Dragon Ball Super Hits 12 Million Copies: What’s Next for the Manga?

Summary

  • Dragon Ball Super has sold over 12 million copies in Japan, despite being serialized in a niche magazine.
  • Fans are eagerly waiting for Chapter 205, hinting at a potential return soon.
  • Speculation about a return in April arose after a V-JUMP ad, but official confirmation is still pending.

Last week, the 24th volume of Dragon Ball Super was published in Japan. As of now, there’s no word on when the show will return, but fans can rejoice as the series has achieved a significant landmark.

For quite a while now, we’ve been waiting for new episodes of Dragon Ball Super. It initially took an indefinite leave back in March 2024, but briefly returned last February with a special chapter. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when the eagerly anticipated Chapter 205 will be out.

Dragon Ball Super Reaches Major Milestone

It’s been announced that following the release of DBS Volume 24, the series has surpassed 12 million copies in circulation within Japan. This figure might appear modest when compared to the original manga’s global sales of around 260 million copies, but it’s important to note that Dragon Ball Super is published in a specialized magazine called V-JUMP, rather than Shonen Jump.

Despite the fact that Shonen Jump is a weekly publication with approximately 1.7 million copies sold per issue, it’s remarkable to consider how well a title from the monthly magazine V-JUMP, which typically sells around 187 thousand copies per issue, has managed to perform in terms of sales.

In terms of the storyline, since Volume 24 wrapped up the Super Hero Saga, we can expect Chapter 205 to mark a fresh beginning, introducing a new story arc. There’s a lot of excitement among fans as they anticipate the arrival of the Black Frieza arc, but Toyotaro remains tight-lipped about the upcoming saga.

A special video was also released to celebrate the new volume:

Could Dragon Ball Super Come Back in April?

In late March 2025, the most recent edition of V-JUMP failed to disclose any details concerning the resumption of the series. Despite anticipation for positive updates, fans felt disappointed upon its release.

In the final pages of Volume 24, there’s an advertisement for a V-JUMP release (April 21st) showcasing Dragon Ball alongside other series. Some enthusiasts interpreted this as a potential return of DBS this month, but it may simply be a highlighting of the popular titles currently serialized in the magazine, not necessarily those with new chapters coming up soon.

It appears that fans must be patient and wait for the release of the magazine to decipher the true meaning of the advertisement; hopefully, they’ll receive positive updates regarding the series then.

You can find the English version of “Dragon Ball Super” manga over at MANGA Plus. For fans, the initial chapters and some recent ones are accessible for free. However, if you’d like to read every chapter that has been released thus far, a subscription is required.
