Dragon Ball: Why Broly vs. Jiren Isn’t Even Close

Fans have been debating the power levels in Dragon Ball ever since the manga first came out in the ’80s, and the discussions have only gotten more intense with each new story and villain. Even though the Dragon Ball Super manga is ahead of the anime, Jiren and Broly are still considered incredibly powerful characters – they’re both massive, muscular, and have simple goals, making them formidable opponents for Goku and Vegeta.

Although they battled in the movie Dragon Ball Super Heroes, Goku and Vegeta have never faced off in the main Dragon Ball series, and it’s hard to picture a situation where they would. That hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about who would win, though! A fight between them would be incredibly intense, and realistically, only one of them would likely survive – even considering Dragon Ball‘s tendency to avoid permanently killing characters.

A Battle Of Dragon Ball’s Ultimate Powerhouses

Who Is Stronger Between Broly And Jiren?

    • Broly’s First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
    • Jiren’s First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super, Episode 85, “The Universes Go Into Action — Each With Their Own Motives”

Despite their different strengths and skills, Broly and Jiren actually have a lot in common. When they first appeared, both were significantly more powerful than Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms, easily overpowering them. They both demonstrated that incredible strength doesn’t necessarily require God Ki.

As a Dragon Ball fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about the biggest fights lately, and it’s amazing how both Jiren and Broly pushed Goku and Vegeta to completely new levels! Everyone’s debating whether Goku going Ultra Instinct against Jiren was more impressive than Vegeta and Goku fusing into Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to fight Broly, and it’s true – neither of them could have won without a massive power-up. But digging into the manga and looking at everything closely, I’m starting to think Broly might actually be even stronger, at least as things stand right now. It’s a really exciting time to be a fan!

The manga confirms that having a higher divine power level isn’t necessary to overcome someone using divine techniques. For example, Beast Gohan and Granolah were so fast that Goku’s Ultra Instinct couldn’t keep up with their attacks. This suggests that if Broly had continued to grow stronger, he could have eventually surpassed Goku even while Goku was using Ultra Instinct.

At first, Jiren put up a good fight, but by the end, Goku with Ultra Instinct was clearly holding back against him. Also, Goku and Vegeta were much stronger when fighting Broly than they were during the Tournament of Power, thanks to their Zenkai Boosts. This makes Broly’s dominant victory over them, even in his base form, even more remarkable than previously believed.

I really thought I was reaching my strongest, but then someone even more powerful appeared! He’s likely stronger than Beerus, actually.

To beat Broly, even the incredibly powerful Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta was necessary. This form isn’t just the combined strength of Goku and Vegeta; the fusion dance gave them an additional power increase. Some believe the regular Super Saiyan fusion could have won, but Gogeta chose to go Blue to finish the fight quickly and decisively. Considering all of this, Broly’s ability to last as long as he did proves just how strong he is, especially since Gogeta is more powerful than even Ultra Instinct Goku.

Some people argue Jiren defeated Golden Frieza much faster than he fought Broly, who lasted an hour. However, the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero explains that Jiren’s power level during the tournament wasn’t actually that much higher than Goku’s or Vegeta’s – he was simply far better at controlling his energy. Jiren knew how to use his power efficiently, while Broly, in his uncontrollable Berserker form, just attacked wildly without strategy. When it comes to raw fighting strength, Broly is the more powerful of the two.

Will It Always Stay Like This? Will Broly Always Be Stronger Than Jiren?

What’s The Answer To This In The Current Setting?

It’s fairly obvious who would win based on what we’ve seen in the series so far, but predicting how a fight between them would go is complicated by the current storyline. Broly is much better at controlling his powerful Berserker form now, but we haven’t seen anything about Jiren’s training or abilities since the Tournament of Power finished.

Jiren is an incredibly skilled fighter with exceptional control over his abilities, so it’s possible he’s developed a form of Ultra Instinct as well. After witnessing Goku achieve it during the tournament, Jiren may have spent years training to unlock it himself. Given his naturally calm and focused demeanor, he might even be able to master it more easily than Goku. If he’s either unlocked Ultra Instinct or another power boost, the discussion about his abilities will likely resurface.

What Does Super Dragon Ball Heroes Have To Say?

The Promo Anime Picks A Clear Winner (But It Is Not Relevant In More Ways Than One)

As a huge Dragon Ball fan, you probably already know Jiren and Broly actually did fight – but it’s a bit of a weird situation. It happened in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, which is this promotional anime series. It’s official, but it’s not part of the main story, so it doesn’t really count. That fight is in the same tournament where we see Super Saiyan Blue Goku battle Super Saiyan 4 Goku, and it’s the arc where they surprisingly gave Yamcha some screen time! Honestly, Super Dragon Ball Heroes is more for fun and shouldn’t be taken as serious canon.

What’s really important is that Jiren fought the older version of Broly from the original Dragon Ball Z series, not the newer, more powerful version from Dragon Ball Super. That’s why it makes sense Jiren would easily win – the original Broly wasn’t nearly as strong. Honestly, it would have been surprising if Jiren lost to that Broly.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
