As a long-time fan of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, I’ve been captivated by the various fusion techniques that have graced the series throughout its history. Having grown up watching Goku and his friends battle against seemingly insurmountable odds, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the intricacies of these powerful alliances.

In the Dragon Ball universe, the Dragon Fighters have encountered numerous adversaries that forced them to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions for victory. The idea of fusion was introduced in multiple forms throughout this collection, but it was during Dragon Ball Z that Goku and Vegeta employed it in two distinct manners: Potara and Metamoran Fusion.

I’ve had the opportunity to observe and work with various programming languages throughout my career, and I’d be happy to share my perspective on how Z, GT, and Super have evolved over time.

Following Goku’s brief fight against Majin Buu and his debut of the Super Saiyan 3 form, he is compelled to go back to the Otherworld. Before departing, Goku and Piccolo decide to teach the young Saiyans the Metamoran fusion dance to help them defeat Buu. However, the story took unexpected turns due to a surprise change in the antagonist. At one point, Hercule (Mr. Satan) formed an unlikely friendship with Buu, bonding not only with him but also his dog, Bee. Unfortunately, they were both fatally wounded by some common criminals. Amazingly, Buu healed them. However, this act of kindness caused Buu to lose control and give in to his anger. Consequently, the evil within him emerged, resulting in a new form – a thin, greyish-brown Buu with menacing eyes. After a brief skirmish, Evil Buu absorbed his pudgy counterpart, leading to the birth of “Super Buu,” the skinny pink version of the demon.

The Birth of Gotenks

Super Buu threatened the Earth and searched for a formidable foe among the Dragon Fighters. Thanks to Piccolo’s swift decision-making, they obtained half an hour to prepare in the Hyperbolic Time-Chamber (also known as the Room of Evolving Time). In this chamber, Piccolo taught Goten and Trunks the intricate Metamoran fusion dance. This technique demands perfect synchronization between the dancers and will fail if their power levels aren’t aligned. Eventually, a powerful being called Gotenks emerged, but his primary challenge was his volatile temperament that embodied the worst traits of the young Saiyan hybrids.

Gotenks, with his overbearing pride and disregard for others, taunted his foe instead of giving it his all in battle. Sadly, even though they could access Super Saiyan 3 like Goku, Gotenks and Piccolo were among the first to be swallowed up by Buu. This left us needing a new approach to defeat this menace. However, this kind of fusion comes with complications: it lasts only thirty minutes before requiring an hour-long cool down. To delay Super Buu on Kami’s Lookout during this period was essential. An intriguing facet of this fusion technique is that the blended warrior doesn’t don a hybrid of both fighters’ garments, but rather wears traditional Metamoran attire.

Potara Fusion, Explained

In the Buu Saga, Gohan journeys to the realm of the Supreme Kais to hone his skills with the Z-Sword, a powerful weapon designed to vanquish Majin Buu. However, upon using it, the sword shatters, revealing Old Kai. Instead of defeating Buu with the sword, Old Kai instead awakened Gohan’s hidden abilities, transforming him into “Mystic Gohan.” Tragically, Old Kai then gave his life to revive Goku. Posthumously, Old Kai bestowed upon Goku the Potara earrings, explaining they were crafted by himself. To prove their authenticity, he granted the earrings to Kibito and Supreme Kai, resulting in the formation of Kibito Kai.

As a longtime fan of Dragon Ball Z and its intricate universe, I’ve witnessed countless epic battles between powerful warriors. Among them, the final showdown between Buu and Gohan stands out as one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the series for me.

The Drawbacks of The Two Fusion Types

Retcons and Dynamics

Goku and Vegeta benefited from an unexpected turn of events when the fusion wearing off caused Vegito to transform into a jawbreaker, which was consumed. Inside the powerful being they had become, they managed to fight Buu and save their absorbed friends. However, Old Kai hadn’t known that Potara fusions are only permanent for Supreme Kais. This detail was uncovered during Zamasu’s rampage in “Dragon Ball Super,” when Vegito was summoned once more to confront a cosmic menace but the fusion wore off after an hour. The length of the fusion is reduced if the resulting being possesses immense power, as demonstrated with Vegito Blue. The Potara earrings resurfaced during the Tournament of Power, where Caulifla and Kale employed them for their fusion into Kefla.

In Dragon Ball Super, it was introduced that a Potara fusion between a Supreme Kai and one of the fusees results in a permanent union, contrasting with the belief that Vegito’s dissolution was caused by being absorbed by Buu. The Saiyan fusions, such as Vegito Blue and Gogeta Blue from the Broly movie, can access the transformations of their fusion partners. Powerful fighters using this fusion don’t last long, but the Potara fusion aims to create stronger results regardless of ingredients. However, Vegito and Gogeta possess similar levels of power.
