Does Sony Need New IP, Or Can It Just Revive a Forgotten Franchise?

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when I read about Sony‘s potential revival of some classic PlayStation franchises. I remember the thrill of Killzone’s intense multiplayer battles, the strategic depth of SOCOM, and the adrenaline rush of Resistance’s apocalyptic warfare.

Simultaneously, Concord underwent a dramatic self-collapse, while Sony’s Chief Financial Officer admitted that the company was short on intellectual property (IP). He explained that, in terms of games, movies, and anime, Sony doesn’t have as much original IP as they initially developed. This admission is significant given the recent concerns about PlayStation’s future prospects

Here’s a simple and engaging way to rephrase your statement: Players around the globe are eagerly waiting for the arrival of the new PlayStation model, however, they share a common worry. The primary issue is that there aren’t many new games available to justify the cost of purchasing an upgraded console

Instead of creating entirely new intellectual properties (IP) and potentially facing a situation similar to Concord, would it be more advantageous for Sony to revisit some of its less-explored but well-established franchises that already have a devoted fan base?

We’re All Waiting

Could it be possible that the resurrection of one or more of the PlayStation franchises that haven’t seen daylight in over a decade could contribute significantly to renewing the greatness of PlayStation once more?

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been yearning for more Killzone action from the talented minds at Guerrilla Games. Since they left the series back in 2013 to focus on Horizon, it’s only natural that I dream of them returning to this beloved franchise. With the surge of tactical shooters these days, maybe a new SOCOM game could be in the cards? Or, given the current fascination with apocalyptic settings, why not revisit the world of Resistance and see where that story leads us next?

Given the success of Souls-like games, it might be beneficial for Sony to invest in FromSoftware again, potentially leading to a new Bloodborne game or even a remastered version

Superheroes and ‘enhanced individuals’ are universally appreciated, but since pivoting to develop Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch left Infamous in the dirt in 2014.

There’s no denying the excitement surrounding Uncharted among PlayStation enthusiasts, given that Naughty Dog is currently focused on other projects. Additionally, there are several other popular franchises in their repertoire such as Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Syphon Filter, The Order, making for a rather extensive collection

Concord, a project that proved costly to the tune of $100 million, serves as a compelling illustration of the potential pitfalls when launching something entirely novel with minimal marketing and a high price tag in an era where free-to-play games are thriving. It’s important to remember that not every innovative intellectual property (IP) will achieve the same level of success as Black Myth: Wukong

Fundamentally, discussing this matter is quite intricate because modern gaming productions now require extended periods to create – typically several years. If Guerrilla Games were to halt work on Horizon and immediately commence development of a new Killzone title tomorrow, it’s likely we wouldn’t see the release until around 2030

We can dream, though.
