As a long-time Dragon Ball fan who has been following this series since its humble beginnings in the 80s, I can honestly say that the recent news from Jump Festa left me absolutely thrilled! The idea of reprinting the original manga with dual covers by some of the most renowned manga artists like Togashi, Araki, and Oda is simply mind-blowing. It’s like seeing a childhood friend adorned in new clothes designed by your favorite fashion designers – it’s both nostalgic and refreshing at the same time.

This coming weekend in Japan, The Jump Festa is set to take place once more, and during its panel on the previous day, Dragon Ball shared significant updates. Just as anticipated, they briefly acknowledged the late Akira Toriyama, the mastermind behind the series who tragically passed away in March.

For those not in the know, Jump Festa is an annual gathering organized by Shueisha to honor the popular “Shonen Jump” series. Attendees who can make it on-site are treated to presentations featuring significant updates for numerous shows, as well as chances to try out new goods, participate in interactive activities, and purchase exclusive merchandise available only at the event. Held annually since 1999, Jump Festa typically takes place over a weekend in December.

At the Dragon Ball event, it was announced that manga enthusiasts have some exciting news to look forward to. The original Dragon Ball manga is going to be reissued in a special edition called the Dragon Ball Super Gallery, which will include both the original covers for the 42 volumes and unique versions created by renowned manga artists such as Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter), Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), and Eiichiro Oda (One Piece). Additionally, at this event, previously unseen illustrations drawn by Akira Toriyama were revealed for the first time.

The illustrations, unfortunately, are not publicly available yet (they likely asked people not to photograph and interrupted the transmission), but according to Oricon News, they depicted Majin Kuu and Majin Duu. Furthermore, they announced a new special chapter for the Dragon Ball Super manga (currently on hiatus), focused on Trunks and Goten and already slated for February 20, 2025.

What about the Dragon Ball Anime?

Fans will have to wait a little longer

Although the panel showcased voice actors from “Dragon Ball Daima,” no updates have emerged about the series, nor has any new anime been announced. Many fans hope that “Dragon Ball Super” will eventually receive a new season or series to cover additional manga arcs. However, given the complex legal disagreement over the rights of the series between Shueisha and a former editor, it seems that it may take some time before an anime series is approved for production.

Dragon Ball is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
