Although Toriyama worked independently on this project, Torishima had previously contributed to his work, particularly on a series called Dr. Slump. Similarly to how Torishima has sparked debates with his remarks about Dragon Ball, a project he was directly associated with, he’s also caused a stir with peculiar observations concerning other prominent series where he did not contribute.
Initially, Torishima expressed doubts about One Piece on several occasions, even predicting it wouldn’t succeed. In fact, when Eiichiro Oda first introduced the series, Torishima voiced his skepticism. This is quite surprising to many fans considering that One Piece is currently the highest-selling manga of all time and has held this position for a considerable period. Evidently, Torishima’s predictions about One Piece were off the mark.
Torishima has voiced some criticism towards the widely acclaimed series Demon Slayer. Notably, he stated recently that he doesn’t find the manga particularly impressive, attributing its popularity more to the success of the accompanying anime rather than inherent quality. Additionally, in the past, he expressed his view that the battle scenes could use improvement.
It’s perfectly fine for Torishima not to be fond of the Demon Slayer anime, but it’s important to acknowledge that the anime wouldn’t exist without Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga and the story it tells. The series has gained immense popularity, with over 220 million copies in circulation across just 23 volumes. This is an astounding achievement, and few manga series will ever reach such heights.
Torishima: Demon Slayer’s popularity surged due to its exceptional anime adaptation. While the original manga wasn’t particularly outstanding, it was like transforming raw coffee beans into a rich, flavorful cup by roasting and brewing them – that’s how the anime elevated the source material.
It’s clear that Kazuhiko Torishima often appears quite blunt or abrupt to a significant number of the show’s followers, particularly when expressing disapproval towards things he isn’t fond of.
