Ever since it debuted with its first game in 2001, the Animal Crossing series has amassed a vast number of Non-Player Characters (NPCs) and Villagers across various installments. It’s not hard to see why these characters have become such a cherished part of the series – many fans even have their preferred Animal Crossing Villagers!
Although many Villagers populate the game, a fair number of NPCs remain unfamiliar to players because they are exclusive to certain Animal Crossing titles or only appear under specific conditions. Since not every player encounters these NPCs, their popularity doesn’t match that of familiar faces like Isabelle, Blathers, or well-known Villagers such as Ankha. It’s high time for these lesser-known NPCs to step into the limelight.
Rare and Random Animal Crossing NPCs
In some games like “Animal Crossing: City Folk,” certain non-player characters (NPCs) may randomly pop up, but it’s quite uncommon. A good example of such an NPC is Master Frillard. Players might come across him at the Marquee, standing in for Dr. Shrunk on rare instances. Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict exactly when Frillard performs, but by completing a specific set of tasks, players can increase their chances of encountering this frilled lizard. They should speak with the Marquee clerk and choose one of six emotions that Frillard teaches – bashfulness, inspiration, outrage, sleepiness, thought, and agreement. However, not all these emotions may be available every time. Frillard doesn’t appear in any other “Animal Crossing” titles physically, but Dr. Shrunk might refer to Frillard’s jokes in “New Leaf,” and if invited to The Roost in “New Horizons,” he might share some of his humor.
In the world of Animal Crossing, Don Resetti is another character who often shows up when players repeatedly reset their game. Originally debuting in Animal Crossing, Don steps in when a player resets for the fifth time, his name being a nod to “don’t reset.” Contrary to what his name might suggest, Don is more laid-back compared to his younger brother. You can encounter Don Resetti again in City Folk and he will reappear after five resets, as well as occasionally at the Reset Surveillance Center if a traffic cone is missing or it’s past 8:00 pm. In New Leaf, he appears on the sixth reset; in New Horizons, he makes his presence known more frequently than in any other Animal Crossing title.
Animal Crossing NPCs with Specific Circumstances
In the games Animal Crossing: City Folk, and later ones like New Leaf and New Horizons, certain Non-Player Characters (NPCs) make an appearance only under specific conditions. For instance, Frillard and Don Resetti might show up randomly, or require specific circumstances to visit. One such NPC is Serena, who appears at the town fountain in City Folk when a player throws an axe into it. After her arrival, she’ll engage the player in a conversation, asking questions like “Which axe did you throw?”, “How do I look today?”, and “Did I seem goddessy?”. The player is then asked to pick her left or right hand, and as a reward, they might receive a silver axe, golden axe, the original axe, or nothing at all. It’s important to note that the player’s responses do not influence the outcome. Sadly, Serena doesn’t appear in any titles after City Folk, but she is referenced in New Leaf and New Horizons.
In the games Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+, there’s another unique character named Farley. Similar to Serena, Farley is associated with fountains as he represents the spirit of the wishing well. If a town has a flawless Field Rank for fifteen consecutive days, players will get a brief visit from Farley. After this encounter, they receive a golden axe from him. These rare non-player characters deserve some recognition, hopefully in the next installment of Animal Crossing.
