Disneyland Unions Vote to Authorize Strike

Disneyland Unions Vote to Authorize Strike

Highlights

  • Disneyland‘s largest union authorizes a strike with over 9,000 cast members amid contract negotiations.
  • Disney faces a potential labor disruption but is currently continuing operations; guests should be prepared for flexibility.
  • Despite some concerns, Disneyland remains open for guests as negotiations for better working conditions are ongoing.

As a long-time Disneyland fan and season pass holder, I’ve been following the ongoing contract negotiations between Disneyland and its unions with great interest and concern. The potential for a strike by over 14,000 cast members across Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Downtown Disney is not only disappointing but also worrying.

During the transition from summer to fall and the approaching Halloween and holiday season at Disneyland Resort, visitors might encounter an unenchanted experience due to potential labor actions. The Disneyland union coalition, in response to ongoing contract talks, has nearly universally endorsed the option of going on strike.

As a dedicated gamer who loves visiting Disneyland Resort, I’m always on the lookout for deals and discounts to make my trips more enjoyable, especially during the hot and slow summer months. However, behind the scenes, things are heating up in a different way. The union representing over 9,000 Disneyland cast members, including ride operators, parking attendants, merchandise retailers, custodians, and many others, is pushing for better working conditions.

According to the Orange County Register’s article, published on July 19, 2024, the Master Services Council, representing over four thousand Disneyland employees from various unions, conducted a strike authorization vote with a staggering 99% approval. No specific strike date has been announced as of now. Disney officials are scheduled to hold talks with union representatives on July 22 and 23 to discuss potential wage hikes, enhanced safety protocols, attendance policies, and additional perks.

Disneyland Faces Strike Authorization After Difficult Year

Last year, Disneyland Paris experienced multiple protests and work stoppages from its employees, leading to the cancellation of various shows, parades, and other events. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA unions also halted productions in film, television, and video games, affecting numerous projects under Disney’s umbrella. With over 14,000 employees at Disneyland California across the two parks and downtown area, a potential strike could significantly disrupt operations within the company and affect Disneyland visitors. However, Disneyland spokesperson Jessica Good downplayed the significance of the union vote in a statement, describing it as “routine during negotiation processes.” Despite this, the near-unanimous approval for a strike indicates that Disneyland employees are strongly committed to addressing their concerns.

Last year, I faced some tough news as a gamer and Disney fan when The Walt Disney Company announced massive layoffs across various sectors, dealing with the unionization of several departments all at once. Adding to the criticism, the recent overhaul of the Genie+ Lightning Lane system in the parks has drawn heavy fire from visitors, including myself. Although no strike date has been set yet, it’s important for me and fellow parkgoers to be prepared for potential disruptions during our Disney trips in the coming weeks as labor halts can now be called at any moment due to union authorization. Let’s stay flexible and enjoy the magic of Disney while we can!
