As a lifelong Marvel fanatic who grew up dreaming of flying alongside Iron Man and battling Thanos with the Avengers, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the expansion coming to Disneyland’s Avengers Campus! The addition of two brand-new attractions, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab, has me practically vibrating with anticipation.
Visitors to Disneyland Resort should look forward to the arrival of two fresh attractions in the Avengers Campus within the following couple of years. Typically every two years, The Walt Disney Company hosts the D23 Expo – an event renowned for its major announcements about upcoming movies, projects, and park enhancements. Although there were numerous projects announced for Walt Disney World, those visiting Disneyland can anticipate the expansion of the Avengers Campus, which will feature two new attractions: Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, clarified during the event that everything unveiled is currently in active development, as opposed to being part of a hypothetical “Blue Sky” concept. In the past, there has been some skepticism towards The Walt Disney Company for presenting ideas for park updates under the label of “Blue Sky,” which were more potential possibilities rather than definite plans.
At the Horizons: Disney Experiences panel, D’Amaro unveiled plans for expansions and new attractions at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Specifically, Disney California Adventure is set to expand its Avengers Campus area, with construction slated to start next year. The enlarged section will incorporate two new rides: the much-awaited E-ticket experience, Avengers Infinity Defense, and an Iron Man attraction called Stark Flight Lab.
Disneyland Announces Two New Avengers Attractions Expanding the Park
For the very first time, Disneyland visitors will have a chance to engage with an attraction centered around all their beloved Avengers characters – the Avengers Infinity Defense. As per Disney, the narrative revolves around crucial Avengers technology that has vanished, which gives them the ability to traverse different worlds. A character resembling King Thanos is exploiting this tech to cause chaos across the cosmos, and it falls upon the riders to assist the Avengers in reaching destinations such as Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City to prevent him. While specific details about the ride’s mechanics are yet to be disclosed, there are hints that it could mirror the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction at Galaxy’s Edge in terms of its overall experience.
At the Stark Flight Lab, Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Riders will be seated in a shared pod and transported to a testing station. A robotic arm will swirl the pods around for an exhilarating flight simulation. Inside Tony Stark’s workshop, guests can marvel at the newest Stark innovations and Avengers technology. Prior to boarding the pods, they receive instructions from Tony Stark about what to anticipate during the ride. Each experience is unique as no two rides are identical, and it appears the ride system resembles that of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal Studios theme parks, based on the concept art for this attraction.
In a recent update, it’s been revealed that Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Tony Stark in the MCU, will step into a new role – Doctor Doom – in the upcoming Avengers film titled “Avengers: Doomsday.” This character is typically portrayed as a villain in the Fantastic Four series. While some fans are debating this casting choice, there’s no denying that Robert Downey Jr.’s return to Marvel will be an exciting event.
Regardless of a few recent setbacks, Marvel Studios persists as one of the largest film studios in Hollywood, with Deadpool and Wolverine currently delivering some of the highest box office earnings for Marvel films in years. The movie served as the debut of Deadpool, Wolverine, and the X-Men within the MCU, and Disneyland announced that these characters would be meeting fans at the park for the first time. Even though Avengers: Endgame is five years old, it still ranks among the highest-grossing films ever made and Thanos remains a highly identifiable villain in the MCU.
The incorporation of Stark Flight Lab and Avengers Infinity Defense significantly expands the footprint of the Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, effectively doubling its current size. Alongside popular attractions like WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, these new additions will be part of the mix. Furthermore, guests may encounter various Avengers characters in the vicinity of the Avengers Headquarters and the Ancient Sanctum, such as Black Widow, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and more.
Beyond the expansion of Avengers Campus, Disneyland is planning to introduce fresh experiences based on the upcoming film “Avatar: The Way of Water” in Disney California Adventure, as well as an experience inspired by the Pixar movie “Coco.” A new show titled “Walt Disney — A Magical Life” will premiere with the first audio-animatronic figure of Walt Disney, providing insights into some of his most significant achievements and park visions. These developments come alongside a range of updates and expansions destined for Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Over the next few years, these projects are expected to introduce several new zones within the parks and offer novel experiences to Disney park visitors.
