Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Respects the Original Game's Masterpiece Status

As a dedicated fan of the Dragon Quest series who has traversed countless worlds and vanquished countless foes, I am thrilled to hear about the impending release of the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. It’s been quite a journey since my first encounter with the original game in 1988, and I can attest that it laid the very foundation for the JRPG genre as we know it today.

The remastered version of Dragon Quest 3, titled “Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake,” aims to revitalize a cherished JRPG classic with fresh storylines, updated visuals, and enhanced mechanics. The enchanting realm of Dragon Quest 3 will be revisited later this year, ensuring that its timeless appeal remains unmatched while incorporating new elements

During an interview at Gamescom, producer Masaaki Hayasaka (translated) shared that this upcoming project is designed to honor the spirit of Dragon Quest 3. The team aims to maintain a strong connection to the original while incorporating fresh and contemporary elements. Hayasaka emphasized the need for careful modifications to uphold the game’s legacy and please its fans

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Doesn’t Make Changes Without a Good Reason

The classic game “Dragon Quest 3,” released in 1988, is often credited as laying the groundwork for traditional Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs). Unlike its predecessors, this game takes place several years before the series’ initial installments and follows a hero on a mission to vanquish the malevolent spirit Baramos. Players can select from traditional roles such as Soldier, Wizard, or Merchant, and they may also recruit up to three additional party members during their journey across the world. The game was groundbreaking in its time, and the developers behind the remake, including Hayasaka, understand the significance of this title and only make changes when necessary to preserve its essence

Our primary goal is to preserve the original’s greatness by maintaining its unique qualities that made it a masterpiece. We recognized the risk of altering things, as people might question the changes and express disappointment, saying, “This isn’t what we remembered; this wasn’t how it used to be.” To prevent such reactions, we aimed to keep our modifications minimal

Dragon Quest 3’s Legacy Will be Preserved

For Hayasaka, the response from fans is absolutely crucial, and he recognizes the challenge in updating such an iconic game while maintaining its essence. To draw in new players, we’re considering adjusting difficulty settings, incorporating user-friendly enhancements, and adopting a visual style akin to Octopath Traveler. However, these changes aren’t made without careful thought; each one significantly influences the overall gaming experience. Hayasaka went on to explain

“”We carefully considered every new element we introduced to ensure it wasn’t just an arbitrary addition. Our goal was to ensure these elements harmonized with the distinctive style of the Dragon Quest series, and that they served a meaningful purpose within this specific project.”

In addition to enhancing the graphics, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is also introducing new story elements, demonstrating the team’s dedication to creating a captivating, unique gaming experience for players. Hayasaka emphasizes that these changes have built upon the original content rather than replacing it, making for an incredibly enticing development.
