As a seasoned adventurer who’s spent countless hours exploring the enchanting lands of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, I can confidently say that the Sage Vocation is undeniably the cream of the crop. With a blend of magic and divine might, the Sage truly encapsulates the best aspects of both Mage and Priest Vocations.

In retrospect, the original “Dragon Quest” game marked the introduction of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) to the global audience. The main character in this game was a lone adventurer who ultimately saved the day.

In the second installment, they presented a trio of characters, each with unique skills. However, it was “Dragon Quest III” that elevated gameplay to unprecedented levels, quickly earning its place as a timeless classic.

In Dragon Quest III, the Vocation system was introduced, which is the series’ mechanism for character classes. This feature allowed players to tailor their party members with diverse Vocations, resulting in a harmonious and versatile team.

Subsequently, the remake of Dragon Quest III in HD-2D enhanced the Vocations with fresh abilities and even introduced a novel one, known as the Monster Wrangler. Each Vocation possesses distinctive advantages and proficiencies; however, some continue to outshine others over an extended playthrough.

In our setup, we omitted the unique “Hero Occupation” as it is reserved solely for the main character. Consequently, each member of the team should possess their own distinct role or occupation.

9 Gadabout

Too Much Of A Clown

In the classic game Dragon Quest III, the character known as Gadabout was particularly beneficial for players aiming to transform swiftly into a Sage. This is because the Gadabout is the sole Vocation that can metamorphose into the most powerful wizard without requiring any special Key Item.

In the updated version, the clown character now possesses several distinctive abilities, such as the Kerplunk Dance which may prove useful in certain situations. However, it’s uncertain if the Gadabout will obey your instructions consistently.

Occasionally, the Vocation might decide to play a trick instead of carrying out the chosen order during its turn, a move that can disrupt any planned strategy, especially when it interferes with our own team members’ actions.

scarcely can the actions of the Gadabout be relied upon to either aid the team or attack foes, rendering this Profession particularly untrustworthy, especially in a strategy game where each move is crucial.

8 Merchant

Everyone Has A Price

The Trader is quite useful, and I’m not sure even the Deity realizes how beneficial my Profession was in amassing additional gold at the start of the game due to its occasional passive feature that rewards extra gold following battles.

Nevertheless, the Merchant falls short in terms of fighting skills. While they can wield certain Warrior weapons such as the Spear, this equipment doesn’t significantly boost their battle abilities.

This entity boasts certain useful functions as compensation, such as the “Service Call” feature, which allows you to bring a merchant, innkeeper, or priest even when you’re not in a town.

As a dedicated player, I must admit that mastering this game sometimes feels elusive, but there’s one thing I can always count on – the comfort of taking a breather while traversing the expansive realm of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, especially when my MP runs low. This momentary respite is an unexplainable bliss indeed.

7 Warrior

Good Old Fighter

Originally in Dragon Quest III, the Warrior character wasn’t very powerful as it could only perform basic attacks. But luckily, during the remake of the game, the Warrior was granted special abilities of its own.

The sturdiest Vocation now boasts some standout slash skills, including an area attack, a preemptive strike ability, and even the notorious Metal Slash.

As a dedicated fan, I’d say, “Not only does the Warrior have a knack for taking hits, but also it can stand tall as a shield, absorbing damage meant for my comrades or even deflecting all incoming assaults in one swift move.

There’s a downside to all of this. If the Warrior repeatedly absorbs every attack, especially those targeting the whole party, its chances of surviving a turn are slim, turning it into more of a burden than a useful Vocation.

6 Martial Artist

Dragon Ball Power

In the classic game Dragon Quest III, the Martial Artist character stood out as an effective substitute for a Warrior due to two key factors: firstly, like the Warrior, the Martial Artist didn’t possess a wide range of abilities; however, it made up for this by dealing more damage in combat. Secondly, the Martial Artist had a higher chance of scoring critical hits, which significantly increased its effectiveness in battles.

In the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, I found myself embodying a Martial Artist, a character distinct from the Warrior. The skills this character wields are specialized, with an emphasis on strategically targeting specific enemy types and engaging in close combat without weapons – a tradeoff for defensive capabilities.

At first glance, a Martial Artist might appear feeble due to the time required to obtain suitable weaponry. However, if you’re skilled enough to locate the hidden Golden Claws within the Pyramid, you’ll have access to powerful weapons sooner.

However, towards the final stages, the boxer stands out as an exceptional Profession for dishing out raw physical damage, a crucial aspect considering that certain late-game foes can be quite formidable.

5 Mage

Brains Over Brawn

Among the aspects I enjoy most in Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) is leveraging an enemy’s vulnerabilities, and when it comes to this tactic, there’s hardly anyone more proficient than a Mage character.

