Don’t Nod Puts Projects On Hold As Jusant and Banishers Fail to Sell

Don’t Nod Puts Projects On Hold As Jusant and Banishers Fail to Sell

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about the struggles of studios like Don’t Nod. The gaming industry is a rollercoaster ride, and sometimes, even the critically acclaimed titles fall short of expectations.

As a passionate admirer, I felt compelled to share some recent financial updates from Don’t Nod Studios for the first half of 2024. Unfortunately, their latest releases, Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, didn’t quite hit the bullseye as they underperformed significantly compared to initial expectations. Consequently, in a transparent move, Don’t Nod has decided to temporarily halt progress on two ongoing projects within the studio.

Going Down

The latest financial report from Don’t Nod showed a drop of 11% in their annual operating income compared to last year. Lately, the company has launched two games, but unfortunately, neither managed to meet the expected sales targets, leaving the management feeling disheartened.

In a statement, Oskar Guilbert, the CEO, said:

It’s clearly disheartening that our latest release, Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, didn’t perform as well commercially as we anticipated in a tough and exclusive market. Despite receiving positive reviews, the sales didn’t meet our expectations, which negatively impacted our second-quarter earnings for 2024. This has led us to explore various strategies for our future plans.

The studio has decided to momentarily halt ‘two active projects’, as mentioned in the financial statement, and it’s been pointed out that this decision will result in a significant expense.

It emerged that the majority of the studio’s revenue stemmed from older releases like Vampyr and Life is Strange. The Life is Strange series could have seen increased sales due to the recent unveiling of Life is Strange: Double Exposure and the upcoming launch of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, a game with a storyline similar to an emotional choice-and-consequence system.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but bring up an interesting tidbit: Life is Strange: Double Exposure isn’t directly crafted by Dontnod Entertainment, the creators of the original series. However, the initial installments of the Life is Strange franchise were their brilliant work.

At the conclusion of the financial briefing, attention was drawn to the fact that the projects labeled ‘P10’ and ‘P14’ will be launched by the close of 2027.
