Dome or Helix Fossil in Mt. Moon? Best Choice in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, Explained

Once you’ve defeated Brock, the first Gym Leader in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, your journey continues east through Route 3 and then Route 4. After arriving at the Pokemon Center on Route 4, you’ll need to venture through Mt. Moon to reach the next Gym Leader, Misty, in Cerulean City.

As you explore Mt. Moon for the first time, you’ll encounter a trainer named Super Nerd Miguel. He has discovered two unusual fossils – the Dome Fossil and the Helix Fossil – and will share information about them with you. However, you can only choose one. Which fossil should you select?

Should You Choose the Helix or Dome Fossil in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

Kabuto or Omanyte?

When choosing between the Helix and Dome Fossils, keep in mind you won’t be able to actually revive the Pokémon until quite late in the game – around the time you challenge your seventh gym leader. Also, once you pick one fossil, you can’t get the other Pokémon in the game unless you trade with a friend, so make your choice carefully!

Choosing the Helix Fossil will bring Omanyte, a Water and Rock-type Pokémon, back to life (see image below). If you select the Dome Fossil instead, you’ll get Kabuto, another Water and Rock-type Pokémon. Both Omanyte and Kabuto will evolve into Omastar and Kabutops respectively when they reach level 40.

Where to Take the Helix/Dome Fossil in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

Image via FCPlaythroughs (FireRed Longplay)

You can’t bring the Helix and Dome Fossils back to life until you get to Cinnabar Island, where you’ll challenge Blaine, the seventh Gym Leader. You’ll need to learn Surf and beat Koga or Sabrina before you can reach Cinnabar, so hold onto those fossils until then!

When you arrive at Cinnabar Island, be sure to check out the Pokemon Lab—it’s right next to the Pokemon Center.

Go inside and through the final door on your right, then talk to the professor near the Resurrection Machine in the back. Hand him the fossil, step out of the room briefly, and when you return, your fossil Pokémon will be ready.

Just so you know, the Omanyte and Kabuto you receive will only be level 5. If you were hoping for a powerful Pokémon to help with the Elite Four, you might want to reconsider. You can train them up by battling or using Rare Candies, but it will take some time.

Is Kabutops or Omastar Better for Your Team in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

If you’re thinking of including Omastar or Kabutops in your main team in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you win battles.

  • Both Pokemon are Rock and Water-types, so they will take four times as much damage from Grass-type moves. If you’re sending them out in a battle against a Grass Pokemon, it might be best to pull them back unless you want to see them faint quickly.
  • Omastar is a bit tankier than Kabutops (higher defense and a high special attack, but slower to attack).
  • Kabutops is faster and has a higher regular attack power than Omastar, so you can hit harder and, in a perfect world, get your attacks in before your opponent strikes.
  • At the end of the day, it really depends on which Pokemon you like more, design-wise, and whether you already have a tank or a fast attacker on your team. Have fun with it!
