The popular Final Fantasy spin-off, Dissidia, is back with a new mobile game called Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy. It will be free to play on Android and iOS devices starting March 24, 2026. TopMob recently got an early look at the game, giving them a chance to play and experience the Final Fantasy crossover firsthand.
Dissidia is a unique part of the Final Fantasy universe where iconic characters from different games clash in battle. These games are typically fighting games, reimagining each hero and villain’s abilities within that style – for example, Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 is a quick, close-combat fighter, while Terra from Final Fantasy 6 is a powerful spellcaster who attacks from a distance.
Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy plays more like an action game, similar to Final Fantasy Ever Crisis, and differs from the original Dissidia Final Fantasy. A major change is the game’s setting, which is unlike anything typically seen in the Final Fantasy series.
Dissidia Duellum Brings Final Fantasy Characters Into the Real World
Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy begins by asking players which Final Fantasy game is their favorite, presenting a huge list of options. However, this choice only affects a small part of your in-game profile.
Okay, so I finally got my profile set up, and the game immediately throws me into a cool intro movie. Honestly, it wasn’t a surprise, but Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 is the first character you see, chasing Sephiroth through some kind of portal. But get this – instead of landing in a game like Kingdom Hearts or Smash Bros., they actually end up in the real world, specifically modern-day Japan! It’s a pretty wild setup.
After you create your profile, an opening movie begins. As expected, the scene starts with Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7, chasing Sephiroth through a portal.
The game starts with Cloud fighting the Iron Giant, a tough enemy that appears in several Final Fantasy games. This battle serves as a long tutorial to teach you how the combat system works (more details on that later). After Cloud wins, he teams up with the Warrior of Light (not the Jack from Stranger of Paradise), Terra, and Lightning, and they all join forces.
In the story, characters from Final Fantasy meet a child who calls them “Ghosts.” Much of the narrative unfolds through messages, as the Final Fantasy heroes all connect in a shared messaging app and communicate using GIFs.
Who’s Who In Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy

The initial release of Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy features ten playable characters, and the developers have announced that more will be added later. Here’s the current list of characters:
| Name | Game | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior of Light | Final Fantasy | Support |
| Kain Highwind | Final Fantasy 4 | Melee |
| Krile | Final Fantasy 5 | Support |
| Terra Branford | Final Fantasy 6 | Ranged |
| Cloud Strife | Final Fantasy 7 | Melee |
| Rinoa Heartilly | Final Fantasy 8 | Ranged |
| Zidane Tribal | Final Fantasy 9 | Agile |
| Lightning | Final Fantasy 13 | Agile |
| Gaia | Final Fantasy 14 | Melee |
| Prompto | Final Fantasy 15 | Ranged |
Characters wear outfits inspired by their original games, plus new, modern looks available in multiple colors. These modern outfits are surprisingly stylish, prioritizing fashion over overly revealing designs – a refreshing change compared to other appearances in Ever Crisis.
You get new characters by using Character Tickets, and each character’s different outfits are considered unique items. These characters fill one of four different combat roles. They don’t have special equipment, but each one has unique attacks they can use during battles.
Dissidia Duellum Pits Players Against Each Other (and a Boss)

