Crunchyroll
and Netflix.
Stepping into the thrilling third installment of Dragon Ball DAIMA, I can’t help but feel like the puzzle pieces are falling into place, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of where this epic saga is heading. Interestingly enough, this latest episode seems to be mirroring a particular Dragon Ball series in a way that’s both intriguing and exciting!
As I delve deeper into this game, it feels eerily familiar, to the point where one could argue convincingly that this could be a hidden remake that I’m only now discovering. The question you might have is: what series am I referring to here? Let me share my thoughts on that.
Previously On…
Previously, our protagonists found themselves transformed into children at the hands of Gomah and his accomplices. However, due to a technicality, only one of Gomah’s wishes was granted. In response, he abducted baby Dende, planning to use him to summon the Dragon Balls again for his remaining two wishes. With their new childlike forms, Goku and his allies must adapt and regain their strength. This development has led Goku to reclaim his Nimbus cloud and red staff, which Master Roshi had been utilizing for drying laundry. As the episode concluded, a new character named Glorio emerged, sharing information about Gomah’s scheme and offering assistance in their struggle.
Who is Glorio?
As the last scene unfolded, I had to admit, I was in the dark about Glorio’s true identity. What I did know was that he had been watching Gomah when he set his scheme in motion (which explained why I wasn’t taken aback by the Z Fighters’ sudden transformation). Beyond that, however, there were still plenty of unanswered questions swirling around this mysterious figure. Well, it seems Glorio has decided to lend a hand to Goku and the gang. So, I guess we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled and see what his game plan is for this episode.
Outer Space Calls
The episode commences with Goku, Kaioshin, and Glorio departing Earth and traversing the cosmos towards the Demon Realm, reminiscent of the structure seen in Dragon Ball GT. This time around, it seems Akira Toriyama is determined to execute the Dragon Ball GT concept flawlessly, as suggested by this narrative. Unlike a traditional grand adventure, comedy takes center stage, starting with our heroes seeking passage to the Demon Realm from Warp-sama, a cosmic deity who seems to be a guardian of the universe. Predictably, Goku manages to cause trouble when he remarks that Warp-sama resembles a goldfish, leading Kaioshin to chide him for his lack of reverence towards the gods they’re soliciting aid from.
A Pin Number Saves the Day
True to Toriyama’s style, the resolution is far more outlandish than one might expect. Glorio has already secured passage from Warp-sama, and gains additional access by providing him with a pin code. That’s correct: in the Dragon Ball universe, you can traverse the cosmos through warp deities, as long as you possess the appropriate pin number.
The Demon Realm IS Huge Though
Despite Dragon Ball DAIMA leaning heavily on humor, it still manages to evoke a sense of familiarity with Dragon Ball Z. For one, once characters venture into the Demon Realm, they discover multiple worlds to explore. Fresh creatures and threats are being unveiled, while Goku struggles to adapt to the new gravity, making life harder for him. However, Glorio seems to move more freely due to his familiarity with these new realms. As for intense action, it’s taking its time to unfold.
The majority of the episode features our trio journeying from place to place inside Bulma’s flying pod, much like in Dragon Ball GT. This review has included several nods to Dragon Ball GT, as aspects such as plot points, structure, and humor seem strikingly similar to it. It almost feels as though Dragon Ball DAIMA is an unacknowledged reinterpretation of Dragon Ball GT. While Dragon Ball GT hasn’t been officially debunked by this series (it takes place before the last episode of Dragon Ball Z, making GT still canon technically speaking), it serves as a testament to what could have been if Toriyama had been more involved. Despite any complaints from Dragon Ball Z fans about the lack of action, those who’ve been watching Dragon Ball Super will find this feels like a fitting continuation.
