Dragon Ball Super: How Does One Become a God of Destruction?

Summary

  • Gods of Destruction can die, retire, or be ousted for breaking rules like fighting each other.
  • Potential replacements can be chosen by Zeno or their universe’s Angel, based on strength and mindset.
  • Universe 7’s God of Destruction, Beerus, doesn’t have a suitable replacement among the mortals in his universe yet.

As a long-time fan of the Dragon Ball universe, I can confidently say that becoming a God of Destruction is no easy feat. With my years of watching and analyzing this captivating series, I’ve come to appreciate the intricate details behind these powerful beings.

In the universe of Dragon Ball Super, Beerus and Champa, along with other Gods of Destruction, possess immense power that can put entire universes at risk. However, not even these mighty beings are immune to death or retirement. Over long periods, ranging from hundreds of centuries to millions of years, a God of Destruction may depart, triggering a search for a new entity to assume their role.

In the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime, there hasn’t been a situation where a God of Destruction is replaced yet, but it is possible based on certain events. One notable character who hints at this is Toppo from Universe 11, who is both a fighter and a trainee for a God of Destruction, eventually expected to replace Belmod. This suggests that Gods of Destruction can indeed be replaced occasionally. However, the specifics of how this transition occurs remain unclear in the storyline.

How Does a God of Destruction Quit or Retire?

Do Gods Need a Two-Week Notice?

To remove a Destroyer from their position before a new one is appointed, they must first lose their life. However, unlike these powerful beings, their Supreme Kai counterparts can die. The Destroyer and Supreme Kai of each universe are interconnected through a Life Link, meaning if one dies, the other does too. In the past, characters like Piccolo and Kami also shared such a link. Given that Supreme Kais are weaker than Gods of Destruction, targeting the Supreme Kai would be the most effective strategy to eliminate a Destroyer. This is how Zamasu managed to do it. Although in the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime, no Destroyer has died in combat, Zeno has erased both Destroyers and their universes during the Tournament of Power.

A Destroyer’s reign isn’t limited to death; there are specific guidelines they must adhere to. If they violate these rules, the Overlord Zeno has the authority to dethrone them instantly or even eliminate them permanently. Let me enlighten you about some of these rules:

  • Two Gods of Destruction aren’t allowed to fight each other unless given permission by Zeno. The force that a battle between two Destroyers produces is enough to destroy the universe they’re in, which is why it’s so dangerous.
  • Gods of Destruction must not travel through time or allow anyone else to do so. There does seem to be some leniency with this rule though, because Beerus hasn’t stopped Goku and the Z Fighters from time-traveling. At times, Beerus even had Whis travel through time for him, such as in Dragon Ball Super episode 67, “With New Hope in His Heart – Farewell, Trunks”.
  • If a God of Destruction isn’t doing their job properly, this could be grounds for Zeno to replace them.

A more appealing scenario would be for the Destroyer to voluntarily resign and retire, as this is what Belmod intends to do, and it’s indicated in the manga that his retirement is a choice he has made.

How a New God of Destruction Is Chosen

How to Become Death, Destroyer of Worlds

In my observation, there are two established ways for a mortal to ascend to the role of a God of Destruction. Firstly, if Zeno himself chooses someone to succeed as a Destroyer deity, following the removal of the previous Destroyer in their respective universe. This selection process is rather swift, giving Zeno the liberty to decide who he believes would be an ideal replacement.

In your universe, it is Angel Marcarita who has chosen Toppo from Universe 11 to potentially assume the role of the God of Destruction in place of Belmod at a later time. This selection makes Toppo a prospective candidate for this position.

Who Are Qualified to Become Destroyers?

In contrast to Supreme Kais, the candidates for the position of God of Destruction are more diverse. This is because Destroyers can originate from any species, not just one specific one. The main prerequisite is having sufficient power. A God of Destruction’s role in the cosmos is to eradicate worlds, races, or beings that pose a threat to their universe’s evolution. Therefore, a Destroyer must possess immense strength to eliminate universal perils.

A certain type of mindset or moral code is also something to consider for someone to be fit to be a God of Destruction. If a person is too kind-hearted, they won’t be a good pick because the job literally entails them wiping out entire races and cultures, even if it is for the betterment of the universe. On the other hand, if an individual is too evil, they’re likely to just do what they want and plunge the universe into chaos.

Does Beerus Already Have a Replacement?

Does Whis Have His Eyes On Anyone?

In both the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime, Whis hasn’t found a fitting successor for Universe 7’s God of Destruction yet. While fans have long thought that it would be Goku or Vegeta, they were already given the opportunity to take the position in the manga, but they turned it down as they wanted to attain that power level independently. Whis also suggested Gohan as a potential candidate in Dragon Ball Super chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward the Future”, but Beerus expressed reservations due to Gohan’s peaceful nature, which isn’t ideal for a Destroyer’s role – possibly because he tends towards pacifism.

Absolutely not, I highly doubt it. Such a strict and disciplined person like Gohan wouldn’t be inclined towards destruction.

When you think about it, it’s actually hard to imagine Goku or Vegeta wiping out entire populations of people either, even if it was for the “greater good”. Sure, Vegeta is still a pretty rugged character who’s prone to anger, but he’s far from the murderous Saiyan prince he once was. Some might suspect Frieza a possible candidate, but that’s unlikely. Despite their job of destroying worlds, Gods of Destruction aren’t, and shouldn’t be, evil. So, for now, it’s still unclear who Beerus’ replacement will be.

Dragon Ball Super is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
