Dragon Ball Daima Just Revealed Majin Buu’s Origins

Dragon Ball Daima Just Revealed Majin Buu’s Origins

Key Takeaways

  • Majin Buu’s new origin is that he was created by a witch from the Demon Realm named Marba.
  • The reworked storyline raises questions about Bibidi’s motivation and how he knew about the Demon Realm.
  • Despite the origin shift, Majin Buu has had minimal screen time in Dragon Ball Daima thus far.

As a long-time fan of Dragon Ball Z and its subsequent series, I must say that the latest revelation about Majin Buu’s origin in Dragon Ball Daima has left me quite intrigued. Having grown up watching Goku and his friends battle it out against some of the most powerful villains in anime history, I never could have imagined that Buu would have such a fascinating backstory.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima, Episode 8, “Tamagami”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

In Dragon Ball Daima, creators aimed to introduce freshness by redefining Majin Buu’s backstory. Known for its pink form and uncontrollable fury from Dragon Ball Z, this being is undeniably one of the fiercest enemies the Z Fighters have encountered. Yet, despite its terror, there remains much enigma surrounding Buu; questions like, what kind of entity is it? Why was it created? What role does it play? Even its original origin story is the most obscure among all Dragon Ball villains.

Piccolo, Vegeta, and Cell each have well-defined histories. Fans are curious about the origins of Frieza’s species and where others from his race might be. At least, we know that Frieza is part of an alien race with immense potential. As for Buu, there are no other characters like him in the series (yet). Although Majin Buu-like creatures exist in some Dragon Ball games, they’re not part of the show’s continuity and were mainly created by Majin Buu himself.

Majin Buu’s Previous Origin Story

He Was Either Bibidi’s Creation or a Primordial Entity

In the “Energy Drain” episode, number 219 of Dragon Ball Z, we learn about Buu’s initial backstory. The Supreme Kai Shin and Kibito recount how a wizard named Bibidi or perhaps his clone Babidi, crafted Majin Buu. It’s interesting to note that both Bibidi and Babidi have questionable pasts, much like Buu. According to the same episode, it was claimed that Bibidi is Babidi’s father. However, in the Dragon Ball Full Color: Majin Buu Arc Q&As, the creator Akira Toriyama clarified that Babidi isn’t actually Bibidi’s son but rather a clone who Bibidi would create to assist him when needed.

Returning to the origins of Majin Buu, it’s important to note that this isn’t the first modification made to its backstory. Later, Akira Toriyama revealed in Saikyō Jump #6 (2014) that Buu is an ancient entity that has existed since time immemorial. Essentially, Buu is a force of nature, prone to violent outbursts that cause destruction across the universe before going into a slumber. Interestingly, this makes Majin Buu somewhat similar to Beerus, the God of Destruction, who also takes long naps after destroying worlds. However, all of this is set to change because Dragon Ball Daima has revised Majin Buu’s origins once more, allowing viewers to finally learn the identity of its creator.

Majin Buu’s New Origin Story

He Was Created by a Demon Realm Witch

In episode 8 titled “Tamagami”, Dragon Ball Daima disclosed that Majin Buu was actually manufactured by a sorceress named Marba from the Demon Realm, upon Bibidi’s request. However, Marba views Majin Buu as an imperfect creation because he became more evil and unruly than intended. After his creation, Majin Buu reportedly wreaked havoc throughout the Demon Realm, forcing the Glinds (the origin of Supreme Kais) to depart.

“According to Dr. Arinsu, Bibidi merely asked you to make Buu, as he didn’t possess the power to do it.”)

Although the new backstory raises some intriguing points, it leaves us wondering a couple of things: for instance, what motivated Bibidi to seek out a destructive entity like Majin Buu, and how did he manage to contact Marba for this purpose? The former question can be partially answered as Bibidi sought the destruction of the Supreme Kais, but the reasons behind his hostility towards them remain unclear. Future episodes of Daima may offer more insights into this matter. As for the latter question, it’s a mystery how Bibidi even became aware of the Demon Realm and Marba in the first place. It’s plausible that Babidi and Bibidi’s species might hail from the Demon Realm, which could explain their familiarity with Marba.

Where Is Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Daima?

He Hasn’t Had an Important Role Yet

Dragon Ball Daima Just Revealed Majin Buu’s Origins

As a passionate gamer and die-hard Dragon Ball fan, I find it quite unusual that they revamped such a prominent character’s origin, only for him to be nearly absent from the series. In “Dragon Ball Daima”, Majin Buu has made a brief appearance in episode 2, “Glorio”, where a young version of Buu (not Kid Buu) dashes past Mr. Satan, Goku, and Vegeta. He’s also featured in the opening theme, but that’s pretty much it. Given his shapeshifting abilities, he might be able to transform back into his normal form, but whether we’ll get to witness that remains uncertain, as Buu isn’t part of the group heading to the Demon Realm. It’s possible that a third team of Z Fighters could travel to the Demon Realm with Buu in tow at some point, but for now, there’s unfortunately, no indication of that happening.

It’s intriguing to imagine Marba’s response upon encountering the amicable, plump Buu who joined the Z Fighters. Will she express disappointment that her weapon turned into a peace-loving entity, or will she view this Buu as what she had desired all along – a potent being who maintains stability rather than acting unpredictably?
