By exploring an alternate timeline of the Cold War, WARNO simulates a scenario where NATO and the Warsaw Pact engaged in battle across Europe. As a high-speed Real-Time Strategy game, players are immediately thrust into the action, charged with seizing vital territories and maintaining control long enough to secure victory.
In terms of a competitive setting, WARNO boasts numerous divisions that were historically part of either NATO or the Warsaw Pact during their time. Each division carries its unique strengths and weaknesses. Some are heavily ground-focused, while others excel in air superiority. The challenge lies in the fact that players must select a division prior to engaging in a match, which could initially seem overwhelming due to the wide variety of choices available for newcomers.
This list solely focuses on the sections offered with the standard version of the game, disregarding any additional content from downloadable expansions.
10. 11th Arm Cavalry
NATO, United States
If you’re aiming for a substantial ground impact, the 11th Arm Cavalry might not provide the optimal choice on the blue team. The divisions in the artillery, tank, and infantry sectors generally perform well at their best, but not exceptionally so.
To clarify, this division serves as a sanctuary for enthusiasts of the F16-C model. The aviation classification encompasses all versions of the F16-C, such as two air superiority types, cluster, SEAD, high-explosive, and anti-tank. Interestingly, there are some A-10A bombers offered at a reduced cost, but regrettably, no Napalm carriers are included in this collection.
11th Arm Cavalry provides the top-tier M1A1 Abrams tank model, a choice that certainly doesn’t disappoint, and its performance significantly improves when paired with the German Jaguar 2 anti-tank units from the west.
9. K.d.A. Bezirk Erfurt
Warsaw Pact, Soviet Union
In any 10v10 game, Division K.d. A. Bezird Erfurt is a valuable asset due to its powerful artillery units. This division boasts the BM-30 Smerch, the top artillery unit in the game, known for its exceptional penetration and long range with explosive cluster bombs. These characteristics make it an excellent choice to drive enemy units from their positions. In addition, this division also has access to the Napalm version of the BM-21, as well as the BM-24, both of which are versatile multiple rocket launchers with mid-range capabilities.
As a fervent admirer, I must say that the aerial contingent maintains a significant distance from the artillery, housing older versions of MiGs and Sukhois. However, it boasts at least one aircraft for every category, ranging from Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), Napalm, Cluster, High Explosive, Rocket, to Anti-Tank models.
Instead of the anti-air unit being depleted, it has been reinforced by 9K37 units boasting radar-guided missiles with a remarkable range of 6 kilometers and an accuracy of 55%. The 9K33 units offer slightly less effective performance, roughly equating to about 50% of the previous unit’s stats.
8. 8th Infantry Division
NATO, United States
Among the proficient military divisions within NATO, the 8th Infantry is recognized for its robust collection of air defense units. One such unit is the I-Hawk system, equipped with powerful surface-to-air missiles that boast a high degree of precision, hitting their targets approximately 55% of the time.
Under the artillery division, the 8th Infantry provides the High-Explosive version of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270, along with M110A2 howitzers capable of inflicting significant destruction.
Regarding dominance in the air, this division includes both anti-aircraft and cluster versions of the F16-C fighter jet. Although it may not surpass the F15C Eagle, the F16-C remains a formidable adversary for both the MiG-29 and Su-27S.
As a dedicated fan, I must say, the versatility of this U.S. division truly shines in the infantry and recon categories. What sets it apart is the array of options it offers. The majority of its infantry squads are equipped with robust anti-tank units, enhancing their survivability against formidable tanks and armored vehicles.
7. 1st Armoured Division
NATO, United Kingdom
The United Kingdom’s 1st Armoured Division stands as the nation’s premier division for tank warfare and air dominance, offering formidable resistance against both the 39-YA and 79-YA. In terms of tank capabilities and air superiority units, it ranks supreme. The Phantom F.3 is capable of matching the MiG-29 and Su-27S in certain aspects, but may have some drawbacks when compared directly. However, it remains competitive and able to engage in high-level combat with these formidable opponents.
To put it simply, it’s worth noting that the 1st Armoured Division is rather sparse in its anti-aircraft and artillery capabilities. As for countering air threats, the division primarily relies on a tracked Rapiers system, which equips manually guided missiles, though their High-Explosive and Suppression performance leaves much to be desired. Regarding artillery support, unfortunately, there are no Multiple Rocket Launcher (MRL) units available.
In this British division, we offer several tank unit choices, led by the formidable Challenger Mk.3, which provides robust competition for the Soviet Union’s T-80UD, although it consistently falls short in terms of statistics. However, what truly bolsters the power of this division are its standalone anti-tank units, capable of firing up to 16 missiles with a penetration rating of 23.
6. 79-YA GV.
Warsaw Pact, Soviet Union
79th Army Division boasts a variety of solid units across all categories. It’s particularly strong in infantry and reconnaissance units, providing a good foundation for your ground and air strategies respectively. However, when it comes to artillery, the Warsaw Pact has stronger options available. The only exceptional artilleryman here is the BM-21 Grad, equipped with High Explosive ammunition, which is ideal for taking out vehicles but lacks effectiveness against infantry.
79-YA provides Napalm-carrying aircraft that are useful for swiftly incinerating enemy infantry units, particularly on maps with many forests. Meanwhile, the MiG-29 is our choice for air dominance, though it may not match up to Su-27S in terms of combat range or ECM capabilities. However, the MiG-29’s agility allows it to maneuver out of tricky situations more effectively.
