Dragon Ball: Goku’s Form After Ultra Instinct, Explained

Following the sad death of Akira Toriyama in March 2024, the Dragon Ball series has paused production. This has disappointed many fans, who were enjoying the new path the story was taking and were excited about the fresh, modern arc that was beginning after the Super Hero arc finished.

After nearly two years of being on hold, Dragon Ball Super is expected to return in 2026, with Toyotarou leading the creative process. The story will continue, meaning new and powerful villains will emerge, pushing our heroes to reach even greater levels of strength and unlock new transformations. Let’s explore what possibilities might await Goku if he surpasses his current Ultra Instinct form.

What Is Ultra Instinct, And Why Is It Such A Powerful Transformation?

The Technique of the Angels

Ultra Instinct is essentially the ultimate martial arts technique, letting a fighter’s body react and defend on its own. This allows them to focus entirely on attacking, without needing to consciously block or dodge.

In the Dragon Ball Super series, characters strive to perfect their martial arts, and Ultra Instinct is presented as the ultimate level of mastery. It’s a technique naturally possessed by the Angels, representing the peak of combat skill and considered the most challenging to learn in the entire multiverse. The Angels themselves can use it easily due to their inherent talent.

Honestly, I’m really pushing the boundaries of Ultra Instinct – I’ve even surpassed Merus in my control of it. But it’s amazing to think that the Grand Priest’s Ultra Instinct is on another level entirely, even more precise and refined than what I can achieve. It’s incredible to witness such power!

I’ve noticed that even when someone accesses this technique, their skill level varies a lot. Just knowing how to do it doesn’t automatically make them incredibly powerful. A good example is Goku’s training with Whis. Whis has been practicing this for millions of years and is a true master of Ultra Instinct, so he’s far more precise and effective with it than Goku is.

Whis isn’t as skilled with Ultra Instinct as his father, the Grand Priest, who has been practicing it for a much longer time. Because of his incredible mastery, the Grand Priest is widely considered one of the five strongest characters in the entire Dragon Ball universe. Many fans even rank his fighting skills and technique higher than Grand Zeno’s, although Zeno possesses unmatched raw power.

Beyond letting users focus entirely on attacking and providing automatic defense, Ultra Instinct significantly increases a fighter’s resilience. This was clearly demonstrated in Goku’s fight with Moro, where Moro actually broke his hand trying to hit Goku.

I remember the last time Goku used this technique – it was during the Super Hero arc, when he transformed against Gohan Beast. They were incredibly evenly matched! Seeing how much he’s developed Ultra Instinct throughout the recent parts of Dragon Ball Super really shows how he’s become one of Universe 7’s strongest fighters, and honestly, one of the most powerful beings in the whole multiverse.

Will Goku Achieve Another Transformation Even Stronger Than Ultra Instinct?

Goku’s Next Power-Up

  • A possibility for Goku to get even stronger.

After the storylines featuring Granolah and the Super Hero arc concluded, fans started speculating about where the story could go next, particularly concerning new transformations and increasing power levels. Dragon Ball often introduces villains stronger than ever before, but a challenge arose: Goku and the Z Fighters had seemingly reached their peak strength. This left many wondering how they could possibly overcome enemies even more powerful than themselves.

It makes sense that the show will need new, more powerful transformations when it comes back, especially since the upcoming villains seem stronger than the heroes. A clear example of this is Black Frieza, who easily defeated both Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with a single blow.

I’ve been thinking about what Goku’s next big power-up might be, and it seems most likely to be another step forward with Ultra Instinct. He’s already incredibly skilled with it, surpassing even Beerus, and it could evolve to become even more precise – potentially reaching a level comparable to what the weaker Angels use. Right now, he’s the most proficient user of Ultra Instinct among anyone below the Angels themselves, which is pretty amazing.

Right now, we can’t know exactly what a new form of Ultra Instinct will look like. However, we can make some informed predictions. Goku has already adapted Ultra Instinct flexibly to different fights, like when he used True Ultra Instinct against Gas, so it’s likely any future form will also be tailored to the situation.

Normally, I need a peaceful state of mind to activate Ultra Instinct. However, when I’m in this form, I can actually use my feelings to my advantage.

Ultra Instinct demands a fighter suppress all emotion, something that clashes with Goku’s instinctive Saiyan tendencies. He overcame this by achieving True Ultra Instinct, which let him harness his feelings to grow stronger while using the technique. Therefore, any potential form beyond Ultra Instinct would likely be a further development of True Ultra Instinct.

True Ultra Instinct’s design was very similar to Ultra Instinct Sign – it largely resembled Goku’s normal form. If this pattern holds, the next version could look like Goku’s Super Saiyan form combined with the energy and abilities of Ultra Instinct. That would be an awesome new development for fans to witness.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
