In the realm of anime, it’s common to find overpoweringly strong protagonists from different worlds, capable of performing extraordinary deeds. Usually, every season features several such characters. However, unlike many other seasons, Winter 2025 seems less fascinated by these overwhelmingly powerful main characters.
In many popular shows set in other worlds, characters lack significant combat powers or have only modest abilities (such as “Headhunted to Another World: From Salaryman to Big Four!”, “The Daily Life of a Middle-Aged Online Shopper in Another World”, “Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!”, and “Re:ZERO”). It’s quite refreshing, yet the collection doesn’t shy away from power fantasies entirely, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Let’s shine a spotlight on the most overpowered isekai anime protagonists in Winter 2025.
A few notes and criteria:
- A protagonist’s strength will be reviewed within the context of their show, so not just compared to each other.
- Only traditional isekai anime will be considered. Therefore, Solo Leveling and Dragon Ball Daima will not be included, even if the definition of isekai could be stretched to include them.
- Only new series and sequels that debuted in Winter 2025 will be considered. Therefore, no Arifureta. Hajime already had his time in the spotlight.
6. Grace/Kenzaburou (From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated!)
An Isekai Villainess Empowered By Kanji
Similar to many anime featuring villainous protagonists in the isekai genre, “From Bureaucrat to Villainess” follows Kenzaburou, a middle-aged man, as he unexpectedly inhabits the role of the game’s villainess, Grace. Struggling to adapt, Kenzaburou finds himself navigating the challenges of convincingly portraying a teenage girl in this new world.
In Kenzaburou’s case, his strongest assets are his parental wisdom, compassionate nature, and knack for telling dad jokes that leave every other character charmed (and even smitten on occasion). However, when it comes to magical prowess, Kenzaburou proves to be stronger than many of his contemporaries. This is primarily because of his extensive knowledge of kanji. In this particular universe, magic is wielded through written words, and Kenzaburou’s use of kanji imbues them with a significant enhancement. Although he wouldn’t stand a chance against the most formidable anime protagonists in terms of raw power, Kenzaburou is undoubtedly above average within his world.
5. Shion (Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World)
Researching, Creating, And Improving Magic
In a somewhat peculiar situation, the character known as Shion is on the verge of immense magical power, but not quite there yet. With an unquenchable fascination for magic, Shion feels disheartened when it appears he has been reborn into a fantasy realm without access to this power. Instead of submitting to his circumstances, Shion becomes determined to study and master magic on his own accord. His relentless pursuit bears fruit as he performs feats that astonish his family members. Remarkably, he even uses the magic he’s discovered to vanquish a goblin – a creature posing a significant threat in this world.
Approximately midway through the anime series, Shion gains proficiency in both lightning and fire magic, and combines them to unleash powerful, spectacular assaults. Moreover, he invests in specialized gear that enhances his ability to wield magic effectively, providing a solid base for him to build upon and deepen his skills further.
4. Tougo Asagaki (The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World)
A Sentai Hero Fueled By The Bonds Of Friendship
In another fun twist, The Red Ranger Transforms into an Adventurer in a Different World is a humorous blend of isekai and sentai anime genres, featuring protagonists who are overpowered. Originally known as Kizuna Red from Power Rangers, Tougo Asagaki finds himself transported to a fantastical realm. Instead of being daunted, he chooses to roll with the absurdity and maintain his role as a hero who serves the people. Remarkably, even in this foreign world, Tougo can morph into his Sentai form and summon five mechanical behemoths that merge to create the stylish Maximum Kizuna Kaiser.
In theory, Tougo appears as an unyielding protagonist in an over-the-top isekai anime; however, this has not always been the reality. His power primarily stems from the connections he maintains with his friends, whether they are fellow Kizuna rangers on Earth or his new world party. In combat situations where he relies solely on martial arts and fundamental abilities, Tougo often loses, typically turning the tide of battle only when another character steps in to assist him. The effectiveness of his mecha is also quite limited, depending heavily on the specific circumstances.
Tougo possesses great strength, yet he’s often belittled due to being trapped in an amusing anime satire where the main character is frequently mocked.
3. Takumi Iruma (Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time)
Blessed By A Goddess And A Well-Rounded Alchemist
On occasion, the title can reveal too much, yet it turns out that Takuma, an exceptional alchemist, stands among the most potent protagonists in isekai anime of Winter 2025. Despite being overpowered, Takuma’s strength lies less in physical combat and more in his extraordinary skill growth, granted by a goddess. His unique gift allows him to develop items such as weapons and armor using minimal resources and ample mana. This ability is not only beneficial but also profitable, although he still has much room for improvement in other aspects.
For clarification, Takuma exhibits impressive combat skills against mid-level monsters. In battle situations, he skillfully employs magic elements such as fire, water, wind, and earth, in addition to his alchemy techniques like Decompose. He also demonstrates exceptional healing abilities. Thanks to the divine blessing he received, his abilities advance effortlessly and swiftly, ensuring he is consistently growing stronger.
2. Kuuro the Cautious (Ishura Season 2)
A Pretty Powerful Isekai Anime MC In A Show Filled With OP Characters
In a departure from typical storytelling, Ishura appears to favor non-traditional protagonists. The first and second seasons boast large ensembles, with each episode primarily focusing on distinct characters, many of whom possess extraordinary abilities and some hailing from other dimensions. Soujirou the Willow-Sword was almost a main character in season 1, and if he were to appear in Winter 2025, he would arguably be the most overpowered character in an isekai anime. However, as of now, he has only made a single appearance in season 2, making him ineligible for this particular discussion.
In the second season, Kuuro the Cautious stands out as the primary character, appearing often and serving as the poster figure for the sequel, although he may not be Ishura’s strongest combatant. Endowed with clairvoyance, he possesses the unique ability to foresee the future, allowing him to anticipate an enemy’s moves and choose the most effective counteraction instinctively, without requiring conscious thought. Despite his recent decline in speed and the wear and tear on his body, his ability makes him almost invincible.
1. Natsuko Hirose (Zenshu)
A God-Like Power With A Few Limitations
Since Zenshu is an original anime, its isekai aspect and the extraordinary power of its protagonist were kept secret until the first episode aired. An animator who had hit a creative roadblock named Natsuko finds herself in the world of the anime film that sparked her passion for animation. As the story of A Tale of Perishing concludes on a somber note, Natsuko yearns to alter its course. This ambition sets off an ability within her that enables her to bring her sketches to life. Equipped with a mystical pen and an uninhibited mindset, she crafts awe-inspiring beings that epitomize the magical realm. With her ability to draw anything she can imagine, she essentially has the power to create virtually anything.
Although it appears that Natsuko possesses an extraordinary ability, she doesn’t have complete mastery over it. She can only utilize this skill when the pen permits, which means she is subject to its whims. Unfortunately for her, she cannot rely on previous drawings as every creation must be fresh and new. To top it off, this power drains Natsuko significantly, often leaving her so weak that she collapses from exhaustion.
