Dota 2 Frostivus Patch Bans 65,500 Smurfs and Cheaters

As a seasoned Dota 2 gamer with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s Frostivus event has brought a breath of fresh air to the game. The massive ban wave against smurfs and cheaters is not just a welcome change, but a much-needed one. It feels like playing on an even field now, something I haven’t experienced in a long time.

The popular game Dota 2 has just welcomed Frostivus, offering players a festive event filled with gifts and rewards until January 15. In a recent blog post on their official site, it’s been shared that significant advancements have been made to enhance the gaming experience in the past week. This includes a widespread crackdown on cheaters and ‘smurfs’.

If you’re not familiar, “smurfing” is when skilled gamers make new player profiles to compete against less experienced opponents. This gives them an advantage as they are placed in matches that don’t truly reflect their skill level, making the games seem simpler than they would be with players of equal ability.

Enormous Wave

In the blog post, the team revealed that an end-of-year ban wave has washed over Dota 2, and in it, 65,594 smurf accounts were permanently banned.

Additionally, a substantial portion of players who engaged in disruptive behavior such as griefing, cheating, or operating maliciously were also permanently removed from the widely-played Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game.

Last year, King Kringle shattered his rule enforcer on a few individuals who truly earned it. Since then, he’s been tirelessly repairing and testing it on different Smurfs and video game adversaries. Now, he is prepared to anoint it once more with the blood of those on the naughty list.

During Frostivus, our usual practice is to handle bans and penalties out of sight. However, it’s become a tradition for us to share some insights into our ongoing work. This holiday season, we anticipate that you’ll enjoy games that are cleaner, more friendly, and fairer, as we’ve recently acted against approximately 65,594 smurf accounts.

In addition to Smurfs, we’ve taken strict action against numerous high-ranked players who disrupt the gaming experience by deliberately spoiling fun for others, taking advantage of in-game glitches, trading victories, and sabotaging the fair competition that forms the core of every game of Dota.

From now until January 15, Dota 2 players everywhere are encouraged to join in on the Frostivus celebration – a special event that offers generous prizes for every participant. Among these rewards, players will receive the brand-new ‘Spirit of Frostivus’ ability and access to the ‘Frostivus Forge’.
