Dragon Ball: 6 Fights Better Than Goku vs. Vegeta

While fans adore characters like Goku and Vegeta from the Dragon Ball series, the show is truly famous for its incredible action scenes. With hundreds of episodes, movies, and spin-offs, Dragon Ball has consistently delivered exciting and memorable fights over the years.

I remember watching Goku and Vegeta fight for the first time during the Saiyan Saga – it was truly an iconic moment in the series. While we’d already seen how powerful enemies like Raditz and Nappa were, this fight felt different, a whole new level of intensity. Of course, Dragon Ball has given us so many amazing battles since then, some that I even think top this one. But this fight definitely stands out as one of the best.

Goku vs. Piccolo

The Climactic Finale to the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament

Chapters 181-194
Episodes 143-148

Piccolo is now a powerful defender of Earth and a close friend to Goku and his family, but he didn’t start out that way. He was born after Goku defeated his father, King Piccolo, and dedicated himself to getting revenge. This led to a showdown with Goku at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.

Piccolo presented Goku with his toughest battle yet. He was a more powerful and refined fighter than his father, and even though Goku had grown stronger too, Piccolo was clearly pushing him to his limits. Their fight was an all-out brawl where Goku managed to save the world and finally win the World Martial Arts Tournament. It was also the first time Goku showed sportsmanship by giving a Senzu Bean to a defeated opponent, a gesture he would repeat surprisingly often.

Goku vs. Beerus

Earth’s Strongest Protectors Get Completely Outclassed

Chapters 2-4 (Super)
Episodes 5, 9-14 (Super)

No matter what people think of Super, Dragon Ball fans really enjoyed the Battle of Gods movie when it was released. They were thrilled to see Goku and his friends return after a long time, and the new character Beerus brought a lot of potential to the series.

Beerus is unique because he’s one of the few opponents Goku might not be able to defeat – at least not right now. We’re accustomed to Goku always overcoming his enemies, but it became clear during their battle that Beerus was far more powerful. Even Goku’s new Super Saiyan God form wasn’t enough to win. Luckily, despite the intense fight, Beerus ultimately spared Earth thanks to Goku’s efforts.

Gohan vs. Perfect Cell

Cell Gets The Ultimate Reality Check

Chapters 404-416
Episodes 181-191

Many fans consider this the greatest battle in the whole series. By the end of the Cell Saga, Perfect Cell appeared unstoppable, and everyone anticipated Goku would defeat him as he had in the past. However, Goku surprisingly entrusted the fight to Gohan. Although Gohan had demonstrated impressive power, no one predicted he would be the one to ultimately win. As we all know, Gohan reached Super Saiyan 2 and easily overpowered the overconfident android.

While not a display of incredible fighting skill, Gohan defeating an enemy who had just threatened to obliterate the Earth was a powerful scene. Despite Goku’s sacrifice and Cell becoming even stronger because of one character’s overconfidence, the climactic battle – Cell’s Solar Kamehameha against Goku and Gohan’s combined Father-Son Kamehameha – is still one of the most memorable moments in Dragon Ball history.

Gogeta vs. Broly

The Perfect Way to Reintroduce Two Non-Canon Favorites

Chapters N/A
Episodes DBS: Broly Movie

The DBS: Broly movie officially added Broly to the main Dragon Ball storyline with a fresh take on his character. It also marked the first time fans saw Gogeta appear as part of the official story. The battles between Broly and both Vegeta and Goku were amazing, showing how quickly Broly learned and adapted to their attacks. When Broly transformed into his Legendary Super Saiyan form, Goku and Vegeta had no choice but to fuse and fight him as Gogeta.

This fight is visually stunning and incredibly well-choreographed. Seeing Broly unleash his full power, and Gogeta respond with his own incredible strength, was a real treat for longtime fans – arguably the best the series has offered in years. Even though Gogeta ultimately proved stronger, the sheer power both fighters displayed was thrilling and gives a glimpse of exciting things to come in the Dragon Ball universe.

Goku vs. Frieza

The Fight That Changed Dragon Ball Forever

Chapters 307-327
Episodes 86-105

When people discuss the greatest fights in Dragon Ball, this one always comes up. After the Piccolo Jr. Saga ended, the series started taking big risks. It broadened the world with new alien races, revealed Goku’s Saiyan heritage, and showed the original Z Fighters being overwhelmed by the Saiyan invasion – the Saiyan Saga dramatically changed Dragon Ball. However, the fight between Goku and Frieza on Namek truly transformed the series forever.

At the time, Frieza was considered the most powerful being in the universe. He proved to be an incredibly difficult opponent for Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin, constantly evolving and staying one step ahead of them. While Goku seemed like the only one who could potentially defeat Frieza in his final form, he needed to transform into a Super Saiyan to finally win. This moment is widely considered one of the most iconic in the series. The dramatic shift in power – from a closely matched fight to Goku completely dominating Frieza – instantly showed fans how incredibly strong this new transformation was and how much it would change the course of the story.

Goku vs. Majin Vegeta

A Shocking Rematch

Chapters 456-462
Episodes 228-233

While Goku and Vegeta’s initial fight was impressive, their battle as Majin Vegeta was much more emotionally charged. Even though Babidi was controlling Vegeta, it didn’t excuse his behavior. Vegeta’s anger and pride were clearly driving his actions, especially when he forced a fight with Goku by endangering people at the World Martial Arts Tournament. This was a disappointing step back for Vegeta, who seemed to be maturing as a husband and father to Bulma and Trunks. Ultimately, Vegeta needed to resolve his rivalry with Goku to find peace.

The fight revealed a lot about Vegeta, particularly his frustration with always being compared to Goku and feeling like he lived in Goku’s shadow. While his pride and flaws were clear, it was a powerful moment that showed fans the depth of his feelings. This battle was a turning point for his character, ultimately leading to his most heroic act: sacrificing himself to try and defeat Majin Buu. Though the original fight remains iconic, this one is easily among the best in the series.
