Divinity: Original Sin 2 – How To Escape Fort Joy

Ahoy matey! I’ve been sailing these digital seas for quite some time now, and I must say, I’ve never come across a more detailed treasure map than this guide to escaping Fort Joy in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Among the initial hurdles you’ll encounter in your journey through Divinity: Original Sin 2 is figuring out how to break free from Fort Joy. This prison-like fortress offers various escape routes, and familiarizing yourself with all of them will make navigating the dungeon more efficient, save time, and eventually help you achieve freedom.

Inside Fort Joy, there are numerous Non-Player Characters (NPCs) who are imprisoned, and conversing with them frequently offers alternative paths for leaving the fort. These methods might include learning lock-picking skills, discovering hidden passages, or even sneaking by enemies undetected. If you’ve found yourself stuck in Fort Joy and struggling to move forward, this guide should offer some useful insights.

All Ways Of Escaping Fort Joy In Divinity: Original Sin 2

You have the opportunity to take on a combined total of five smaller missions, each offering a potential escape route from Fort Joy upon interacting with different characters within the fort. Here is a list of quests that become available as you attempt to navigate your exit from Fort Joy:

  • Follow Your Own Path: This is your default objective that’s already added to your journal. The quest encourages you to escape Fort Joy on your own.
  • Leaving Hand In Hand: You’ll acquire this quest by speaking to a mage named Gawin who promises to help you escape Fort Joy on the condition that you find the Gloves of Teleportation.
  • The Path Of The Soul: This quest requires helping Lord Withermoore, a cursed Source Hunter. Withermoore promises you a way out of Fort Joy if you help lift his curse.
  • The Path Of Common Knowledge: You’ll pick up this quest by either speaking to either Griff or Saheila and helping release Amyro from a prison. Helping Amyro will let you discover an additional way to reach the dungeons below Fort Joy — and consequently escape the fort.
  • The Path Of Greatest Resistance: This is a complex quest that involves speaking to several NPCs who could potentially help you find your way into the underground prison blocks and eventually out of the fort.

Follow Your Own Path Quest

Should you opt to depart Fort Joy independently, be ready for an extended journey filled with exploration and possibly demanding encounters. Your primary goal will be locating the hidden underground holding cells and using your lockpicking skills to navigate multiple doors. Ultimately, your mission is to lower a bridge to successfully leave the fort behind.

In this method, you’ll face formidable foes and navigate the stronghold step by step. For optimal success, ensure you’re equipped with powerful weapons and have assembled a team of varied characters to back you up during tough situations.

Leaving Hand In Hand Quest

To embark on the quest titled “Leaving Hand in Hand,” you can locate a character named Gawin in the western part of Fort Joy, close to the camps. Upon conversing with Gawin, he reveals that if you manage to slay the Saltwater Crocodiles lurking by the beach and then retrieve the Teleportation Gloves, he may assist you in escaping Fort Joy.

After getting hold of the Teleportation Gloves, make your way back to Gawin who will guide you to a hidden nook before ultimately turning on you. However, now that you have the Teleportation Gloves, they can be utilized to transport your group over the chasm and onto the bridge, allowing you exit from Fort Joy.

The Path Of The Soul Quest

As a fan eagerly exploring Fort Joy Square, I discovered that a captivating game of hide-and-seek with Mody, a charming child hidden within a cavern south of the square, was the key to unlocking my next adventure. Once our playful encounter concluded, she graciously directed me towards a concealed hatch, promising access to an enticing underground realm.

Take the hatch to find yet another child, who seems to be speaking to an undead guard pinned to a wall with a spear through his chest. Speaking to this undead guard, he introduces himself as Lord Withermoore, who’s been cursed by Braccus Rex for the past 700 years. Withermoore requests you to find a soul jar and destroy it and promises to help you escape the fort in return. What you’re really looking to gain when pursuing this quest is access to the dungeon below Fort Joy.

Withermoore doesn’t provide any additional help in your effort to escape the fort itself.

The Path Of Common Knowledge Quest

Should you choose the Path of Common Knowledge, assisting Saheila in freeing Amyro from prison will be necessary. Amyro has been wrongfully detained by camp master Griff under charges of theft. By conversing with Amyro, you’ll have the opportunity to learn his perspective and understand that his imprisonment is unwarranted as he is innocent.

You can now choose to either find the actual thief or fight Griff to rescue Amyro. Whatever approach you take to rescue Amyro, he’ll help you by marking your map with a location to yet another hatch that leads to the underground dungeon. Again, you’ll need to traverse the dungeon on your own, pick locks, and find a viable escape route.

The Path Of Greatest Resistance Quest

Among the five paths you can take to leave Fort Joy, the one with the most twists and turns might be the hardest to navigate – this is known as “The Path of Greatest Resistance.” You’ll find yourself on this path if you happen to witness Atusa’s execution when you first arrive on the beach. This quest is given to you automatically.

To advance your journey, it’s crucial that you locate the rogue magister, Delorus. You can find him hidden within the depths of Fort Joy’s underground dungeon. Keep in mind, reaching him involves overcoming some formidable magisters along the way.

After saving Delorus from the magisters, he will give you a secret code that enables you to deceive two other magisters, who are currently questioning a young boy named Han. Assisting Han allows you to trail him to a vessel, leading ultimately to an escape from Fort Joy.

The Quickest Way To Escape Fort Joy

Should you wish to depart from Fort Joy promptly without paying heed to connected quests or prizes, here’s a suggested approach:

  • As soon as you land at Fort Joy beach, make your way to Fort Joy Square, which is in the middle of the map. Then, interact with the statue of Lucian to locate a secret button that grants you access to the underground hatch. Ensure that your character has at least 11 Wits to locate the button.
  • Next, interact with the hatch to enter the holding cells, and head north until you find a few magisters interrogating a deviant magister, Delorus. You should also locate a stool with a prison key nearby. Quick save and sneak your way up to the stool and collect the key.
  • Now, head back the way you came, but instead of going all the way to the end, stop midway and head west to unlock a door with the prison key.
  • You’re just a few steps away from exiting the fort at this point. The next room consists of a few more magisters and High Judge Orivand. You can completely avoid this fight if you manage to sneak past these higher-level enemies.
    • If you decide to sneak past these enemies, split your party up, and one-by-one sneak along the western balcony that leads you to the outer wall and a ladder. As soon as you reach the ladder, the quest log will update, indicating that you successfully made it out of the fort.

This procedure roughly lasts for five minutes, however it means giving up extra missions, possible allies, equipment, and experience points. Therefore, consider using this approach when you see fit.
