Summary
- NPCs react differently to players based on their achievements & skill levels, offering praise or scorn.
- Advancing in reputation in games like Cyberpunk 2077 or The Elder Scrolls 4 can affect outcomes.
- Completing quests, fighting enemies, and improving reputation gradually influence how NPCs interact with players.
It’s quite astonishing to see that while RPG protagonists are typically called upon to perform extraordinary, almost unbelievable tasks during their journeys, ordinary non-player characters, who exhibit realistic movements, conversations, and actions, seem entirely oblivious to the heroic (or anti-heroic) deeds of the character standing before them.
As a gamer, it’s always rewarding to be recognized, whether for saving the world or being the quickest character with a mix of guns, spells, and bows. At first, NPCs might seem quiet during the early stages of my journey from zero to hero, but as I progress and unlock new abilities or earn a reputation, they’ll start acknowledging me and my accomplishments in fun or humorous ways. It adds a layer of immersion and makes me feel more connected to the game world.
6. Cyberpunk 2077
Making A Name On The Street Is Everything
- Random NPCs will make comments if V has high enough Street Cred and certain missions will offer more options for V to take
Boosting your Street Credibility in Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t merely about gaining a curious look or praise from non-player characters (NPCs). Once you’ve elevated your Street Cred to an impressive level, it starts influencing the results of quests and even confrontations. When individuals recognize that V is a force to be reckoned with, they become more likely to extend trust to a powerful figure known for their excellent reputation, which in turn might provide advantages or assistance.
Boosting your reputation on the street involves nailing performances, impressive feats, progression within the narrative, and climbing up the social ladder of Night City’s elite. If your character becomes well-known, vendors may grant discounts and exclusive access to their hidden merchandise – essentially, unique equipment.
5. Gothic
From The Worm To The Wyvrn Of The Colony
- While hostile to start, NPCs progressively accept the player character as they advance through skill levels and the story
Initially, in the game titled “Gothic“, your character starts off as an unremarkable, unknown prisoner with no influential connections. However, by journey’s end, they would have encountered and overcome various factions and adversaries (not without considerable struggle), earning them a legendary status within the prison. Being addressed as “brother” becomes a well-deserved title of respect.
Initially, some non-player characters (NPCs) feel free to physically confront the player character if they cross paths. However, by the game’s conclusion, these NPCs will be cautious and may even flee when the player brandishes their weapon, understanding that they are no match for the player.
4. The Witcher 3
From Reviled And Revered (And Occasionally Still Reviled)

- Local NPCs will make harsh or kind comments depending on Geralt’s actions, loyalties, and monster kills
In the time when The Witcher 3 takes place, Geralt of Riveria has already gained legendary status (though many people may still harbor mistrust towards witchers), but that doesn’t guarantee friendly reception from peasants living in remote areas. They will only show favor if they directly profit from his monster-slaying skills.
As the player progresses through various quests in ‘The Witcher 3’, they might overhear townsfolk and villagers chattering about the protagonist’s actions. While Geralt may receive accolades for his valiant deeds, he can also face criticism. If Geralt crosses a faction, its members will remind him of it as he passes by. If Geralt is stingy with his clients, they might remember his miserliness. However, if he’s generous, the people will embrace their hero warmly.
3. Fallout: New Vegas
The Courier That Changed The Fate Of Vegas
- Both random NPCs and major NPCs will react differently depending on the build and story steps the player has made and completed for their courier
Fallout: New Vegas stands out for its intricate narrative paths and responsive gameplay. Characters in this game react to the player in various ways, such as street comments about the player’s allegiances with factions, unexpected run-ins with thugs attempting to rob an unlucky courier, and even key plot points where a significant character will acknowledge the player’s past accomplishments directly.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that my interactions with Mr House, Benny, or Caesar can take diverse turns based on the amount of legwork my courier has done, and this is determined by the number and manner of quests completed. Neglecting key steps might lead to ridicule, but even adversarial NPCs will reluctantly recognize my achievements if I’ve accumulated enough of them.
2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
The Smallfolk Always Respect A Knight In Shining Armor
- Peasants and lords react differently toward those in different classes, and Henry’s station is acknowledged both high and low
In the game, “Kingdom Come: Deliverance”, there’s a noticeable departure from historical reality – the protagonist, Henry, transforms from a common peasant into a renowned knight. As he accomplishes remarkable feats and progresses through the ranks, other characters in the game start addressing him as “Sir Knight”. This is more apparent once he dons his impressive armor sets, which clearly signal his newfound status.
In contrast to fantasy games where costly armor sets were conveniently found in treasure chests, Henry must genuinely acquire them by winning over his superiors through kindness and service. Although less dramatic, performing tasks or favors for specific Non-Player Characters (NPCs) and factions will increase their affection towards Henry, which also extends to the broader community.
1. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
From Prison Escapee To A Much-Admired Citizen Of The Empire
- NPCs will comment on the player’s skills, attributes, and faction reputation, and after certain quest story steps
Beginning life in the world of Oblivion isn’t easy. The Hero of Kvatch initially finds themselves at the lowest rung, without any prophecy to guide them. Instead, they must work hard to gain recognition from those around them. This can be achieved by improving their skills, climbing the ranks within guilds, or protecting Tamriel from external dangers – all tasks that call for perseverance and commitment.
As the player roams the streets, various NPCs will start to comment on their impressive feats. They might admire a powerful shield arm, acknowledge a prominent member of the Mage’s Guild, or thank them for protecting Cyrodiil from a Daedric prince. Not to mention, the ever-popular fan of “Elder Scrolls” will show their adoration once the player earns the title of Arena Champion.
