Great battle shonen anime relies on compelling villains, and Dragon Ball delivers some of the very best. Its villains aren’t just visually striking; they also push the heroes to their limits, creating exciting fights and unforgettable moments for viewers.
Just like the heroes, villains in Dragon Ball have a huge range of powerful attacks they can use in battle. These are some of the most devastating techniques used by the villains throughout the series.
Cell – Solar Kamehameha
Cell would have been a fantastic final villain for Dragon Ball. Many fans consider him the best antagonist in the series, largely because he was always improving, growing stronger with each transformation and eventually surpassing some of Dragon Ball’s most powerful heroes.
Cell’s most powerful attack almost destroyed any chance Earth had of being saved. Despite Gohan and Goku’s combined effort with the Father-Son Kamehameha, Cell seemed to be winning. Gohan only managed to overpower Cell when Vegeta unexpectedly fired a Galick Blazer, distracting him and allowing Gohan to finally defeat him.
Kid Buu – Planet Burst
Kid Buu was definitely the most powerful form of Buu. His immense strength and completely unpredictable behavior made him a huge danger to the entire universe and an incredibly difficult enemy to defeat.
Kid Buu’s most powerful attack is Planet Burst, which has the incredible power to destroy Earth multiple times. Like Frieza’s Supernova, it’s a huge energy sphere that Buu throws at opponents – and it can even absorb weaker energy attacks directed at it. He’s demonstrated its devastating strength by destroying planets, including Earth, proving how dangerous he becomes when not stopped.
Frieza – Golden Death Ball
Frieza is likely the most famous and influential villain in the Dragon Ball series. He was first introduced as the most powerful being in the universe – a cruel and nearly unbeatable enemy – and has demonstrated many incredibly powerful attacks during fights.
Frieza’s most powerful attack so far is definitely his Golden Death Ball. Although his Supernova can destroy planets, the Golden Death Ball is much more practical in a fight. We see Frieza use it against Goku in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, but Goku manages to repel it with a God Kamehameha. While we haven’t seen the full extent of Black Frieza’s abilities, it’s likely he’ll develop an even stronger version of the Death Ball to use against Goku and Vegeta.
Cell Max – Explosive Scream
Some viewers might see Cell Max as a weak villain. While he’s shown as a more powerful, ‘Berserker’ version of Cell, this power increase doesn’t feel justified and comes across as a way to once again make Gohan the strongest character.
Despite everything, Cell Max is a remarkably powerful modern Dragon Ball villain. His signature move, Explosive Scream, is incredibly destructive. It works like attacks such as the Spirit Bomb and Supernova – he gathers energy into a huge, gravity-powered ball that can also absorb energy from others, though it’s much more potent than Android 19 or Dr. Gero’s abilities. Luckily, Gohan managed to defeat it with his own powerful technique, saving the day once again.
Goku Black – Sickle of Sorrow
Goku Black is easily one of the most unforgettable villains in the Dragon Ball Super anime. While Turles explored a similar idea earlier, Goku Black stood out as a truly formidable and frightening opponent, matching Goku’s power in battle.
Black’s Sickle of Sorrow is likely his most powerful attack. It’s an enhanced version of his Violent Fierce God Slicer, usable when he’s in his Super Saiyan Rosé form. What makes this attack unique is that it manifests as a weapon, unlike most energy attacks which are simply blasts. Its power is immense, even capable of creating portals to other dimensions – something no other villain has ever achieved in the series.
Fused Zamasu – Holy Wrath
Fused Zamasu, created when Goku Black and Future Zamasu merged, is among the most powerful villains in Dragon Ball. His most devastating attack is Holy Wrath, which combines Black’s Black Power Ball with Zamasu’s God Splitter.
This attack is reminiscent of techniques like Supernova and the Death Ball – a huge sphere of energy that overwhelms everything around it with a wide-reaching impact. Fused Zamasu used it against Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Goku, and they struggled to defend against it. However, when he tried it again on the more powerful Vegito Blue, Vegito easily countered it. While incredibly strong, the attack wasn’t enough to defeat Vegito.
Jiren – Omega Heat Magnetron
It’s hard to see Jiren as a true villain, considering he was fighting to save his universe. However, he definitely pushed Goku and the rest of Universe 7 to their limits, proving to be their most difficult opponent yet.
Throughout the Tournament of Power, Jiren often seemed impossible to defeat. A prime example was when he unleashed his Omega Heat Magnetron on Goku. Even with his fully mastered Ultra Instinct, Goku had a hard time defending against it. Jiren used this incredibly powerful attack while at his absolute peak strength – his Super Full Power form – making it his most devastating technique.
