Dragon Ball: 7 Characters Who Could Lead Their Own Series

Despite having a large and diverse cast, Dragon Ball is fundamentally the story of Goku. From the very beginning – his journey with Bulma to collect the Dragon Balls – to his battles against powerful foes like the Red Ribbon Army, King Piccolo, and Frieza, and even saving the universe from Buu, Goku has consistently been the central figure in Dragon Ball’s most pivotal moments.

However, he isn’t the only compelling character in the series. Many of the supporting characters in Dragon Ball could easily carry their own stories. Given the number of spin-offs already created, it would be great to see some of these fantastic characters get their own dedicated series.

Master Roshi

Master Roshi was incredibly important at the beginning of the Dragon Ball series, training iconic characters like Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha. However, he’s become less of a key player over time. While he had a brief, impressive showing in the Tournament of Power, he mostly watches from the sidelines when major battles happen.

Roshi has had a full life, and while he’s retired now, he used to be much more involved in adventures. A series exploring his younger years – showing him as a teacher to Grandpa Gohan and the Ox-King, his training under Master Mutaito, and his fight against King Piccolo – would be a fantastic way to revisit the classic Dragon Ball story for longtime fans.

The Nameless Namekian

A spin-off story about King Piccolo’s origins – exploring the being he originally shared with Kami – could be really interesting. While we know some of the Nameless Namekian’s past, there’s still a lot of his life that remains untold.

It would be compelling to see a story about his life before he came to Earth and became its protector. Exploring his past – what made him the person he is, and what led to the internal conflict that forced him to separate his evil side into another being – would make for a really engaging series.

The Universe 6 Saiyans

The Saiyans from Universe 6 didn’t resonate with fans as much as those from Universe 7, with many finding them less compelling as characters. However, despite this, they have some unique qualities that could make for a great spin-off series.

Beyond revisiting familiar faces like Cabba, Caulifla, and Kale, the series could explore the broader Saiyan culture of Universe 6. Unlike the Saiyans we’ve seen before, who lost their planet to war, these Saiyans are less warlike and have a more developed society. This could offer a fresh perspective and help fans connect with these new characters.

Bardock

Bardock, Goku’s father, is a surprisingly popular character despite not being a main one. He’s been highlighted in several Dragon Ball stories, including the TV special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, the alternate timeline story Episode of Bardock, the Minus short, and most recently, the Granolah the Survivor Saga.

Bardock’s personality has evolved over time. He started as a typical, fierce Saiyan but later became a more thoughtful and compassionate character. Whether you prefer his earlier or later portrayal, there’s a great opportunity for a spin-off series focusing on his time with the Frieza Force. Seeing Bardock and his team on missions would allow fans to learn more about him, Saiyan culture, and life under Frieza’s rule. It would also provide a natural way to show how his character developed, transitioning from a simple warrior to the more mature figure seen in Minus and Super.

Future Trunks

Future Trunks instantly became a beloved character with his impressive debut, effortlessly defeating Frieza, King Cold, and their soldiers. Despite having a smaller role in recent storylines, he remains incredibly popular with fans.

While Future Trunks appears in side stories, many Dragon Ball fans would love to see a series focused on his future adventures, especially his battles with the Androids and Goku Black. He’s been involved in time travel and multiverse stories before, like in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, so a series more connected to the main Dragon Ball storyline might be the best approach.

Gohan

Gohan continues to be a fan favorite, even though some viewers have been disappointed with his character arc. Unlike other Saiyans, such as his father and Vegeta, Gohan has never been particularly enthusiastic about fighting. While he possesses the potential to be incredibly strong—and it seems he’s finally starting to embrace that—he generally prefers studying and a peaceful life, only fighting when he has to.

A spin-off series focusing on Gohan would really excite a lot of fans. Something similar in tone to the lighter, more everyday moments from the early Buu Saga would be a great concept. It could show what Gohan was doing between the Cell Games and when his father returned. While it’s unlikely to happen, as long as Gohan continues to be important in the main Dragon Ball story, most fans will be happy.

Vegeta

Honestly, I think Vegeta’s journey is one of the most compelling in all of Dragon Ball, right up there with Piccolo’s! It’s amazing to see how far he’s come – from being this terrifying villain who wanted to destroy the planet, to someone who’s a bit of an anti-hero, and finally, a genuinely good person. He really feels remorse for what he’s done and is constantly striving to be better, and that’s just awesome to watch.

A series focusing on Vegeta’s time serving under Frieza, before he appeared in Dragon Ball, would be fantastic. There’s a wealth of story potential considering how long Vegeta worked for Frieza, and it would allow us to see a young Vegeta and how the destruction of his home planet and the loss of his people impacted him. While Dragon Ball has shown us bits and pieces of this, many fans would love a full series dedicated to exploring his backstory.
