Saiyans are known as some of the most powerful fighters in the Dragon Ball universe. Even though Frieza nearly wiped them out, the few Saiyans who survived became incredibly strong. Characters like Goku and Vegeta, along with their sons, have amazing abilities and constantly improve with each fight, allowing them to handle almost any challenge.
Saiyans are incredibly powerful, largely because of their ability to transform into different states. From the massive Great Ape to the iconic Super Saiyan forms and beyond, they can surpass normal limits. This details every transformation unique to the Saiyan race, excluding forms achieved through outside power-ups like Ultra Instinct or Ultra Ego.
Great Ape
The first and most common Saiyan transformation is the Great Ape. This powerful form allowed Saiyans to easily conquer planets, offering immense strength and destructive capabilities in battle. However, to become even stronger, Saiyans must eventually move beyond this initial transformation.
Super Saiyan
The Super Saiyan transformation remains the most famous and impactful moment in the entire Dragon Ball series. It dramatically increased Goku’s power, exceeding all expectations, and provided a crucial ability for him and future Saiyan characters to face increasingly powerful enemies. While many stronger forms have emerged since, none have captured the hearts of fans quite like the original Super Saiyan.
Super Saiyan Second Grade
Super Saiyan Second Grade is different from Super Saiyan 2. It’s a more powerful version of the original Super Saiyan form, achieved by training while transformed. While it significantly increases a Saiyan’s strength and speed, it drains energy quickly, making it difficult to maintain during long battles.
Super Saiyan Third Grade
Similar to the Second Grade transformation, Super Saiyan Third Grade offers a significant power increase, though it’s very demanding on the user. However, the added muscle mass can be a major drawback, as it sacrifices speed for strength. This makes it difficult to use effectively against opponents who are faster or more powerful. Like the Second Grade form, it also quickly drains energy, limiting when it can be used in battle.
Super Saiyan Full Power
Goku’s first time turning Super Saiyan was immensely strong, but it took practice for him and other Saiyans to fully control the power. The ‘Full Power’ Super Saiyan form represents the peak of this initial transformation, allowing users to use the power more naturally and effectively in combat, and with greater ease.
Super Saiyan 2
I always thought Super Saiyan 2 was right up there with the original Super Saiyan in terms of popularity. It first appeared to showcase just how powerful Gohan could become, but over time, other characters learned to achieve it too. Visually, it’s pretty similar to the first form, except it’s surrounded by a noticeable electric aura. Going Super Saiyan 2 gives you a huge increase in both speed and strength, but like earlier transformations, it eventually became less common as the series progressed.
Super Saiyan 3
Super Saiyan 3 didn’t appear often compared to other Saiyan forms. Beyond its obvious visual changes, this transformation really maximized a user’s energy output, granting immense strength. However, like the earlier Bulk Up forms, it drained energy very quickly.
Super Saiyan Rage
Currently, Super Saiyan Rage appears to be a unique transformation exclusive to Trunks. This form harnesses the user’s anger and intense feelings to significantly increase their power. Trunks demonstrated the effectiveness of Super Saiyan Rage by successfully fighting against powerful opponents like Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black and Future Zamasu, making it a surprisingly valuable ability.
Super Saiyan 4
Fans have wanted it for years, and now DAIMA has brought back Super Saiyan 4! It’s a bit difficult to compare to other Super Saiyan forms, though. It’s more powerful than Super Saiyan 3, but doesn’t seem to reach the level of Super Saiyan God or Blue. It maintains the same power level as it had in GT, and while Goku has surpassed it, the series might revisit this form in the future.
Legendary Super Saiyan
The Legendary Super Saiyan is a rare and incredibly powerful transformation known for its immense strength and destructive capabilities. Currently, only three characters – Broly, Kale, and Kefla – have achieved this form. Similar to Super Saiyan Grade 3, it grants a huge increase in power and muscle size, but with even greater force and without any loss of speed.
