Don’t Miss Out: Nintendo’s Gold Points Program Ends Soon!

Summary

  • Nintendo fans can no longer earn Gold Points after March 25.
  • Gold Points from before March 25 can still be used until expiration.
  • The Gold Points program is ending right before the launch of the Switch 2.

Nintendo has reminded its followers that as of March 25, they will no longer be able to accumulate My Nintendo Gold Points. These points function as a unique currency for Nintendo enthusiasts, which can be used on the Switch’s eShop in exchange for games. Notably, both digital and physical game purchases earn these points, with digital games offering more points compared to their physical counterparts.

It turns out that the Gold Points program, offered by Nintendo, has resonated strongly with its fanbase. Many members of My Nintendo who buy a sufficient number of games for their Switch console can effectively earn a free game using their accumulated Gold Points, and numerous individuals have leveraged this program extensively throughout the years. Regrettably, Nintendo declared last month that it would be phasing out the Gold Points program.

Starting March 25 at 12:30am ET, Nintendo fans can no longer accumulate Gold Points through their purchases. Nintendo made this announcement via Twitter, with their Japanese customer service account providing the details. The Gold Points program will officially end on that date. However, any existing Gold Points can still be utilized until they expire. Essentially, from March 25 onwards, fans won’t be able to earn new Gold Points but can continue using the ones they have already accumulated. So, if you have eligible Switch purchases with unclaimed Gold Points, now is the time to redeem them before March 25.

Nintendo Gold Points Can’t Be Earned Starting March 25

It appears that some might be puzzled as to why Nintendo is discontinuing one of its well-liked eShop features – the Gold Points program. However, Nintendo has yet to offer any clarification on this matter. Interestingly enough, the Gold Points program will cease to exist just a week before Nintendo’s Switch 2 Nintendo Direct event. This presentation, scheduled for mid-February, is anticipated to unveil details about Nintendo’s upcoming next-gen hybrid console, which is expected to launch by June. Remarkably, this new console will debut without the Gold Points program accompanying it.

With the arrival of a fresh console, there might be no need for Nintendo to keep the Gold Points program, as it wouldn’t automatically be included in the Switch 2. However, it’s regrettable for devoted Nintendo enthusiasts that they will no longer receive Gold Points. For now, these fans must accept that their purchases won’t earn them any Gold Points. A potential revamp of the system could happen later on, but until then, this is the reality we face.
