Legendary Super Saiyan first appeared in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan as a form not officially part of the main story. It’s the strongest a Super Saiyan can become, far exceeding their normal limits. When Dragon Ball Super made it an official part of the canon during the Tournament of Power, its power level jumped from being comparable to Perfect Cell to being on the level of a God.
Legendary Super Saiyan isn’t just the ultimate version of Super Saiyan; it grants incredible power that increases as the user fights. The most powerful Legendary Super Saiyans can easily defeat even the strongest warriors in Dragon Ball, making them formidable opponents in any life-or-death situation.
5. Dragon Ball Z’s Broly is the OG & Weakest Legendary Super Saiyan
I remember when Broly first showed up in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan. He was unbelievably strong, easily handling Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Piccolo all at once! Honestly, he only lost because the movie needed Goku to win – it felt like a guaranteed outcome, a classic case of the hero always pulling through.
Broly was designed to be the strongest villain in the entire Dragon Ball series, and his first two movies certainly demonstrate that. He gets more powerful as a fight goes on, making him incredibly difficult to defeat. However, Broly appeared relatively early in the series – particularly compared to Dragon Ball Super – which meant his strength in DBZ never quite reached the levels of characters from the early Buu Saga.
4. Kale Was the First Canon Legendary Super Saiyan
It’s easy to forget, but Kale was actually the first officially recognized Legendary Super Saiyan in the Dragon Ball universe. She appeared in the anime’s Tournament of Power before Broly was introduced in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Kale is a close friend of Caulifla and represents Universe 6 as its Legendary Super Saiyan.
Kale’s transformation into a Legendary Super Saiyan is dramatic. Before the change, she was weaker than Super Saiyan 2 Goku, but afterward, she becomes powerful enough to defeat even Super Saiyan Blue Goku. The Dragon Ball Super manga shows her destroying most of the universes on her own. However, unlike Broly from DBS, Kale doesn’t naturally possess the immense power needed to threaten actual Gods.
3. Karoly & Karoly Black Are Even Stronger Than Vegito
Karoly is a powerful character in the Dragon Ball series, first appearing in the 3DS role-playing game Dragon Ball Fusions. He’s created when Goku and Broly fuse together using a special technique called EX-Fusion. This technique combines the best parts of both the Fusion Dance and the Potara earrings method.
Because Karoly is a combination of Broly and Goku, he can transform into a version of the Legendary Super Saiyan form – though it’s a little different due to Goku’s influence. The game Dragon Ball Fusions claims Karoly is even more powerful than Vegito, which is incredibly strong. Broly can also fuse with Goku Black to become Karoly Black, a form that blends Super Saiyan Rosé with the Legendary Super Saiyan, but it doesn’t make him significantly more powerful than the original Karoly.

2. Everyone Forgets That Kefla is Technically a Legendary Super Saiyan
During the Tournament of Power, Caulifla and Kale fused using Potara earrings, creating Kefla, a remarkably powerful fighter. Because Kefla is partially Kale, she’s also a Legendary Super Saiyan. Notably, she’s the only character in the series who officially transforms into a Legendary Super Saiyan 2, as evidenced by the green tint that remains in her hair even in that form.
In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Kefla is incredibly strong, able to fight on almost equal footing with Goku when he’s using Ultra Instinct Sign. She only lost because Goku was the more skilled fighter. Many fans believe she’s the third strongest character in the Tournament of Power. However, the Dragon Ball Super manga portrays her as much weaker, placing her power level around that of Ultimate Gohan.
1. Broly From Dragon Ball Super Has the Potential to Be the Strongest Character in the Franchise
The Broly from Dragon Ball Super is by far the most powerful Legendary Super Saiyan we’ve seen – there’s a huge gap between him and any other version. By the end of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, he becomes so strong that only Gogeta can defeat him in a direct fight, and even then, Gogeta needs to transform into Super Saiyan Blue to do it.
The need for Goku and Vegeta to use a God form just to contend with Legendary Super Saiyan Broly really highlights how incredibly powerful Broly is. According to the manga epilogue of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Broly is currently training to perfect his Legendary Super Saiyan transformation and is already strong enough to practice fighting Gohan Beast in his standard Super Saiyan form. Once Broly fully masters LSSJ, he’ll be an unbelievably formidable opponent.
