Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used

Key Takeaways

  • Super Saiyan God was overshadowed by Super Saiyan Blue, making it irrelevant after its initial appearance.
  • Frieza showcased multiple transformations before settling on his iconic final form.
  • False Super Saiyan was a brief glimpse of Goku’s power that hinted at greater transformations to come.

As someone who’s grown up with Goku and his friends, it’s hard not to notice that some of the most exciting transformations in Dragon Ball Z are often forgotten or overlooked as the series progresses. It seems like the showrunners have a knack for introducing new forms just when we think we’ve seen it all, only to never mention them again.

Viewers unfamiliar with the “Dragon Ball” series may be astonished by the multitude of transformations it features, as this franchise is renowned for offering fans exhilarating transformations that significantly boost the power levels of selected combatants.

Occasionally, the anime Dragon Ball showcases numerous transformations which may seem brief compared to subsequent advancements within the same form. Following and remembering all these transformations can become quite challenging, particularly for those infrequently used ones.

8. Super Saiyan God

The First Step To Unlock Divine Ki That’s Surpassed Not Long After

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Goku, Vegeta
  • Form Debut:Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

Following a prolonged period of anticipation, enthusiasts were thrilled to witness another authentic “Dragon Ball” film, which unveiled a fresh transformation within the series. The Super Saiyan God form functioned as a conduit for Goku to access divine energy, reaching a stage where he’d dialed back to his base Super Saiyan form, but remained potent enough to engage in combat with Beerus due to the power threshold established by Super Saiyan God.

As a dedicated fan, I was anticipating that the transformation would make its grand entrance later on within the series, but surprisingly, Super Saiyan Blue emerged in Resurrection F and became the preferred form for the Saiyans throughout Dragon Ball Super. Apart from a fleeting glance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, thanks to Vegeta, this form has been somewhat sidelined since its debut.

7. Frieza’s Second & Third Transformation

A Brief Showcase Before This Tyrant Transforms Into His Last Form

  • Known User(s): Frieza
  • Form Debut:Fighting Power: One Million?? (Episode 78 of Dragon Ball Z) & Frieza’s Second Transformation (Episode 82 of Dragon Ball Z)

There’s no denying that Frieza is one of the most diabolical antagonists in the history of Dragon Ball. His brutal actions led to Goku’s rage overwhelming him as he unlocked the Super Saiyan transformation for the first time in the series. Before this moment, this tyrant did a great job of flexing his skills by showing off the sheer wealth of transformations he could use to enhance his power.

Initially, Frieza exhibited two different transformations, each boosting his power enough to instill terror in the Z Warriors. The second metamorphosis bore a resemblance to his father, while the third seemed inspired by Toriyama’s interpretation of the fearsome Xenomorph design from Alien.

6. False Super Saiyan

A Cool But Short Glimpse Into The True Power Of A Saiyan

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Goku
  • Form Debut:Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug

Lord Slug is an antagonist that a lot of people have forgotten about. The movie starring this antagonist is decent, but nothing special. However, there’s one great moment in this movie that gives viewers a taste of things to come.

Following a brutal assault by Lord Slug, the Namekian’s harsh remarks triggered an intense fury within Goku, propelling him to an unprecedented level of strength and assume a False Super Saiyan form. Although he didn’t sport the characteristic golden hair, his radiant golden aura left no doubt that Goku’s power had reached unparalleled heights at this stage.

5. Great Namekian

The Giantification Of A Namekian

  • Known User(s): Piccolo
  • Form Debut:Enter King Piccolo (Episode 102 of Dragon Ball)

Following a prolonged period of anticipation, Piccolo unveiled a fresh transformation that significantly boosted his importance once more. The moniker “Orange Piccolo” might not be the most impressive, but in this form, he certainly stands out, particularly when he recalls his ability to transform into a colossal figure to battle Cell Max.

It is evident from the fact that Piccolo himself seems to have forgotten about this ability, that the Great Namekian transformation was largely overlooked following its solitary appearance in Dragon Ball. However, Super Hero has resurrected this massive form during a kaiju battle, but it’s apparent that Piccolo won’t be employing this power imminently after this nostalgic cameo.

4. Super Saiyan Third Grade

A Saiyan Bulks Up So Much That Their Speed Is Greatly Impacted

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Goku, Future Trunks, Caulifla, Vegeta (implied)
  • Form Debut:Trunks Ascends (Episode 162 of Dragon Ball Z)

Prior to attaining the ultimate Ascended Super Saiyan state, these combatants progress through several levels. The Second Grade form is particularly beneficial as it allowed Vegeta to dismantle Semi-Perfect Cell, yet there’s another level above this that theoretically should be more powerful but is hindered by a disadvantage.

Transforming into Super Saiyan Third Grade can amplify a warrior’s power, however, this enhancement comes at the sacrifice of a Saiyan’s swiftness. Given that most combatants won’t be able to strike even once in this form, it’s not beneficial to use it. This form is mainly used to illustrate its disadvantage before it became outdated, except for a brief reappearance in Dragon Ball Super when Caulifla made the same error and learned from Goku’s experience.

3. Monster Form

Zarbon Shows Off His True Power, Only To Be Incapacitated

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Zarbon
  • Form Debut:Zarbon’s Surprise (Episode 53 of Dragon Ball Z)

In the Namek Saga, Vegeta demonstrates the strength gained from his Zenkai Boost following his initial defeat against Zarbon. Initially confident he could outmatch Frieza’s henchman, Vegeta soon realizes that Zarbon was not just a handsome minion as he transformed into an absolute beast, nearly killing Vegeta.

After gaining strength from his near-death experience, Vegeta later returns to prove his dominance over Zarbon. Interestingly, no one from Zarbon’s species is seen again following this event, suggesting that Vegeta’s Monster Form might have also been a transformation that was never used or mentioned again.

2. Super Saiyan Rage

Future Trunks Unlocks A New Form

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Future Trunks
  • Form Debut:Zamasu’s Ambition The Storied “Project 0 Mortals” of Terror (Episode 61 of Dragon Ball Super)

In simpler terms, it seems like no good fortune ever comes Trunks’ way from the future. Despite subduing the Androids and restoring a measure of peace on his planet, Earth finds itself in peril again due to Goku Black and Future Zamasu. These two characters end up killing Trunks’ mother just before he leaps to this timeline, seeking assistance from Goku and Vegeta.

In Dragon Ball Super, I find myself once more battered and bruised, but this time, my fury erupts like never before, leading me to unleash a new transformation. This metamorphosis pushes my strength nearly to the level of those Saiyans who have unlocked divine transformations. Unfortunately, the details behind this new form remain shrouded in mystery, as it’s barely explored after the Future Trunks saga, adding yet another enigma to the intricate tapestry of this captivating storyline.

1. Evil Buu

The Manifestation Of Buu’s Evil Side That Transforms Not Long After

Dragon Ball Transformations That Were Barely Used
  • Known User(s): Buu
  • Form Debut:The Evil of Men (Episode 254 of Dragon Ball Z)

Following Majin Buu’s decision to change his ways, all the wickedness within him is expelled, giving birth to a new iteration of this villain who harbors nothing but evil in his core. Despite appearing rather emaciated, Evil Buu possesses enough power to overpower his good-hearted counterpart and assimilate him.

Following this short emergence, Evil Buu metamorphoses into Super Buu, a figure many are acquainted with. Although it may not be a traditional transformation, he leaves a lasting impression with a solitary battle, demonstrating the sheer terror that Buu can invoke when undistracted.
