Highlights

  • DQ3’s plot is iconic and includes swerves and diverse character interactions.
  • New scenarios in the remake focus on Ortega, which flesh out DQ3’s already-famous story.
  • Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake needs to balance Ortega’s new story content properly to preserve the spirit of the original game.

As a longtime fan of the Dragon Quest series, I can confidently say that the upcoming Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has me both excited and slightly apprehensive. On one hand, the addition of voice acting, multiple difficulty levels, and new content like superbosses is enough to make any RPG enthusiast’s heart race. But on the other hand, I can’t help but worry that Square Enix might overstep its bounds when it comes to adding new scenarios for Ortega.

Following years of anticipation, the highly-awaited Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is nearly within reach! Embracing one of Square Enix’s most successful strategies for their contemporary “retro” turn-based RPGs, the timeless classic Dragon Quest 3 has never looked more inviting. The growing popularity and recognition of the Dragon Quest series, particularly thanks to Dragon Quest 11, in the Western world makes this an opportune moment to introduce this iconic title, which has been remade several times before, possibly in its ultimate form.

In an effort to ensure this remake stands out, Square Enix has gone all out to modernize Dragon Quest 3, making it as contemporary as any other current game. This includes voice acting in various languages, different levels of difficulty, completely revamped graphics, and even the addition of superbosses for this HD-2D Remake. What’s more, the original games, Dragon Quest 1 and 2, are also being remade as prequels and sequels to Dragon Quest 3. However, it’s important for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake not to overstep its bounds when enhancing the game’s original storyline.

Dragon Quest Has A Very Particular Relationship With Story

In essence, Dragon Quest games are often recognized for their straightforward narratives, aligning with their role as traditional fantasy role-playing games that focus on a team of adventurers exploring dungeons and battling to save their world. While its stories and characters are significant, it’s common to perceive Dragon Quest as having simpler plots compared to titles like Final Fantasy and other RPG contemporaries. However, contrary to popular belief, Dragon Quest 3 made a substantial contribution to the series’ storytelling that many underestimate.

Dragon Quest 3’s Plot Is Too Iconic To Mess Up

In my gaming days, learning that Dragon Quest 3 was actually a prequel to its Erdrick Trilogy counterparts was quite the revelation. The game took more intricate turns compared to Dragon Quest 1 and 2, and although those twists might appear simple today, it was revolutionary for a game released close to Final Fantasy 1, considering its large cast of characters contributing to multiple storylines. The main hero even gets embroiled in the narrative, stepping into the shoes of their legendary father, Ortega, while simultaneously trying to unravel his fate. That’s where Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D comes into play.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake’s New Scenarios Are Risky Endeavors

The upcoming installments for the revamped version of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will delve deeper into Ortega’s initial adventure, providing additional context for his significant journey and encounters with specific characters. Given the frequent mentions of Ortega’s actions or rumors regarding him in the original Dragon Quest 3, this expansion to the remake is highly anticipated. It could significantly alter the backstories of certain minor characters hinted at in the original game, and allow players to engage with several unique enemies that are exclusive to Ortega’s quest. However, this addition also presents a considerable risk.

New Story Elements Could Make Or Break Dragon Quest’s Remakes

The significance of Dragon Quest 3 within its series is undeniable; it’s safe to say that Dragon Quest 3 (DQ3) has played a crucial role in shaping Japanese gaming culture. Any additional details added to DQ3’s narrative will be closely examined, as they may enhance the world-building and potentially connect to the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, thereby improving the overall Erdrick Trilogy. However, these additions could also disrupt the original pace and tone of DQ3. At this point, it’s hard to predict the outcome, but if the remake (Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake) is treated with as much care as its development suggests, everything should turn out well in the end.