In Dragon Quest III HD-2D, the Mage’s array of abilities – flames, frost, gusts, detonations, and even dragon transformations – are specifically crafted to annihilate opponents, be they solitary or numerous. For enemies that resist magic, you can always fall back on debuffs as a dependable alternative.

As a gamer, I can tell you that one thing to keep in mind when playing as a Mage is their delicate nature. Sometimes, you might find yourself ambushed by enemies who’ll swarm and attack an unsuspecting spellcaster like me, leaving me with no chance to defend or retaliate. It’s a harsh reality of the game world!

As the final battle approaches, there’s not much need for a Mage in my team when I can have a Sage instead, as the Sage seems to be a more powerful and valuable vocation in the long run. So, having a Mage is essentially a transitional phase towards a superior choice.

4 Priest

Everyone Needs A Healer

You can’t build an RPG party and leave the healer out. That’s simply unthinkable. The dedicated healer of Dragon Quest III HD-2D is the Priest, and this Vocation excels at its role.

Among the characters, excluding the Hero and the Sage, the Priest stands out as an exceptional choice for your party due to its abilities in mending wounds, rejuvenating energy, banishing afflictions, enhancing strength, and on occasion, inflicting damage. Its healing and nurturing qualities are unquestionable.

Apart from being a reliable option, the Priest also stands out as a strong contender for the role of a Sage. This is due to its magic-centric traits and array of supportive spells that seamlessly transform it into an advanced caster.

Just as the Mage acts as a transitional role before becoming the Sage, so too does the Priest serve as an intermediate step. Acquiring the essential Knowledge Items, or Wisdom in this case, is what will enable your transformation. However, for adventurous souls like you, locating the item should not pose any significant challenge.

3 Thief

Countering Old-School Mechanics

The Thief character is more valuable in the game, primarily for its usefulness within the game’s structure, rather than for its combat skills alone.

A Thief character becomes indispensable when seeking Mini Medals in the game Dragon Quest III HD-2D, or if you’re aiming to find valuable items hidden in secluded areas. Exploring for high-powered equipment is significantly more gratifying compared to simply increasing your character’s levels through repetitive battles.

One great aspect is that you can acquire these abilities and subsequently switch the Thief’s Profession towards a more battle-oriented role, merging the strengths from each realm.

2 Monster Wrangler

Befriending The Enemy

In the updated version of Dragon Quest III HD-2D, the newly added vocation is extraordinarily potent, yet its effectiveness varies greatly based on the situation. This is due to the fact that its power increases as more monsters are recruited within the game.

If you don’t intend on pursuing monster hunting, it might be best to avoid this Vocation as it may not fully develop without active participation. On the other hand, if you’re into monster hunting, this would be an essential addition to your team.

Initially, the Monster Tamer acquires the ‘Animal Sense’ skill, enabling them to detect if a friendly creature is hidden close by.

As a passionate admirer, let me share that what truly sets the Monster Wrangler apart are its combat skills. We’ve got healing, debuffing, and attacking abilities – quite the versatile toolkit! However, it’s the Monster Pile-On ability that elevates this Vocation to a second rank. This unique feature allows us to rally monsters together, making us an unstoppable force in battle!

This card, titled “Monster Synergy Boost,” amplifies its damage based on the number of monsters you have enlisted in your team. What makes it even more formidable is that the damage is predominantly raw, ensuring a consistently high damage output against enemies, except for special cases like Metal Slimes where their unique resistances may apply.

In confrontations with final bosses, my Hero dished out roughly 500 damage using their most potent abilities. However, the Monster Wrangler managed to deal over 700 damage with a move called Monster Pile-On. It’s important to note that this can only be achieved once all 121 monsters have been recruited.

1 Sage

The Best Of Both Worlds

It’s quite surprising that the “hidden” Profession turns out to be the most potent one, isn’t it? The Wise One, being a blend of Sorcerer and Cleric, acquires spells from both Professions while wielding stronger weapons and armor than their counterparts.

There’s nothing enigmatic about this. If you’ve been developing a Priest or Mage character, it’s only logical to evolve them into a Sage.

To become a Sage isn’t just about showing up at Alltrades Abbey and asking for a job change. Instead, I must meet one of two conditions: either I need to elevate my Gadabout character to level 20 or discover and employ the mysterious Words of Wisdom Key Item.

In all my playthroughs, I only found three Words of Wisdom, making them highly scarce items. The ideal strategy is to transform one character into a Sage and never touch their Vocation again.

The alternative is turning a Gadabout into a Sage. However, unlike a Priest or Mage, the Gadabout’s attributes aren’t spellcasting-focused, which may result in a Sage weaker than desired.

Among all the professions in the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, the Sage remains unrivaled, with the exception of the Hero Vocation. This exceptional vocation boasts a powerful set of skills such as Kazap, Gigaslash, and an incredibly useful healing spell called Omniheal.