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy battles pit two teams of three players against each other on compact maps. The maps contain several crystals protected by monsters. Players earn Bravery points by capturing these crystals after defeating the monsters guarding them.
A powerful enemy, like the Behemoth, will appear during the match. To win, your team must defeat it before time runs out. But there’s a catch: the enemy is invincible until you fill your team’s Bravery meter. You fill this meter by collecting crystals, and the opposing team is trying to grab those same crystals! Once the Bravery meter is full, you can unleash a powerful attack – a Bravery Burst – which finally allows you to damage the enemy. Keep in mind the enemy has a separate health bar for each team.
Okay, so you absolutely can and should attack the other team – you can take them down! But don’t worry, they don’t stay gone for good. They’ll respawn way out at the edge of the map, and that gives you a chance to push your advantage while they’re running all the way back into the fight. It buys you some valuable time!
When a character’s Bravery meter is full, they can unleash a powerful Bravery Burst attack that deals damage to the boss. Each team shares a unique health bar for the boss, and the burst attack targets that shared health.
Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy’s touchscreen controls can be a little tricky. The game is played on a vertical screen, and you move both the camera and your character by tapping different areas. While the game offers helpful auto-targeting features, it does take some time to master the controls.
As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I was really impressed with how good this game looks, especially for a mobile title! They ditched the super-realistic style of games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and went with a cool, cel-shaded look for the characters, which I think works really well. The levels are based on actual places in Japan, and they capture the feel of those locations pretty nicely. And the music? It’s packed with classic Final Fantasy tunes and some awesome new remixes – honestly, the soundtrack alone is worth checking out!
How the Gacha Mechanics Work in Dissidia Duellum

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy’s battles center around a unique Ability system. Players choose five Abilities to use in combat, and these can be either common to all characters of a certain type, or unique to a specific character. For instance, Terra from Final Fantasy 6 can use the standard ranged attack spell Fira, which all ranged characters have access to, but she also has a special, exclusive Ability called Meltdown.
Abilities can’t be used repeatedly in battle because they have cooldowns. They’re strong against other players, but even more effective when used as part of a Bravery Burst against bosses, so timing is crucial.
Just so you know, not every Ability in the game is about dealing damage. Some are all about getting around the map – like Minwu’s Teleport, which instantly moves you to the closest crystal. And others are support-focused, letting you heal your teammates or give them a boost!
Let’s talk about how you unlock new abilities. You don’t get everything right away – instead, you use a special in-game currency to ‘draw’ them. This means the strongest abilities are obtained through luck, or by spending money for a chance to get them. You can also improve your abilities using Growth Eggs, which are another thing you’ll need to collect and manage.
Abilities are strong when fighting other players, but they’re even more effective against bosses when used as part of a Bravery Burst. Because of this extra power, players need to time their ability usage carefully.
As a player, I’m really excited about how the new Ability system completely changes up each character. It means you’re unlikely to run into someone with the exact same build as you, which is awesome! I’m guessing we’ll probably see a tier list emerge as more characters are added, but honestly, all these unique Abilities create so many cool and interesting ways to build your character – it’s really promising!
The Specter of Dissidia NT Hangs Over Duellum

I recently tried the Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy preview, and I’m left wondering if it will share the same issues as the previous game, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.
Newsletter: Dissidia Duellum coverage and hands-on analysis
I loved the original Dissidia games because if I lost a fight, I knew it was totally my fault! But Dissidia NT switched things up and made it a 3v3 team battle. Honestly, it just didn’t work. To have a good match, you needed six players who were all pretty evenly matched, and that was hard to find. It really took the fun out of it for me.
In Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, having a new or quitting player almost guaranteed a loss for their team because they were at a significant disadvantage. Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy seems to be repeating this problem, which is particularly concerning for a mobile game where players might disconnect more often.
Another big problem with the preview was that we never managed to defeat the bosses. Every game ended with our team losing, because players spent more time fighting each other and using abilities to stay alive than working together. Beating a boss requires a lot of teamwork, and the time limit became our biggest challenge, as matches consistently ended before we could finish.
A major weakness of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT seems to be repeating in Dissidia Duellum, which is particularly concerning given that Duellum is designed for mobile devices.
With so many enemies – the boss, other players, and regular monsters or crystals – packed into a small space, it can be hard to keep track of everything and aim your abilities at the right target.
Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy lets you play with AI teammates against AI opponents, but the main part of the game focuses on competing against other players. I worry that players hoping for a single-player experience will get discouraged when they lose to opponents who are coordinating with each other – which is a common problem in many online games.
Our initial experience with Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy was limited, as we only played with a small group for a short time. If the game develops a competitive community, these early impressions may change. When six players with well-developed characters compete, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy offers a thrilling multiplayer experience – it simply needs the right conditions and dedicated players to reach its full potential.
