The anime series Dragon Ball Super took a break at an exceptionally climactic moment. With the conclusion of the Granolah saga, Frieza, long anticipated by fans, reappeared in the storyline, last seen since the Tournament of Power concluded. It was then disclosed that during this time, instead of being inactive, Frieza had been ruling over a world which contained a Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This unique circumstance enabled Frieza to undergo intense training for a decade.
Observing closely, it’s evident that the relentless training spanning a decade has culminated in Frieza unlocking his astonishing Black Frieza form. This state, brimming with power, left Goku and Vegeta, both in their peak forms, reeling from a single strike. With the Black Frieza arc emerging as a compelling narrative, many fans anticipate that it opens up a chance to incorporate a beloved antagonist into the Dragon Ball universe. Let’s delve into why this could be the case.
The Black Frieza Arc Can Finally Introduce Cooler Into The Canon
The Fan-Favorite Movie Villain
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge |
---|---|
Debut Date | July 20, 1991 |
For quite some time, Cooler has been associated with the expansive Dragon Ball universe, however, he was typically portrayed as a villain outside of the main storyline. Initially introduced as Frieza’s resentful elder brother who felt overshadowed by his sibling receiving their father’s affection, Cooler allowed Goku’s spaceship to escape during the destruction of Planet Vegeta as a petty act against his brother, unaware that this very spaceship would eventually lead to his own demise.
Upon learning that his brother had been vanquished by a Saiyan, Cooler set off for Earth, intending to face Goku in a fierce battle. But when Goku transformed into Super Saiyan, Cooler’s defeat was immediate. However, Cooler didn’t meet his end there – the fragments of him eventually combined with the Big Gete Star, leading to the creation of Meta-Cooler in the movie Return of Cooler. In this sequel, Cooler came back as a cyborg, determined to annihilate Namek. This time, Goku and Vegeta teamed up to permanently defeat the villain.
Despite making an appearance in “Super Dragon Ball Heroes”, Cooler has historically been excluded from the main series, despite being a highly popular villain in the annals of “Dragon Ball”. Many fans have often compared him to a blend of Frieza and Perfect Cell. However, there’s hope that this could change when “Dragon Ball Super” resumes with the Black Frieza arc. It’s speculated that this arc could be the ideal opportunity to integrate Cooler into the canon, primarily because it centers around Frieza as the chief antagonist.
Despite Frieza’s immense strength surpassing the strongest forms of the heroes, it’s highly improbable he can face them all simultaneously. The divine techniques combined with Gohan and Broly’s unmatched power, as well as Piccolo’s strategic genius, might be too formidable for Frieza. Given these factors, it’s widely believed that Frieza will require assistance from a team to stand a chance against them.
Meet Black Frieza! Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know.
One of our potential allies could be Cooler, who would also feature his Black form. This could benefit the storyline in various ways since it would allow each hero an opportunity to showcase their abilities. Notably, Cooler, being nearly as powerful as Black Frieza, could make for excellent main adversaries for Goku and Vegeta during this storyline. Meanwhile, the other heroes might be dealing with other characters of equal strength. Among non-canon characters from the Dragon Ball series, there’s no one fans are more eager to reintroduce than Cooler.
Various characters like Janemba and Baby are well-known, but none have achieved the same level of impact as Cooler did. This is evident in the persistent requests from fans to reintroduce him in some form within the series. Although Super Dragon Ball Heroes did feature him, it was not canon content, and it’s his appearance in the main storyline of the franchise that fans are eagerly anticipating.
How Cooler Can Be Introduced Into The Canon Of The Franchise
The Way It Can Be Done
- Cooler can be introduced as Frieza’s long-lost brother.
- He can also be a Frost Demon from another universe.
As we’ve seen in Dragon Ball, surprise character backstories and retcons are common, so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Cooler to be revealed as Frieza’s older brother who has been off exploring distant parts of the universe during all these events. While this approach might seem a bit convenient, it could potentially fit within the storyline.
Instead of maintaining the status quo, a more compelling approach might be to transform Cooler into a Frost Demon from an alternate universe. This theory is supported by the fact that certain races, like the Universe 6 Saiyans, can exist across multiple universes. Therefore, it’s plausible that Cooler is merely an alternative version of Frieza from another random universe, which could account for his distinctive transformation. If Cooler were to unlock the Black state, Frieza could potentially recruit him to his team, aiming to conquer the multiverse together.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
