For a long time, Super Saiyan was the most iconic transformation in the Dragon Ball series, starting with Goku’s fight against Frieza in DBZ. But with the introduction of Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super‘s Tournament of Power, the series shifted its focus. Instead of constantly adding new levels of Super Saiyan, Dragon Ball began to emphasize unique transformations tailored to each character.
One of the best additions to Dragon Ball Super has been its take on character transformations. They’ve moved beyond simple power-ups to become a true reflection of each fighter’s unique personality and abilities. Transformations like Ultra Ego Vegeta and Gohan Beast feel meaningful because they’re earned and specific to each character, unlike earlier forms that anyone could achieve with little effort or story impact.
8. Super Saiyan Rage Future Trunks is Basically a God Form
In the anime Dragon Ball Super, Future Trunks achieves a special form called Super Saiyan Rage. This transformation hasn’t appeared since his fight with Zamasu, and very little is known about it. Visually, it looks like a mix between his Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan Blue forms.
During his training with Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta in the Goku Black Saga, Future Trunks likely gained some of Vegeta’s divine energy, similar to how Vegeta naturally learned to use it while training with Whis on Beerus’ planet. While not as incredibly powerful as other transformations, Super Saiyan Rage shows Trunks’ strong determination to save his future, and it allowed him to briefly cut Fused Zamasu in half—though it wasn’t enough to defeat him in the end.
7. Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black is What Happens When Saiyan Ki, God Ki, and Kai Ki Mix
Super Saiyan Rosé is fundamentally a variation of Super Saiyan Blue, but it’s special to Goku Black because his body contains a blend of Saiyan, God, and Supreme Kai energy. Interestingly, it was the very first unique transformation shown in Dragon Ball Super – Golden Frieza appeared in a Dragon Ball Z movie before the series began.
As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’m fascinated by Goku Black! His Super Saiyan Rosé transformation isn’t just a power-up, it defines him. It makes him way stronger than both Goku and Vegeta, and really shows how different he is – he’s got Goku’s body, sure, but it’s Zamasu’s cold, calculating mind driving everything. That Rosé form isn’t like the Super Saiyan Blue we usually see with Goku and Vegeta; it’s much more refined and…royal, which perfectly suits Zamasu’s personality and how he’s taken over Goku’s body. It’s a brilliant visual representation of his unique, twisted nature throughout Dragon Ball Super.
6. Planet Moro Literally Fused Himself With the Earth
Moro is a unique villain in the Dragon Ball series because he can use Ultra Instinct. However, his most powerful form comes from a shocking transformation: merging with the planet Earth. After gaining the angelic power of Merus, Ultra Instinct becomes too much for Moro’s body, causing it to break down. To survive, Moro uses this instability to fuse himself with the Earth.
Okay, so Planet Moro was seriously powerful! This form of Moro could drain the life energy from anyone on him, and honestly, Goku almost lost the fight. He only managed to win because Vegeta pulled off that incredible Forced Spirit Fission, and Uub – who was reborn with all of Majin Buu’s God Ki – gave Goku a massive energy boost! It really showed how unstable Moro was and just how desperately he needed to keep consuming energy to survive. It was a crazy battle!
5. Orange Piccolo Finally Rivals Goku & Vegeta After Years of Falling Behind
Akira Toriyama designed the Orange Piccolo transformation to bring Piccolo’s power level closer to Goku and Vegeta’s, after he’d been significantly weaker for a long time in Dragon Ball Super. While Orange Piccolo is currently the least powerful of the series’ five main characters, he’s still one of the few strong enough to potentially impact the fight against Black Frieza as the story heads towards its conclusion.
The orange color for Piccolo is primarily a treat for fans – which makes sense, as Piccolo has always been a favorite character of creator Akira Toriyama. This new look gives Piccolo a chance to be more involved in the upcoming Black Frieza Saga, rather than being left on the sidelines as he has been in most storylines since the Majin Buu Saga and throughout Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

4. Ultra Ego Vegeta Only Gets Stronger the More He Fights
Ultra Ego is Vegeta’s version of Ultra Instinct. While Goku’s transformation relies on honing his natural reflexes, Vegeta’s taps into his pride and raw power. This new form actually makes Vegeta stronger as he battles and takes damage – which is ideal, considering he often finds himself on the losing end of a fight.
I watched as Vegeta first achieved his Ultra Ego form during his battle with Granolah. It immediately shifted the fight in his favor! But it was clear he hadn’t quite gotten the hang of it yet; he kept running out of energy before he could finish Granolah off. It seems like once Vegeta truly masters this new power, he’ll be incredibly strong – potentially even stronger than Goku.
3. True Ultra Instinct Goku Found a Way to Stack His Forms On Top of UI
Ultra Instinct isn’t special to just Goku, but its perfected form, True Ultra Instinct, is. During the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Goku masters Ultra Instinct, learning to activate it at will, even when he’s not calm. This makes it function like any other power-up, while still giving him all the advantages of the initial, ‘Sign’ version of Ultra Instinct.
True Ultra Instinct lets Goku combine it with his Super Saiyan transformations, adding their power boosts to the already incredible speed and strength of Ultra Instinct. During his fight with Granolah, Goku layered both Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue on top of True Ultra Instinct to react faster and become even more powerful. By the end of the story, Goku became so skilled with True Ultra Instinct that he reached a level of power similar to his original Ultra Instinct form.
2. Gohan Beast is the Strongest Z-Fighter Form By a Mile
At the climax of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gohan achieved his new Beast form when Piccolo faked his own death during the battle with Cell Max, triggering a massive power boost from Gohan’s anger. Gohan Beast can be seen as a further evolution of Gohan’s Ultimate form from Dragon Ball Z, finally unleashing all the hidden potential he’d been developing throughout the series into one incredibly powerful transformation.
Gohan’s new Beast form makes him the strongest fighter in the Z-Fighters, even managing to defeat Goku – who was using his perfected Ultra Instinct – during a practice match in the final chapters of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero manga. This form allows Gohan to reach his full potential, and his incredible power comes from his strong emotions.
1. Black Frieza is a Nightmare Brought to Life
Black Frieza isn’t just Frieza’s strongest form in Dragon Ball Super; he’s the most powerful transformation in the entire Dragon Ball series. When he first appeared, Black Frieza instantly defeated Awakened Gas, and with a single, incredibly fast attack, he knocked out both Goku (in his True Ultra Instinct form) and Vegeta (with Ultra Ego) before they could even react. This form represents the peak of Frieza’s power, and it came about because Goku mistakenly underestimated him, which motivated Frieza to train and become even stronger.
Black Frieza is shaping up to be the next big bad – and possibly the last – in the Dragon Ball saga, but it’s hard to see who can defeat him. While Gohan Beast is incredibly powerful, his strength isn’t dramatically greater than Goku’s Perfected Ultra Instinct form from the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. As long as Black Frieza is a threat, the Z-Fighters are facing a serious challenge.
