Dragon Ball Super has featured more transformations than any other Dragon Ball series, consistently introducing new forms with each major story arc. While Super Saiyan Blue was initially the primary transformation for Goku and Vegeta, they, along with characters like Frieza, Piccolo, Gohan, and Broly, have since unlocked powerful, individual forms.
Watching Dragon Ball Super, it’s become clear that the power levels have gone way up! The strongest forms now have the potential for unbelievable destruction, and each new arc just keeps raising the bar. With Goku mastering Ultra Instinct, Gohan reaching his Beast form and becoming incredibly strong, and Black Frieza being the most powerful villain we’ve ever seen in Dragon Ball, you’d think there’s nowhere left to go. But knowing this series, I have a feeling the Black Frieza Saga still has one more surprise in store for us.
Battle of Gods: Super Saiyan God
As a huge Dragon Ball fan, it’s always fascinated me that Super Saiyan God isn’t actually the ultimate power! Even after going through the whole ritual to achieve it, Goku still couldn’t beat Beerus. In the Battle of Gods movie, they actually said he was only at about 70% of Beerus’ strength, which they’ve changed a little bit since then, but it’s still amazing to think about!
Unlike most power-ups in Dragon Ball Super, a stronger form than Super Saiyan God appears relatively quickly. However, Super Saiyan God remains useful even after Goku and Vegeta achieve Super Saiyan Blue, mainly because it doesn’t require as much energy and allows for faster movement – this is especially true in the Dragon Ball Super manga.
Resurrection F: Golden Frieza
Surprisingly, Super Saiyan Blue isn’t the most powerful form in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. After training intensely for four months, Frieza achieves his Golden Frieza form, becoming stronger than both Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta – a huge leap from being weaker than Goku on Namek.
Golden Frieza’s biggest weakness is that he didn’t fully master his new form. He immediately fought Goku and Vegeta without building up enough energy or skill, which put him at a disadvantage. Although he started stronger than Super Saiyan Blue Goku, Frieza quickly ran out of stamina, allowing Goku to take over the fight despite being less powerful.
Universe 6 Tournament: Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken
In the final fight between Goku and Hit during the Universe 6 Tournament in the Dragon Ball Super anime, Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue form wasn’t fast enough to counter Hit’s time-skipping ability. To overcome this, Goku combined the Kaioken technique with Super Saiyan Blue, boosting his power enough to defeat Hit.
Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Goku is incredibly strong, but using this form puts immense strain on his body, causing a condition where his energy doesn’t recover quickly enough. Even with all that power, he recognizes that his opponent, Hit, isn’t fighting at his best, so Goku deliberately loses the match by removing himself from the competition.
Goku Black: Mastered Super Saiyan Blue
Super Saiyan Rosé is a bit more powerful than Super Saiyan Blue because Goku Black’s energy combines the power of a Kai, a God, a Saiyan, and a Super Saiyan. However, it’s not the most powerful form shown during the Goku Black Saga. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Goku secretly improves his Super Saiyan Blue, becoming strong enough to battle Fused Zamasu on equal footing.
Mastered Super Saiyan Blue gives Goku a significant advantage because he doesn’t lose energy while using the form. He’s powerful enough to almost defeat Fused Zamasu with a Hakai attack, but Zamasu stops him by taking Mai hostage. Even after learning Ultra Instinct, Goku frequently uses Mastered Super Saiyan Blue in the Dragon Ball Super manga.
Universe Survival: Ultra Instinct
The Tournament of Power was a huge turning point for both Goku and the entire Dragon Ball Super series. After a quick glimpse of Ultra Instinct during his battle with Jiren, Goku dedicates the rest of the tournament to achieving full control of the powerful, white-haired Ultra Instinct form.
During his ultimate showdown with Jiren, Goku finally achieves complete Ultra Instinct, briefly surpassing Jiren’s power. However, Goku hasn’t learned to control the technique, and the transformation quickly wears off. He’s then left to battle Jiren in his normal state, teaming up with Frieza and Android 17 for the final moments of the Tournament of Power.
Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan
Broly possesses a natural power level exceeding all other Saiyans in the Dragon Ball series. Even without any training, he was able to battle Super Saiyan God Goku and Vegeta in his normal state. Once he achieved the standard Super Saiyan form, Broly’s strength surpassed even Super Saiyan Blue Goku, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, and Golden Frieza.
After transforming into his Legendary Super Saiyan form, Broly becomes incredibly difficult to defeat. He’s so powerful that he can even adapt to fighting Gogeta in both his base form and as a Super Saiyan, ultimately pushing Gogeta to use his strongest form, Super Saiyan Blue, to win. The fact that Broly can battle the strongest fusion ever created really highlights how overwhelmingly powerful this form is.
Galactic Patrol Prisoner: Perfected Ultra Instinct
Throughout the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Goku relentlessly trains to perfect Ultra Instinct. After being defeated by Moro, his mentor Merus helps him by taking him to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. There, they begin with fundamental training to improve Goku’s mental, emotional, and physical control. By the saga’s conclusion, Goku fully grasps the core concepts of Ultra Instinct, enabling him to activate the form whenever he chooses.
Perfected Ultra Instinct unlocks Goku’s full potential, dramatically increasing his strength and speed. It even lets him create a massive energy projection of himself. Goku in this form is incredibly powerful – even Ultra Instinct Moro couldn’t physically overcome him or inflict damage. To illustrate how strong PUI Goku is, Moro actually broke his own hand trying to punch him, even after managing to pierce Goku’s chest while Goku was in Super Saiyan Blue.
Granolah the Survivor: Black Frieza
The Granolah the Survivor arc in Dragon Ball Super features a lot of powerful new forms, including Ultra Ego for Vegeta, Awakened Gas, and most impressively, Black Frieza – arguably the strongest transformation seen in the series so far. Frieza largely stayed out of the action until the very end, when he debuted his Black Frieza form.
Black Frieza is incredibly powerful. He effortlessly defeated Awakened Gas with a single blow, and then, before Goku or Vegeta could react, he knocked them both out simultaneously. He didn’t finish them off because he wasn’t actively targeting them, but he easily could have.
Super Hero: Gohan Beast
For a large part of Dragon Ball Super, Gohan struggles to regain his strength, even having difficulty transforming into a Super Saiyan during the Resurrection F saga. However, he gradually starts to fulfill his potential during the Tournament of Power and Galactic Patrol Prisoner arcs. Ultimately, he becomes the strongest of the Z-Fighters after unlocking his Gohan Beast form in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Piccolo cleverly deceives Gohan into believing his father is gone, which unlocks Gohan’s powerful new form, Gohan Beast – a unique evolution of his Ultimate form. Currently, Gohan Beast is the strongest of the main characters in Dragon Ball. He’s so strong that he defeated Goku even while Goku was using Ultra Instinct, and he was able to fight and overcome Goku, Vegeta, Broly, Goten, and Trunks all at once.
