The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians isn’t set to debut until December, but fans of Rick Riordan’s beloved fantasy series have reason to celebrate early this year. It looks like Disney+ is going to be the ongoing home of more than simply Star Wars and Marvel for the foreseeable future.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been a celebrated children’s book series for more than two decades now. Although the original group of novels ended in 2009, two sequel series—The Heroes of Olympus and The Senior Year Adventures— followed, and numerous companion projects have been released over the decades, from graphic novels to lore guides. There was even a limited-run Broadway musical in late 2019. But the overarching Camp Half-Blood Chronicles franchise is best known for the two (admittedly middling) Percy Jackson film adaptations and the well-received Disney+ series that debuted in 2023. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians streaming series did so well, Disney+ is signing on for more even though the second season has barely begun post-production.
Variety is reporting that Disney Branded Television and 20th Television have announced an early Season 3 pickup of Percy Jackson and the Olympians more than eight months before the second season is set to debut on Disney+. This is a remarkable show of confidence not only about the second season’s quality, but about the ongoing viewership of the series as well. For some context, Netflix is yet to pick up a third season of its uberhit series Wednesday despite the Addams Family spinoff being one of the highest-rated streaming shows in the history of the internet. That Disney is willing to go all-in on Percy Jackson speaks volumes.
Disney Is Betting Big On Percy Jackson & Camp Half-Blood
Riordan himself is co-creator of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, giving the television show an air of authenticity that many adaptations simply lack. While many authors do consult on adaptations of their work, having the man who masterminded the entire franchise at the head table has proven to be as useful as one would imagine it to be. Who knows the lore of Camp Half-Blood better than the guy who thought it all up in his head in the first place?
Of course, it also helps that the three lead stars—Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri—are about as talented as child actors get. Throw in a supporting cast that features the likes of Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Margaret Cho, Timothy Omundson, and the late Lance Reddick, and it’s clear Disney is taking this whole thing very seriously. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is not an adaptation for kids… it’s an adaptation for families to enjoy together. If the Mouse House wants to truly be seen as the bastion of entertainment for all ages, it’s clear they need more programming like Percy Jackson and the Olympians in their lineup. With this early Season 3 pickup, they obviously understand the need for it as well.
Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to debut on Disney+ sometime in December 2025.
