On Planet Vegeta, strength was the most important thing. The Saiyan society in Dragon Ball was structured entirely around Power Levels. King Vegeta and his family were part of the Elite Class, and their high Power Levels allowed them to rule the planet. Most other Saiyans were considered Lower Class. Only a small number, like Nappa and Paragus, were strong enough to be considered Mid Class – originally part of the lower Elite Class according to the Dragon Ball Z storyline.
Saiyans are unique because they have limitless potential. As Goku showed Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z, even those born with less natural ability can become incredibly powerful with enough training. While Low Class Saiyans start out weaker, Goku—who initially had a Power Level of just 5—eventually became one of the strongest beings in existence. Though destined for constant fighting, the most dedicated Low Class Saiyans can overcome their initial disadvantage and surpass even the Elite.

10. Gine Isn’t Even Strong Enough to Fight
The story Dragon Ball Minus revealed Goku’s mother, Gine, after years of focusing only on his father. Gine isn’t a fighter; her power level is quite low, so she works as a housekeeper on Planet Vegeta, cooking for Bardock and caring for their children. What’s unusual for Saiyans, Bardock and Gine have a loving relationship.
Gine isn’t known for any fighting abilities, but both Goku and Raditz showed great natural strength, suggesting Gine was likely among the stronger of the peaceful, lower-class Saiyans. Sadly, Gine perished on Planet Vegeta, and her husband, Bardock, wasn’t able to overthrow Frieza.
9. Fasha is the Weakest Member of Team Bardock
Before the story of Gine was revealed, many fans of Dragon Ball Z thought Fasha might be Goku’s mother because of her relationship with Bardock. Although she isn’t his mother, Fasha and Gine share one thing in common: they’re both relatively weak. While Gine is very gentle, Fasha can at least fight, but she’s still the weakest member of Bardock’s team.
Female Saiyans are rarely featured prominently, which highlights a larger issue with how Dragon Ball portrays its female characters. Powerful women often take a backseat to the male heroes. It wasn’t until the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super that we finally saw female Saiyans like Caulifla and Kale who were more than just minor characters.
8. Borgos is a Typical Saiyan Brute
The special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku doesn’t spend much time fleshing out Bardock’s team, so we don’t learn much about the character Borgos. In fact, Borgos doesn’t even speak in the original Japanese version; any personality traits he has are the result of changes made by Funimation when they created the English dub.
While not explicitly stated, Borgos seems to be more powerful than Fasha. His numerous scars indicate he’s fought in many battles and become stronger through Zenkai boosts – power increases gained from recovering from near-fatal injuries. However, most low-class Saiyans like Borgos wouldn’t have access to the best medical care, meaning his Zenkai boosts likely weren’t strong enough to make him more powerful than his fellow teammates.
7. Shugesh is the Second Strongest Saiyan on Bardock’s Team
You know, after Tora and Bardock, most fans agree that Shugesh is the strongest member of Bardock’s team. Like Borgos, he doesn’t really do anything amazing beyond being a pretty standard Saiyan fighter. But what I find cool is that, unlike Borgos, Shugesh actually has a personality! And if you check out the original Japanese version of the Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku special, he even gets to talk!
Shugesh, along with the rest of Team Bardock, is killed by Dodoria on Planet Meat. The fact that Frieza sent Dodoria, one of his elite soldiers, to eliminate them implies that Shugesh and his teammates were a bit more powerful than typical Lower Class Saiyans.
6. Tora is Bardock’s Right-Hand Man
In Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, Tora is Bardock’s close friend and second-in-command. He’s a Lower Class Saiyan, like the rest of Bardock’s team, and isn’t as powerful as Bardock, but is generally considered the strongest warrior among them.
The clearest sign that Tora is second in strength to Bardock is that he’s the last one standing when Dodoria attacks. He survives just long enough to speak to Bardock before Bardock attempts – but ultimately fails – to start a rebellion against Frieza.
