As a seasoned Dota 2 player with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Abaddon is one of the most underrated heroes in the game, especially when it comes to the support role. His unique abilities and passive make him an essential member of any team, capable of turning the tide of even the most dire battles.
Abaddon is one of those heroes in Dota 2 that players hate going up against. While it isn’t favored as much in the pro scene, a good Abaddon player can take over the game all by himself in ranked matchmaking. Whether you’re playing him as a Core or a Support, fighting around the hero in team fights is quite tricky.
With Abaddon, his spells and powers may seem straightforward, but becoming proficient with him necessitates a deep understanding of his item selections and order of upgrades. As a Position 5 support, it’s crucial to grasp your role during team battles to aid your team effectively. In this guide, we will provide you with a comprehensive look at the hero, an explanation of how his abilities function, and suggestions for playing him in your games of Dota 2.
Dota 2 Abaddon Hero Overview
In Dota 2, Abaddon serves as a versatile Universal hero, adaptable for both support and core roles. While many players in the Archon to Ancient skill bracket opt for him as a Hard Carry or Offlaner, high-level players (High MMR) predominantly pick him as a Position 5 support. His knack for maintaining his teammates’ health during battles can be quite irritating for opponents to manage.
Like most heroes in Dota 2, Abaddon has four main abilities. Here’s how they work:
Ability Name | How it Works |
---|---|
Mist Coil (Q) | A unit targeted spell that can damage an enemy unit or heal a friendly unit at the cost of some of Abaddon’s health. |
Aphotic Shield (W) | An ally-targeted spell that creates a barrier around an ally that absorbs all damage, after which it expires. |
Curse of Avernus (Passive) | Abaddon’s auto attacks affect enemies with a curse that slows them and causes them to take damage over time. All attacks against the target affected with Curse of Avernus gain an attack speed boost. Works on opponent buildings. |
Borrowed Time (R) | When active, all damage done to Abaddon will heal him. It also applies a Strong Dispel on activation. The ability activates automatically when Abadddon’s health drops below 400. |
Disabling a break will prevent Borrowed Time from becoming active on its own. However, you are able to manually trigger this ability while under the influence of a stun.
Picking up Aghanim’s Scepter and Aghanim’s Shard item on Abaddon also upgrades his abilities:
- Aghanim’s Scepter: Increases duration of Borrowed Time. While Borrowed Time is active, anytime an ally takes more than 550 damage within 900 range of Abaddon, an individual Mist Coil will automatically fire toward that ally, healing them.
- Aghanim’s Shard: Causes Mist Coil to deal attack damage and apply effects from items and abilities.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share some insights about my favorite hero, Abaddon. His innate ability, Withering Mist, works by inflicting a debilitating effect on enemies whenever he lands a hit. This debuff diminishes their capacity to regenerate health, heal, steal life, and even spell lifesteal if their health drops below 40%. To make things more exciting, the Crownfall event update bestowed Abaddon with two unique Facets that you can select before each match begins. These Facets add an extra layer of strategy to his gameplay!
- The Quickening: Units dying near Abaddon lowers the cooldown of his abilities.
- Mephitic Shroud: Aphotic Shield absorbs more damage and reflects damage when received instead of exploding at the end.
Dota 2 Abaddon Pos 5 Build Guide
As Position 5 Abaddon, your primary focus should be ensuring your team’s cores survive. Although Abaddon can deal substantial damage with the right gear, farming opportunities are limited in this role. Moreover, due to your responsibilities such as map warding and dewarding, prioritizing items for increased damage isn’t practical.
It’s fortunate that among the Dota 2 heroes, Abaddon, serving as a Saving Support, stands out as one of the top choices. His abilities Mist Coil and Aphotic Shield work in sync to ensure your carry remains unscathed even under heavy enemy spellfire. Properly equipped, you can amplify his healing power and overall impact within the team, especially when playing the Pos 5 role.
Here’s a complete breakdown of how the build works:
Ability Order & Talent Build
Choosing Mephitic Shield as Position 5 Abaddon is typically the best option. This Facet significantly enhances your Aphotic Shield capability, making it more resilient to incoming damage. Essentially, it’s like having a Blademail with a short cooldown from the very start of the game, one that you can also protect your teammates with.
To begin, set Aphotic Shield to a value point at level 1. This enables you to dispel an ally if your adversary attempts to attack and harass the enemy in the Offlane by reflecting their damage back to them.
To help heal your ally and protect them in the lane, make sure to channel Mist Coil for the next two levels. This ability also functions as a powerful attack that can aid in securing kills during chases. Afterward, invest one more point into Aphotic Shield, and don’t forget to claim your ultimate at level 6.
Casting Mist Coil when Borrowed Time is active will also heal Abaddon.
Once that’s done, fully charge up Mist Coil, then activate Aphotic Shield. If there are no better alternatives, invest points into your passive skill. For your talents, choose the one that enhances your abilities for both Mist Coil and Aphotic Shield.
Item Progression
In the role of a support character like Abaddon, you won’t typically require numerous items to be effective. Instead, you’ll primarily rely on your spells for healing and shielding your teammates during battles. If you can help your team score some kills and clear away their Observer Wards, focus on obtaining items that enhance your support capabilities even more.
Here’s our recommended item build for Position 5 Abaddon
- Starting Items
At the beginning, Abaddon equips two Tango items, a set of Ironwood Branches, a Blood Grenade, and one Sentry Ward for the laning phase. This setup offers you the durability to engage in hit trades with your adversary, who is likely the Offlane character and the Position 4 support hero. The Sentry Ward can be employed to obstruct the enemy’s pull camp, while the Blood Grenade can assist in securing an early kill if the opposing duo overextends their position.
- Early Items
For your first major item pickup, you’ll almost always want to build the Ring of Basilius. Abaddon’s spells generally cost little Mana to cast. With the passive mana regen and armor from the Ring of Basilius, you can get on top of the enemy heroes to ensure your core gets to farm safely.
Following that, grab the Speed and Magic Wand boots. For your subsequent item, consider whether you’d prefer Arcane Boots or Tranquil Boots based on your late-game objectives. Typically, Arcane Boots is more advantageous when playing Abaddon.
- Core Items
In the role of fifth team member, the optimal artifact for Abaddon is Solar Crest. It empowers your ally with the Shine buff, boosting their armor, attack speed, movement speed, and a protective physical damage shield. This item is indispensable when you’re supporting Abaddon.
The Holy Locket is another fantastic addition to your arsenal, enhancing the recovery from your skills. This artifact multiplies the healing effect you inflict by 25%, making it a powerful ally when paired with your swift Mist Coil ability. As a result, your entire team will remain in top health throughout battles.
The last Core Item you’ll want to target as Abaddon is Aghanim’s Scepter. Sure, it’s an expensive item to build for support, but the upgrade to your Borrowed Time ability makes it impossible for the enemy team to take fights without killing you first.
- Situational/Luxury Items
On the role of a Position 5 support, it’s beneficial to gather several useful items in specific scenarios. Items such as Force Staff, Blink Dagger, or Glimmer Cape can aid in controlling the pace of fights by either escaping pursuers or positioning yourself advantageously against opponents.
Another option is to think about using the Aether Lens to cast your spells from a greater distance. If the game extends past its usual time, and you have accumulated enough Gold, consider enhancing your shoes. Arcane Shoes can be improved into Guardian Greaves for extra healing, while Tranquil Shoes can be upgraded to Boots of Travel for better positioning during catch and escape situations.
If your opponent’s team has an overabundance of Silence abilities, Eul’s Scepter of Divinity could prove to be an exceptional item selection.
