Dragon Ball: Sparking Zeros Goku Black Episode is the Odd One Out

As a long-time Dragon Ball fan who has followed the series since its inception, I must admit that I was initially thrilled about the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. The game seemed to be a promising continuation of the beloved Budokai Tenkaichi series and had all the makings of a fantastic addition to my collection. However, upon playing through the episode battles, I found myself quite disappointed with one particular storyline – Goku Black’s.

At the onset of the game “Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero“, players are still diligently exploring its diverse game modes. As the titled successor to the renowned “Budokai Tenkaichi” series from the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii, “Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero” aimed to deliver a comprehensive experience, and it appears to have achieved this goal. The Custom Battle mode alone offers unique appeal for creative “Dragon Ball” enthusiasts, but surprisingly, the online aspect of “Sparking Zero” has also demonstrated a rich and competitive gameplay environment.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, I’ve got to say that there are multiple modes to explore. Classic Dragon Ball Tournaments continue to evolve, offering a more diverse experience than before. Then there’s the Gallery mode, jam-packed with commentary that outshines even the encyclopedia in Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

Goku Black’s Unusual Sparking Zero Story Explained

In five out of the eight story arcs, the spotlight is on the main characters from Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Future Trunks. The other three are assigned to Frieza, Goku Black, and Jiren. It’s becoming apparent that there’s an imbalance in their screen time. Although all these characters appear in various sagas, Goku Black and Jiren are only significant figures in one Super Saga each. Given that they were the unbeatable villains of those sagas, they don’t take part in many battles, with Goku Black participating even less than Jiren.

Even Jiren’s Episode Outdoes Goku Black’s

In the Tournament of Power, Jiren faces numerous opponents compared to Goku Black who engages in only a few battles before reaching his endings. Some of Goku Black’s endings are similar due to common circumstances, whereas Jiren has two distinct paths leading to straightforward conclusions. Although both characters reach their ends, Jiren’s ‘Sparking Episode’ route offers a unique tie-in to the Dragon Ball Super manga and provides character growth, while Goku Black’s episode seems rather superfluous in its presentation.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Could Have Done Much Better Than Goku Black’s Story

Following tough challenges within the late-game content of Sparking Zero, one might wonder why Goku Black’s chapter is included at all, given the meager rewards. One of the most intriguing aspects of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is its potential reimagining of Goku Black as a character in a Gohan Sparking Episode. Unfortunately, Goku Black’s storyline seems detached from the Tournament of Power, an event that even Future Trunks experiences in another Sparking Episode. It’s reasonable to suggest that Sparking Zero might have benefited by replacing Goku Black’s episode with something else, despite the potential injustice this move could inflict on one of Dragon Ball Super‘s memorable antagonists.

Which Characters Could Have Had Better Episodes Than Goku Black

Previously, titles like Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi introduced characters such as Raditz and Zarbon, with Krillin having numerous fights worthy of an entire episode. However, among these candidates, it is Majin Buu who stands out as the top choice. Although Buu spends most of Dragon Ball Super on the sidelines, a Sparking Episode could potentially see him qualify for the Tournament of Power instead of Frieza. This is merely the beginning of what could have been an exceptional character episode in a hypothetical series titled Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.