Regarding the tanks in question, 79-YA possesses several versions of the T-80 series, with the T-80BV IZD being one of the top variants, surpassed only by the T-80UD. Consequently, it can be inferred that this division’s tank force is more than capable of mounting a ground offensive.
5. 5. Panzerdivision
NATO, Federal Republic Of Germany
The British Challenger Mk.3 could potentially be considered the UK’s top tank option, but it doesn’t hold the title of best among NATO forces. This is because the German 5th Panzer Division fields the Leopard 2A4, which inflicts more damage than the Challenger. However, even the Leopard 2A4 falls slightly short when compared to the T-80UD from the Warsaw Pact nations, particularly in terms of its front and side armor strength.
5. The Panzerdivision boasts superior anti-tank capabilities compared to the UK’s 1st Armoured Division, as its Jaguar 2 units are equipped to fire TOW2 missiles at enemy tanks, offering a penetration score of 25 and an impressive accuracy of 65%.
In terms of firepower within the 5th Panzer Division, nothing surpasses tanks, but artillery comes a close second, particularly when equipped with the MARS rocket launcher. This weapon system can be thought of as roughly equivalent to the Warsaw Pact’s BM-30 Smerch.
Discussing its shortcomings, it seems this Western German air division lacks depth in the sky. Mostly equipped with F-4F aircraft, which are significantly weaker compared to those of the Soviet Union, there is also a small number of Tornado bomber variants that help enhance the division’s emphasis on ground control.
4. 39-YA GV.
Warsaw Pact, Soviet Union
39-YA could be seen as a more advanced model compared to 79-YA in helicopter, airborne, and artillery units, but there’s a drawback when it comes to tanks. The 39-YA provides Su-27S aircraft for air superiority, which is the top offering from the Warsaw Pact. However, this division lacks an offensive Counter-electronic Warfare (CEW) aircraft. Despite possessing an Electronic Warfare Su-24MP, it’s important to note that it doesn’t carry any weapons. This means it can interfere with opposing anti-air units, but it can’t destroy them directly.
For 39-YA, an additional advantage is the wider selection of helicopters, including the Mi-24V [RKT] model. This variant offers more powerful air-to-ground rockets with extended range and enhanced accuracy when compared to the Mi-24P, all at a lower cost, as it primarily excels in its cannon capabilities.
Regarding tanks, it’s worth noting that the 39-YA model primarily showcases T-80B and T-80BV versions. Compared to the T-80BV IZD, these variants have less potent anti-tank missile penetration capabilities. Additionally, they move at a pace that is slightly behind the T-80BV IZD.
3. 119-Y OTD
Warsaw Pact, Soviet Union
119-Y is recognized as one of the most equitably distributed divisions within the Warsaw Pact, both in the air and on land. Uniquely, it grants access to the T-80UD, the formidable tank on the red battlefield, boasting outstanding key features for its main cannon and anti-tank missile system.
In terms of air dominance, the division boasts an equally formidable presence, granting access to both Su-27S and MiG 29 fighter aircraft. Additionally, they offer Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) capabilities and high-explosive options. However, no Napalm-carrying aircraft are part of this squadron.
In simpler terms, the artillery is equipped mainly for long-range shots using howitzers, and the only multiple rocket launcher (MRL) we have is the TOS-1, which can’t reach targets beyond 3.5 kilometers. However, our anti-aircraft and helicopter defense isn’t too shabby, offering a good selection of effective units.
2. 82nd Airborne Division
NATO, United States
In the strategic game WARNO, there is no superior choice than the 82nd Airborne Division when it comes to aerial dominance. This division boasts an impressive fleet of aircraft ideal for air supremacy and ground strikes. The 82nd Airborne Division is equipped with the F15C Eagle as its primary interceptor, complemented by a lineup of F16C fighters capable of SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses), cluster bombing, Napalm attacks, and high-explosive ammunition. For cost-conscious players, there are also F-111F variants available. Additionally, the division boasts some of the best U.S. helicopters for both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.
Due to the frequent use of planes and helicopters, most infantry units within this division can be deployed from the air. This airborne capability enables players to place these units at locations further away from the initial zone, allowing for quicker control over strategic zones.
The M551 TTS Sheridan is the sole tank model available to the 82nd Airborne Division, and though it sports an ordinary main cannon, it boasts respectable anti-tank missiles. In terms of artillery and anti-air capabilities, these fall short as the division primarily concentrates on air superiority.
1. 3rd Armored Division
NATO, United States
Should a land conflict occur on the battlefield, NATO could effectively deploy the 3rd Armored Division. It’s the only division that boasts M1A1 Abrams tanks, which have proven to be formidable adversaries for the T-80UD in numerous comparisons. The strengths of these two tanks are relatively similar in many aspects.
Regarding artillery capabilities, this American division features the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), considered NATO’s top countermeasure against the BM-30 Smerch. However, it should be noted that the MLRS is not as potent as the Smerch in terms of power.
As a gamer, I can vouch that even when soaring high above the battlefield, the 3rd Armor Division’s chatter never ceases. They’ve got my back with their top-tier F15C Eagle aircraft, the undisputed champion in air superiority. Its Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) rating of 40% makes it a tough nut to crack for anti-air units, significantly reducing the chances of successful attacks. However, when it comes to ground targeting, their choices are somewhat lackluster with the F-111 and F-4 aircrafts, both of which pale in comparison.