5. Leek Was Strong Enough to Partner Up With Bardock on Cereal
Leek first appeared in Dragon Ball Minus and later in Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the Granolah the Survivor Saga of the Dragon Ball Super manga. We don’t know much about him, but his connection to Bardock is significant. Bardock was one of the most powerful Lower Class Saiyans before Planet Vegeta was destroyed, so the fact that Leek fought alongside him implies Leek was also a strong warrior.
In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Leek and Bardock were responsible for the destruction of Planet Cereal, almost wiping out the Cerealian people. Similar to many low-ranking Saiyans, Leek was later killed when Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta with a supernova.
4. Raditz Had a Power Level of 1,200 at Death
If Raditz hadn’t been defeated, he could have become an incredibly powerful warrior, possibly one of the strongest in the universe. While many fans underestimate him now, Raditz was actually the strongest fighter when Dragon Ball Z began. He had a Power Level of 1,200, which was far higher than both Goku and Piccolo’s combined, and they barely managed to defeat him, with Goku even sacrificing his life in the battle.
Raditz wasn’t the strongest Saiyan, but he was still more powerful than most of the Lower Class. His Power Level of 1,200 was a bit below what was needed to join King Vegeta’s elite army – the snipers in that group had Power Levels around 2,000, as shown in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
3. Bardock’s Power Level Was 10,000 When Frieza Killed Him
During the height of Planet Vegeta’s power, Bardock was the most powerful Saiyan of the lower class. Although not overwhelmingly stronger than other Saiyans, a significant power increase during the Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku special boosts his strength to 10,000, making him comparable to King Vegeta.
I’ve noticed a lot of discussion about whether the original Dragon Ball TV Special is truly part of the official story, especially after Dragon Ball Minus came out. But the manga actually references the special directly in a couple of panels, which suggests the events did happen in some form. And more recently, in the Granolah the Survivor arc, we see Bardock tap into a power similar to Ultra Instinct while battling Gas, giving him a temporary boost strong enough to contend with the strongest of the Heeters.
2. Turles Had an Even Higher Power Level Than Vegeta
Turles is a villain from the non-official Dragon Ball Z movie, The Tree of Might. Though he looks identical to Goku, he isn’t related to him or anyone in his family. The movie explains that their similar hair is common among Saiyans of lower rank. Like Goku, Turles has a great deal of potential, and reaches a Power Level of 19,000 in the movie. His original, natural Power Level is unknown.
It’s remarkable considering Vegeta’s power level was only 18,000 during the Saiyan Saga. After eating the Fruit of the Tree of Might, Turles’ power jumps to 300,000, surpassing almost everyone in the Namek Saga except for Frieza. As a villain meant to mirror Goku, it fits that Turles would rise above his humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful Saiyans, at least within his own movie’s storyline.
1. Goku is Proof That Even The Lower Class Can Rival the Elite
Even though Goku started with a very low Power Level of just 5, he’s become one of the strongest beings in existence. By the time of Dragon Ball Super, he’s reached a God-like level of power. Throughout the Dragon Ball series, Goku demonstrates that dedication to training and physical health can help you conquer any challenge. Motivated solely by his passion for fighting, Goku transformed from an ordinary human into someone as powerful as a god.
Watching Goku’s journey in the Saiyan Saga, it really struck me how much it was about defying expectations. Everyone assumed those born into the lower Saiyan class couldn’t compete with the elite, but Goku consistently proved them wrong. His fight with Vegeta was a prime example – he surpassed even the Prince of all Saiyans with the Kaioken technique, and you could really see how much that wounded Vegeta’s pride. And it wasn’t just that one fight; Goku was the first Saiyan in ages to achieve Super Saiyan and defeat Frieza, finally getting revenge for his people. Even now, with the incredible power of Ultra Instinct, he’s practically unstoppable, but he still keeps searching for stronger opponents and pushing his own boundaries. It’s amazing to watch.
