The following contains spoilers regarding weapon unlocks in Doom: The Dark Ages.
It’s clear that Doom: The Dark Ages and the evolution of the Doom series since its modern revival have shown us that Doom (2016) served as a clean slate for id Software to apply bold, creative strokes. Looking back on id’s reboot of Doom, it appears quite basic in comparison, but as a foundation upon which id could expand their vision for the franchise, there seems to be no bounds to the imaginative goals they can pursue for its future.
In essence, whereas Doom Eternal emphasizes fast-paced acrobatics and movement, Doom: The Dark Ages appears to take the opposite approach by largely having players face off against Hell’s demonic hordes, using blocking and parrying techniques to deflect incoming attacks. Given its dark medieval fantasy backdrop, a shield and flail seem fitting for this prequel. However, an apparent minor adjustment in gunplay significantly changes the player experience when interacting with the game’s original run-and-gun mechanics: a weapon class pairing system.
Doom Eternal Marries Blisteringly Quick Gameplay with a Rainbow of UI

In the games Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, players are limited to using only two weapons at a time, alternating between them as needed. If they want to switch to another weapon before the currently equipped one runs out of ammo during gameplay, they must open the weapon selection menu, which can slow down the fast-paced action and clutter the user interface, even though it does provide a brief moment of pause with a slow-motion effect.
In “Doom: The Dark Ages”, there’s a significant focus on the Doom Slayer’s latest additions to his arsenal – the Shield Saw and melee weapons. These tools are no longer just supplementary to gunplay as they were in “Doom Eternal”; instead, they have become equally essential. The Blood Punch, Chainsaw, and Flame Belch, which were featured in “Doom Eternal”, are now obsolete.
To keep ammo, health, and armor consistently replenished, players in Doom Eternal must manage these mechanics, each with their own cooldowns and resources to find during tense battles against Marauders. Additionally, they are expected to navigate the arena like an obstacle course by constantly jumping around. In other words, quickly switching between weapons adds another layer to this complex gameplay experience. Not only does Doom Eternal revolutionize what a Doom game should feel like, but The Dark Ages also provides an intelligent solution for the weapon wheel.
Doom: The Dark Ages’ Weapon Class System is a Godsend

In “The Dark Ages”, players don’t need to frequently switch weapons because the Shield Saw, Power Gauntlet, Flail, or Dreadmace work effectively together. However, in “Doom Eternal”, there’s less incentive to stick with a single weapon for long as demons have specific weak spots that can be advantageously attacked with various guns.
In “Doom: The Dark Ages,” the weapon wheel is still present, but switching guns has been streamlined by categorizing firearms into distinct classes. This game, set in a medieval context with castles, dragons, and other such elements, now offers unique weapons for the Doom Slayer, one example being the Pulverizer, which is particularly effective at crushing skulls. A notable addition to the gameplay mechanics is the class system, where pairs of sibling weapons have been implemented for easier use. The weapon classes in “Doom: The Dark Ages” are as follows:
- Shotgun: Combat Shotgun and Super Shotgun
- Rail Spike: Rail Spike Shredder and Rail Spike Impaler
- Plasma Rifle: Accelerator and Cycler
- Launcher: Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher
- Skullcrusher: Pulverizer and Ravager
As a gamer immersed in the world of Doom: The Dark Ages, I’ve noticed an interesting feature – each weapon has a class-related duo, except for the Reaver Chainshot and the Ballistic Force Crossbow (BFC). What makes this game stand out is that the weapon wheel combines both pairs within a single slot. This means I can easily swap between weapon classes more frequently, making my gaming experience more dynamic and strategic.
In a rather nuanced manner, this class system can go unnoticed by those who favor the weapon wheel or instinctively use it. However, the main advantage of this system is that it allows players to effectively wield four firearms interchangeably – two exchanged through regular swap commands and two exchanged by switching to a gun’s sibling using its unique input. This feature reduces the need for frequent visits to the weapon wheel, particularly for those who make their weapon choices spontaneously.
As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that The Dark Ages doesn’t just reinvent the wheel when it comes to what a Doom-style game ought to feel like, but it also intelligently addresses the challenge of managing weapons with its innovative solution for the weapon wheel.
In a new twist, “Doom: The Dark Ages” offers a unique sheen and taste compared to its earlier versions. Yet, as the “Doom” franchise consistently demonstrates its uncontainable spirit, numerous key changes in “Doom: The Dark Ages” lean towards enhanced playability and significantly reduced pauses in the fast-paced first-person shooter genre that it is renowned for, aiming to minimize idle periods.
