maximum capacity without proper preparation and expertise, but also sets the stage for future challenges he must overcome.
2. Dark Hero
Abandoning His Friends Forces Midoriya To Realize That He Can’t Take Down All For One By Himself
- Episodes: 127-138
Following the revelation that One For All could ultimately destroy itself and Shigaraki’s pursuit, Midoriya chooses to act outside the law, signaling the start of the “Dark Hero” phase in his story. Contrasting greatly with his typical cheerful demeanor, this hero transforms into a grim and threatening figure to instill terror in any approaching villains. With his Quirks providing formidable support, Midoriya becomes an undeniable force during this part of the narrative, making him a significant adversary indeed.
Yet, it doesn’t take much time before Midoriya’s classmates from Class 1-A catch up and ultimately persuade him that, while he has been growing stronger, they too have made significant progress. Uraraka delivers a powerful speech emphasizing why Midoriya is worthy of returning to U.A., despite being Shigaraki’s main target. This realization forces Midoriya to understand that there’s no need for him to feel ashamed about seeking help from those around him.
1. Final War
The Final Test Of Midoriya’s Worth As An Inheritor Of One For All
- Episodes: 144-current
As the climactic battle between the heroes and the villains approaches, Midoriya understands that he alone possesses the strength to obliterate and terminate All For One. His goal may be clear, but realizing it is anything but simple, pushing Midoriya to utilize every one of his Quirks simultaneously just to have a remote chance of injuring Shigaraki. Given that Midoriya once struggled even when employing only one of the Vestige’s powers, witnessing him effortlessly switch between multiple of them mid-battle and unleashing powerful attacks like the Gears, underscores the incredible progress he has made in mastering his distinctive Quirks.
In this particular storyline, Midoriya mends his peculiar bond with Toga when they unexpectedly meet before confronting Shigaraki. As for Shigaraki, it’s worth mentioning that Midoriya put up a tough fight against this incredibly powerful villain for quite some time. Eventually, he sacrificed his Quirk to free Shigaraki from All For One’s influence, which enabled him to fulfill his Quirk’s purpose and ultimately become one of the most esteemed heroes in history.
