Square Enix is bringing an AI chatbot to their game Dragon Quest 10. This chatbot will appear as a ‘Chatty Slime’ and will be able to interact with players, powered by Gemini AI.
Dragon Quest 10 is an online multiplayer game that’s only available in Japan. It’s the only major Dragon Quest game that hasn’t been translated into English for players outside of Japan. While a single-player version called Dragon Quest 10 Offline came out in 2022, it’s currently only accessible in Asia and also lacks an English version.
Honestly, maybe it’s a good thing Dragon Quest 10 never got an English release. It looks like it’s about to get the AI treatment whether we like it or not! Apparently, Square Enix is working with Google to stick a Gemini-powered chatbot right into the game, and I’m not really sure why. It just feels forced, you know?
Dragon Quest 10 Is Adding An AI Chatbot Companion

Dragon Quest 10 is planning to introduce a Chat Slime, a cute, iconic character from the series, that acts as an AI companion. Powered by Gemini, this chatbot will interact with players, offering a unique experience alongside the game’s traditional multiplayer features.
This chatbot is designed to understand the context of the game to have more natural conversations with players, and it might even start conversations on its own. This is similar to how the game Where Winds Meet lets players chat with AI characters, making them feel like they’re talking to a real person.
This character is an AI chatbot powered by Gemini, designed to interact with players in a massively multiplayer online game – even though the game is meant to be played with real people.
This idea isn’t new – several older Dragon Quest games featured a “Party Chat” system. This allowed players to talk with their companions and get their thoughts on what was happening, but these conversations were pre-written, not created on the fly.

Adding the AI chatbot ‘slime’ to the game feels unnecessary and like a tech demo rather than a helpful feature. It’s hard to see how it will attract new players to Dragon Quest 10, especially since the game already focuses on social interaction. While an AI companion might work in a single-player game, fans would likely prefer engaging, fully developed characters with compelling stories and voice acting over a chatbot that simply provides information.
