Sony’s recent State of Play presentation was full of exciting news for gamers, but the biggest surprise was likely God of War: Sons of Sparta. Fans of the God of War series were thrilled to learn about a new 2D prequel that tells the story of a younger Kratos – and even more surprised that it was released on PS5 immediately after the announcement! God of War: Sons of Sparta was a clear standout moment of the event, and it wasn’t the only God of War news shared either.
As a huge God of War fan, I’m so excited to hear that a remake of the original trilogy is actually happening! We’ve been hearing rumors for ages, and it’s awesome to finally get confirmation. I’m really curious to see how the developers will approach rebuilding Kratos’ first adventures. But here’s the thing that’s a little weird: Sony says it’s very early in development. That’s surprising after all this time! While I’m totally thrilled about God of War: Sons of Sparta suddenly appearing, it does make you wonder why they’re just now starting work on the trilogy remake.
The God of War Trilogy Remake Has Been Expected For Years – So Why Wait Until Now?
Starting around 2024, people have been speculating about a remake of the original God of War trilogy. It’s important to remember that these are just rumors, and Sony’s recent announcement proves how often leaks get things wrong. Because Sony stressed the remake is in the very early stages, it seems fans will be waiting quite a while for the next God of War games.

Sony has stated that it will be some time before they reveal any further details, leaving fans of God of War uncertain about what’s next. The future of the God of War series has been a major question for the gaming community. While a remake of the original trilogy and a remaster of God of War: Sons of Sparta are welcome news, the trilogy remake is somewhat frustrating because it suggests the sequel to Ragnarok might be further off than anticipated.
Despite rumors suggesting the remake was well underway, it seems those leaks likely surfaced when Santa Monica Studio was still brainstorming ideas. We can’t know for sure, but it’s surprising the remake is only now entering production after all the talk. While it’s exciting news, it’s disappointing it took so long to get started. Ideally, the remake would have launched earlier, allowing Santa Monica Studio to fully focus on the next Ragnarok game, and this announcement would have been perfect for last year’s 20th anniversary. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
Good news: TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos, was the one who revealed the remake. It’s still unknown whether he’ll be recording brand new lines for the game or just rerecording the old ones.
The Next Mainline God of War Game is Becoming More Mysterious As Time Passes
It will be four years since the release of God of War Ragnarok in November 2026 – the same amount of time that passed between the first Norse God of War game and Ragnarok. Because game development is getting more complex, many expected the next installment to take longer, especially since it will probably require a completely new world and updated technology. While anything is possible, the long wait for the trilogy remake is making me concerned that the next God of War game will take even longer to arrive than anticipated. I’m hoping that isn’t true, but the remake news has me bracing for a potentially very long wait.
Rumors About the Next God of War Game
- There are theories that it could take place in Egypt.
- Atreus could take up Kratos’ mantle.
- A split focus could see Kratos rebuilding Greece while Atreus explores a new setting.
Santa Monica Studio has been very secretive about the future of Kratos and Atreus. A new God of War game taking place in Egypt would be a fresh and exciting direction. While Ragnarok seemed to conclude the Norse storyline, the writers might have some unexpected twists planned to keep the story going. With Kratos and Atreus now heading down separate paths, the next God of War game could even tell its story across multiple worlds.
In the Meantime, At Least There’s a Cool New God of War Prequel to Dive Into and a Show on the Horizon
While God of War: Sons of Sparta isn’t the brand-new installment some fans hoped for, it offers a compelling glimpse into Kratos’ past. Sony hasn’t announced when we’ll see news about a potential God of War trilogy remake or a new main game, but this provides a fresh experience to enjoy in the meantime.
Amazon’s upcoming live-action series based on God of War is both exciting and a little worrying. Adapting video games into live-action shows is always challenging. Some argue it’s not even needed for games with strong storylines like God of War and The Last of Us. While Fallout demonstrated that a live-action adaptation can be successful, that series benefited from the game’s focus on world-building and lore rather than a rigid plot, making it easier to create a new, engaging story.
The live-action adaptation of God of War will feature Ryan Hurst, Callum Vinson, Alastair Duncan, Mandy Patinkin, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka, Max Parker, and Teresa Palmer in its cast.
As a huge fan of Santa Monica Studio, I’m really excited to hear they’re working on a brand new game after the amazing God of War series! It sounds like they’ve got a lot on their plate right now, which is awesome, but I also hope they aren’t overextending themselves. They’ve consistently delivered incredible games, so I trust they know how to manage everything. Until then, I’ll be replaying God of War: Sons of Sparta and eagerly waiting to see what Sony and Santa Monica Studio reveal next – I can’t wait!
