Doom: The Dark Ages Fans Unhappy Over ‘Lame’ Difficulty Rename

Summary

  • Some Doom fans are upset over name change from “I’m Too Young to Die” to “Aspiring Slayer.”
  • Doom: The Dark Ages gives players the freedom to customize the difficulty as they see fit.
  • The game launches May 13 in early access and May 15 to everyone else.

Enthusiasts of “Doom: The Dark Ages” are somewhat less enthusiastic about the upcoming FPS game following a shift in how the game approaches difficulty settings. It’s not necessarily the challenge levels themselves in “Doom: The Dark Ages” that has players voicing concerns, but rather the names assigned to them.

On May 13, fans can get an early peek at “Doom: The Dark Ages”. Since the launch of “Doom Eternal” in 2020, this will mark the first new “Doom” game for players. In this installment, developers at id Software are offering a prequel to the 2016 “Doom”, where players assume the role of the Doom Slayer, battling the minions of hell in a medieval-themed setting, as he stands as the last defense for a kingdom under siege.

Players on Reddit have noticed a shift in the upcoming game that appears to replace the iconic very easy mode “I’m Too Young to Die” with a new option called “Aspiring Slayer,” which some players find less engaging due to its name change, as it seemingly removes a long-standing franchise tradition. Additionally, the game “Doom: The Dark Ages” will introduce adjustable difficulty sliders that will enable players to modify various gameplay aspects such as projectile speed and damage, enemy aggression, and daze effect duration. The game director, Hugo Martin, has acknowledged criticisms regarding the sliders making the game too easy, but the unveiling of this new general difficulty option is causing further discontent among some fans.

Not All Fans Love Doom: The Dark Ages’ Difficulty Changes

In 1993, when the first Doom game was introduced, it only had four levels of difficulty: I’m Too Young to Die, Hey, Not Too Rough, Hurt Me Plenty, and Ultra Violence. These modes remained consistent across the first three games in the series. However, a more challenging mode called Nightmare Difficulty was added later, warning players that they were about to face an unfair challenge. Now, fans are intrigued by two additional difficulty levels on the hardest setting, labeled Pandemonium and Ultra-Nightmare. Although some fans seem displeased with the name change of the easiest mode, there’s much excitement surrounding these tougher settings.

Despite some long-standing fans voicing concerns about the naming structure, there’s still plenty of excitement building for the upcoming FPS game. It appears that neither Bethesda nor id are planning to slow down the momentum of this popular series, as Martin and Marty Stratton are already considering the potential for more prequels within the Doom franchise.
