As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’ve always been captivated by the Saiyan transformations! It all started with the terrifying Great Ape, but then we got the Super Saiyan forms, which really blew everyone away. Of course, we’re always debating how powerful each one is, and that’s fun, but honestly, what really sticks with me – and I think with a lot of fans – is just how amazing they look. The designs are just incredible!
The Saiyan race in Dragon Ball boasts the most transformations of any group. Here’s a rundown of each one, and how they compare visually.
Great Ape
The first Saiyan transformation, the Great Ape, is a fearsome form accessible to all members of the Saiyan race. Its design is remarkably simple – essentially a giant monkey – but this simplicity, combined with its portrayal as a tremendously powerful state, made it memorable throughout much of the series.
Golden Great Ape
I’ve seen this transformation described as a Great Ape gone Super Saiyan, and that’s a pretty good way to put it. It’s not officially part of the main story, but it’s a fun variation. It mostly looks like a regular Great Ape, but covered in golden fur and with spiky hair – basically, it takes the familiar Great Ape look and adds a Super Saiyan twist.
Pseudo Super Saiyan
The Pseudo Super Saiyan is a unique, non-official transformation that stands out among others in the series. It takes a character’s normal appearance and combines it with features of a Super Saiyan, such as spiky hair and a golden glow. The addition of blank eyes is a particularly effective detail, making the form surprisingly more menacing than the standard Super Saiyan. Interestingly, this design appeared a full ten days before the official Super Saiyan transformation was revealed in the manga, offering fans an early glimpse of what would become one of anime’s most recognizable looks.
Super Saiyan God
Looking back, the Super Saiyan God transformation from Dragon Ball Super doesn’t quite live up to the hype. It quickly became overshadowed by later forms, and the design itself isn’t particularly striking. While the idea of a base-form-like transformation with red hair and a red and yellow aura was interesting, Super ultimately delivered much more impressive designs.

Super Saiyan Rage
The Super Saiyan Rage form looks a lot like a Super Saiyan 2, with hints of the earlier, bulkier Super Saiyan Third Grade transformation. Its combination of the classic yellow aura and bright blue, lightning-like energy makes it a striking visual. The character’s blank eyes are reminiscent of the ‘Pseudo Super Saiyan’ form, but feel like a more polished and complete version of that design.
Super Saiyan Rosé
I always thought Super Saiyan Rosé was really cool, even if it wasn’t everyone’s favorite! The pink, purple, and red color scheme was such a refreshing change from the usual blue, and it really set the tone for Goku Black. He was such a scary villain, and Rosé’s dark, intimidating energy just screamed how dangerous he was. It was the perfect look for him, honestly!
Super Saiyan Blue
Super Saiyan Blue, the form that came after Super Saiyan God, stuck around in the series for a good while. While the blue hair was a bit of a surprise for some, it’s a solid update to the original Super Saiyan transformation. Essentially, it is Super Saiyan, but with a striking blue color for both the hair and energy. That’s not a flaw – it’s a much brighter and more noticeable form, and many fans find it more memorable than what came before.
Blue Evolved
While Evolved looks a lot like Super Saiyan Blue, there are some key differences. The blue is a much deeper shade, giving it a more powerful appearance. The energy surrounding the user is also more intense, trading the original’s bright yellow glow for a colder, purely blue effect. It’s a subtle change, but Evolved ultimately looks more impressive than the standard Super Saiyan Blue.
Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken
The combination of Super Saiyan Blue and Kaio-ken creates a striking visual effect. The way the red Kaio-ken aura layers around the lighter aura of Super Saiyan Blue is its most noticeable feature, and it helps this form really pop compared to others seen in Dragon Ball Super. Interestingly, the manga depicts this combination very similarly to regular Super Saiyan Blue, making the anime version a more visually distinct and preferred choice.
Super Saiyan 3
Super Saiyan 3 is instantly recognizable, mainly because of its incredibly long and spiky hair. Every Super Saiyan form has a distinct hairstyle, but this one is truly over the top. A particularly striking feature is that the user’s eyebrows disappear completely. While it didn’t have as significant a role in the Dragon Ball story as Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3 remains one of the most memorable transformations.
