Throughout its many adventures, Dragon Ball has featured a fantastic cast of villains, ranging from the comical Pilaf Gang to genuinely terrifying threats like Demon King Piccolo and the Saiyan invasion. Characters like Cell and Majin Buu also posed huge challenges, but none have resonated with fans quite like Frieza. He remains the most popular and influential antagonist in the series.
Frieza didn’t initially seem like a major threat, but he quickly proved his power on Planet Namek, becoming the most formidable enemy Goku and his friends had ever encountered. With Frieza expected to play a significant role in future Dragon Ball storylines, let’s revisit some of his most impressive and overwhelming moments.
Toying With Nail on Namek
Namek is seriously where so much of Frieza’s awesomeness went down! It wasn’t his most famous fight there, but it really showed everyone just how powerful this villain was. Like the rest of us on Namek during that whole saga, Frieza was hunting for the Dragon Balls, and figuring out how to use them. That’s what led him to Guru, and eventually to a battle with Nail. Now, Nail was the strongest Namekian around at the time, but honestly, he didn’t stand a chance against Frieza’s power.
Despite a valiant effort, Nail is quickly defeated by Frieza. Frieza easily overpowers Nail, even playfully disarming him without delivering a finishing blow. However, Nail’s delaying tactics prove useful, giving Dende enough time to share the password for the Namekian Dragon Balls with Gohan and Krillin. While Frieza seemed to recognize Nail was stalling, the fight clearly demonstrated just how powerful and dangerous Frieza was going to be throughout the rest of the story.
Unleashing His Multiple Transformations on Namek
Frieza’s multiple transformations were a defining characteristic of his fight against Goku and his friends. While transformations weren’t new to the series – characters like Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, and even Zarbon had all transformed before – Frieza took it to another level. No villain up until that point had demonstrated so many different forms during a single battle, making him an incredibly formidable opponent.
I watched as Frieza, even in his initial form, easily handled most opponents. He beat Nail without even trying and managed to keep Krillin, Gohan, and Vegeta at bay. When he shifted into his Second Form, he dominated them all. Piccolo did give him some trouble, which led Frieza to power up to his Third Form – that was more than enough to deal with Piccolo and everyone else. Finally, he transformed into his Final Form, which was his most powerful state. Thankfully, Goku arrived just in time and actually put up a fight, eventually transforming himself and ultimately defeating Frieza.
Taking on Jiren With Goku
Frieza faced defeat on both Namek and Earth, but he made a comeback in Dragon Ball Super. He first returned as the villain in the Resurrection ‘F’ arc, and later surprisingly teamed up with Goku and the other fighters from Universe 7 during the Tournament of Power. This alliance wasn’t popular, particularly with Vegeta, and Frieza never truly became a hero. However, he did provide valuable assistance to Universe 7 throughout the tournament, proving to be a powerful asset. He was especially crucial in their victory against Jiren, making a significant contribution to Universe 7 winning the entire tournament.
Jiren was much stronger than Frieza, but Frieza still helped defeat him by working with Goku. They never would have teamed up under normal circumstances, but with the entire universe at stake, they proved to be a surprisingly effective pair. Neither could have beaten Jiren alone, so they combined their power to force him out of the arena, leading to a close match where all three fighters were knocked out, leaving Android 17 as the ultimate winner.
Surviving in Space After His Fight With Goku
By the time the battle with Frieza concluded, Goku had become significantly stronger, easily defeating him in his Super Saiyan form. With Planet Namek about to explode, Frieza was utterly defeated after his fight with Goku. Even at his maximum power, Frieza couldn’t compete with Goku’s transformation. In a desperate move, Frieza accidentally cut himself apart with his own attack, and was then seemingly destroyed by Goku’s final Kamehameha wave. However, this wasn’t the end of Frieza’s story.
I remember watching Frieza get completely overpowered by Goku, but it was amazing – he didn’t actually die on Namek, even when the planet blew up! He was just drifting through space, badly hurt and missing a lot of himself. Thankfully, his father, King Cold, found him and gave him robotic replacements for the parts he’d lost. It’s incredible to think that even out in the vacuum of space, Frieza, who was already such a strong enemy, could somehow hold on and survive without air.
Achieving Golden Form With 4 Months of Training
Bringing Frieza back was largely done to please fans. While villains like Cell and Buu were stronger during their own stories, fans still loved Frieza and wanted to see more of him. The movie Resurrection ‘F’ finally delivered on that wish, but this Frieza wasn’t quite the same. He returned with a brand-new transformation. Instead of using Cooler’s popular Fourth Form or bringing in Broly later on as canon material, Akira Toriyama decided to give Frieza a completely original power boost.
Frieza’s new ‘Golden Frieza’ form restored him to a position of immense power, even after being deceased for a considerable time and surpassed by fighters like Goku, Vegeta, and others. Remarkably, Frieza achieved this boost in power without the decades of training that his rivals underwent. Unlike Goku and Vegeta, Frieza never prioritized training when he was younger. However, after just a few months of effort, he once again became one of the universe’s most dangerous foes.
Destroying Planet Vegeta And Most of the Saiyan Race
Before the introduction of Destroyers, wiping out an entire planet was considered an unbelievably powerful and terrifying act, achievable only by the strongest beings. Frieza dramatically altered the Dragon Ball universe when he decided to eliminate the Saiyan race, who had previously been forced to serve him. Even though he was far stronger than any individual Saiyan, and they were valuable assets to his army, Frieza feared their future power enough to destroy both the Saiyans and their planet.
This decision had huge consequences for Goku and Vegeta, two of the most central characters in Dragon Ball, and left very few Saiyans alive. Frieza’s actions made previous destructions seem insignificant. Although Bardock and other Saiyans attempted to fight back, Frieza’s Supernova destroyed them all, wiping out the entire Saiyan race on Planet Vegeta. While the Saiyans weren’t always heroes, Frieza proved he was the greatest danger to the universe by eliminating them.
Taking Out UI Goku and UE Vegeta With One Shot
Frieza’s recent power-up is arguably his most impressive feat yet. During the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Goku and Vegeta struggle against formidable new enemies like Granolah and Gas. Even in their strongest forms, the duo find Gas to be a tough opponent. However, near the end of their battle on Planet Cereal, Frieza arrives and quickly defeats the already weakened Gas and Elec. He then shocks Goku and Vegeta by revealing he’s been training in a time-accelerated room for ten years, allowing him to reach a new, powerful form called Black Frieza.
Everyone expected a lengthy fight between Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza now that Goku and Vegeta have mastered powerful new forms. However, the battle was surprisingly short! Frieza quickly overpowered them both. Luckily, he didn’t finish them off, leaving an opportunity for Goku, Vegeta, and a stronger Gohan to fight back later in the series. Fans have been eager to see what Frieza would do next for years, and this recent display is hard to beat.
