In comparison, it’s possible that the PlayStation 5 Pro edition of “Doom: The Dark Ages” might not satisfy the performance expectations of its owners, given that the frame rate of the game on this platform appears to lag behind the Xbox Series X in a recent assessment of all console versions. Despite boasting superior static visuals in the PlayStation 5 Pro version, it seems that the Xbox Series X outshines the PS5 Pro in terms of smoothness and technological superiority.
In contrast to “Doom Eternal” released in 2019, the upcoming game titled “Doom: The Dark Ages” serves as a prequel to the original 1993 game developed by id Software. This new title is set to debut on May 15, offering early access for two days prior. Players will delve into the origins of the Doom Slayer, who takes up arms as the final bulwark for a technologically advanced medieval-style kingdom that faces an assault from the forces of Hell.
The game will be available not just for PC but also on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5. Interestingly, the advanced features of the PlayStation 5 Pro offer significant improvements over Sony’s regular current-generation console. A review of the initial levels across these four platforms by Digital Foundry revealed some intriguing findings. One of the most striking aspects was that all versions run at a steady frame rate of 60 FPS, but only the Xbox Series X consistently maintained this frame rate without any significant drops throughout the first six game levels. In contrast, the PlayStation 5 Pro version occasionally dipped as low as the mid-50s, particularly during intense battles.
Xbox Series X Trumps PS5 Pro in Doom: The Dark Ages FPS Performance
In our console comparison, the Xbox Series X led in overall performance, but the PS5 Pro displayed images with a higher level of sharpness. Although both consoles had slight variations in visual quality, each taking the lead in various aspects, the PS5 Pro’s superior graphics capabilities gave it an edge due to its maximum resolution of 1800p. However, the game under review didn’t seem to leverage the PS5 Pro’s PSSR AI-upscaling, leading the evaluator to describe it as “one of the less impressive Pro upgrades in recent triple-A titles.
The evaluation could offer a sense of validation for Xbox gamers who have been experiencing a sense of being overlooked by the game’s recent promotional strategies. A contentious trailer for Doom: The Dark Ages, launched in late April, seemed to focus exclusively on Sony’s player base, even though Microsoft, the parent company of both id Software (the developer) and Bethesda (the publisher), owns the game. While some perceived this as an effort to let potential players know that the game will be accessible on more than just Xbox and PC, some dedicated Microsoft supporters found themselves feeling sidelined.
