Larian Studios has made a free upgrade available for Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, allowing players with Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S to experience the game with improved, native support. Widely considered one of the best RPGs ever made, Divinity: Original Sin 2 offers players tons of freedom, exciting turn-based combat, a compelling story, detailed world, and classic RPG elements like leveling up and exploring.
Gamers are excited about the latest installment in the popular RPG series, Divinity, which was unveiled at The Game Awards 2025 with a captivating trailer. Larian Studios, the developer, calls this new project their most ambitious RPG yet, and it will be the seventh game in the series that began in 2002. CEO Swen Vincke described it as their biggest RPG to date.
Larian Releases a Free Digital Upgrade for Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Multiple Platforms
With the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3, many players are revisiting or discovering the Divinity: Original Sin games. Now, Larian Studios has released a free upgrade for Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. While details are limited, players can expect a smoother experience with a frame rate of 60 FPS. The game already offered 4K resolution on older PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Plus, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is currently discounted on all current-generation platforms, with the PlayStation 5 version available for just $14.99.
So, about that free upgrade… it’s awesome, but there are a few things you need to know. First, you have to already own the game on Switch, Xbox One, or PS4 to get it. And just to be clear, this isn’t a whole new version of the game, it’s more like a really nice update. The biggest bummer? If you switched to the digital version of the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S and don’t have the original disc, you won’t be able to upgrade for free. They need that disc to prove you owned it before!
I remember when Divinity: Original Sin 2 came out – it was a sequel that fans really wanted, and they showed it with a successful Kickstarter. It dropped in 2017 and quickly became one of the best RPGs around, at least in my opinion! Everyone loved the story and how huge the world was, but what really stood out was how much freedom it gave you. You could play it so many different ways, and your choices actually mattered. It’s got incredible scores – a 93 from critics and a 90 from players on OpenCritic. And on Steam? Over 170,000 reviews, and it’s still ‘Overwhelmingly Positive.’ Seriously, it’s a fantastic game.
As a huge fan, I love that Divinity: Original Sin 2 lets you pick from five different races and six pre-made characters, or even build your own hero from scratch! You can explore the world of Rivellon on your own, or team up with up to three friends to try and stop the Void and become a god. Even if you haven’t played the earlier Divinity games, don’t worry – the story is still totally accessible and you can jump right in and have an amazing time!
Ever since Divinity: Original Sin 2 was released eight years ago, fans have been asking for a sequel. The recent announcement that it’s in development has made them even more excited. If you’re looking forward to Larian’s next Divinity game, playing through the original 2017 RPG – which can take between 60 and 200 hours – is a great way to prepare for its eventual launch.
