Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done

Highlights

  • Wolverine has made some terrible decisions, like getting involved in a toxic love triangle with Jean Grey and Cyclops.
  • Logan’s parenting skills are abysmal, as he rejected and even killed his many sons without knowing they were his own.
  • Trusting Sabertooth and facing Magneto head-on were disastrous choices, showcasing Wolverine’s tendency for bad decisions in tough situations.

As someone who has followed Wolverine’s adventures for decades, I’ve come to know the complex and often conflicting nature of Logan’s character. While there are countless moments where his bravery, determination, and unyielding spirit have left us in awe, there are also instances that make us scratch our heads and wonder, “What was he thinking?”

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the enduring legacy of Wolverine, one of the most renowned superheroes in existence. While Hugh Jackman delivers an impressive portrayal of this nearly indestructible mutant on the big screen, his character interpretation deviates significantly from the comic book version that I hold dear.

As a long-time fan of the X-Men comics, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Wolverine’s incredible journey and growth over the years. Yet, despite his impressive feats and unyielding determination, our favorite mutant with retractable claws has made some questionable decisions throughout his career as an X-Man and freelancer. In this piece, we’ll delve into some of James Howlett’s most regrettable actions – both from the current canon and alternate character versions hailing from various timelines and realities.

1 The Jean Grey/Scott Summers Love Triangle

One Of His Worst Ideas Ever

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: X-Men #7
  • Author: Jonathan Hickman
  • Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

During the Krakoa Era of X-Men, fans were thrilled as Wolverine and Cyclops finally reconciled after numerous reboots. However, observant readers have pointed out that this peace between Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Cyclops may involve a complicated romantic situation – potentially a love triangle, which could lead to unwanted complications.

For the X-Men’s relationship and even their team, this issue ranks high among potential threats. Wolverine bears the burden of numerous vengeful ex-lovers who could betray him at any moment. The looming shadow of a love triangle between these three X-Men brings with it a toxic brew of problems, and the future does not look promising based on past experiences.

2 Rejecting (And Even Killing) His Many Sons

Worst Parent Ever, By Far

  • Issue: Several Issues
  • Author: Several Authors
  • Artist: Several Artists

Wolverine had numerous romantic relationships and produced a large number of offspring throughout his life. Unfortunately, he was often unaware of their existence, having left them behind. It’s unfortunate to say, but Wolverine doesn’t make for a great father figure, as demonstrated in various instances. One particularly notable example occurred during the Earth-616 timeline when he faced off against the Mongrels, a gang of his abandoned children, who had been raised and trained by The Red Hand with the intention of killing Logan.

I was rooting for Wolverine as he faced off against those enemies, but little did I know they were his own children. Regrettably, I’ve come to realize that throughout James Howlet’s action-packed career, he hasn’t been the best father figure. He took the life of Daken, the son he shared with Itsu, only to be left with regret and longing as he wept over his lifeless body.

3 Trusting Sabertooth (More Than Once)

Fool Me Once, Shame On You, Fool Me Twice…

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • First Appearance: Iron Fist #14
  • Author: Chris Claremont
  • Artist: John Byrne

Throughout their tumultuous history marked by numerous collaborations, Wolverine and Sabretooth often found themselves working as a team. Unfortunately, the outcomes were usually disastrous for Logan. During the “The First X-Men” storyline, penned by Neal Adams and Christos Gage in 2012, Wolverine and Sabretooth are depicted leading a group of early X-Men recruits.

Without a doubt, their encounter didn’t go well, resulting in a fierce battle between the two. Sadly, this wasn’t an isolated incident for Wolverine and Sabretooth. Their connection is intricate and fraught with conflict. Moreover, Sabretooth, who knows Logan better than most, is the one who can inflict him with the greatest pain.

4 Facing Magneto Head-On

Man Made Of Metal Challenges Human Magnet…

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: X-MEN #25 1991 Run
  • Author: Fabian Nicieza
  • Artist: Andy Kubert

In the intriguing realm of the X-Men, one character stands out for his formidable ability to manipulate metal and magnetism – Magneto. Classified as Level Omega due to his immense power, it left Wolverine, with his indestructible Adamantium skeleton, pondering how he could possibly go up against such a natural adversary.

As I faced off against Magneto on his extraterrestrial fortress with my X-Men teammates, I squared up to him, ready for a brutal showdown. But Magneto had other plans; with a flick of his wrist, he sent me reeling like an insignificant insect. He then set out to teach me a bitter lesson, shredding every last molecule of my indestructible Adamantium claws and skeleton, leaving me on the brink of disintegration. If not for Professor Xavier and Jean Grey’s timely intervention, I would have been pushed to the edge of insanity from this harrowing ordeal.

5 Challenging The Hulk

A Battle Between Two Immortals Caused Hundreds Of Casualties

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • First Appearance: The Incredible Hulk (May ’62)
  • Author: Stan Lee
  • Artist: Jack Kirby

In every interaction between Wolverine and The Hulk, it’s been made abundantly clear that the Hulk disregards damage to property and people. Over the course of their numerous battles, The Hulk has obliterated innumerable buildings and cities, and in one instance, caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent bystanders during a traffic jam triggered by their uncontrolled clashes.

The losses inflicted severe repercussions on the Hulk, and some of these losses served to lengthen the roster of adversaries Wolverine had amassed over time. Consequently, Logan’s solitary choice to confront these issues without any backup plan has proven disastrous.

6 Unleashing The Fastball Special On Several Indestructible Beings

Didn’t Work As Intended…

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: Uncanny X-Men #159
  • Author: Chris Claremont
  • Artist: Dave Cockrum

Wolverine’s devoted fans are well-versed in the Fastball Special, the iconic team-up move between Logan and Colossus, designed for defeating formidable foes. However, this potent maneuver comes with significant risk, as demonstrated when these two heroes attempted it against overpowering adversaries.

An especially disastrous encounter unfolded between Dracula, the formidable Vampire Lord, and Colossus and Wolverine. In a desperate bid to vanquish the ancient vampire, they tried a risky maneuver at the last moment. However, Dracula merely dismissed their attempt with an indifferent shrug, leaving Wolverine looking foolish as he ended up biting grass instead.

7 Tried To Murder Scott Summers

Went Off The Deep End Here

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: Hellfire and Brimstone/Return of The King
  • Author: Mark Millar
  • Artist: Adam Kubert

After a heated argument between Logan and Scott reaches a boiling point, Charles Xavier comes up with a clever solution. He assigns them both to a team mission in the uninhabited part of the Savage Land. Xavier believed that working together would mend their past hurts and bring about reconciliation. However, as Scott teetered on the brink of a cliff, clinging for survival, Wolverine contemplated, “This is my moment to win Jean over for myself permanently.”

Instead of “Wolverine didn’t whisper ‘Long live the King,’ but rather allowed Scott to fall to his supposed death and went back to X-Academy without Cyclops, surprising the rest of the team,” you could say:

8 Tried To Make A Move On Mary Jane Watson (On Many Occasions)

Logan At His Lowest

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: Spider-Man: The Other
  • Author(s): Peter David -Reginald Hudlin – J. Michael Straczynski
  • Artist (s): Mike Deodato – Pat Lee – Mike Wieringo

As a longtime fan of Marvel comics, I’ve witnessed many intriguing storylines throughout the years. One that continues to captivate me is the complicated relationship between Mary Jane Watson (Earth 616) and Wolverine (Logan). Despite knowing that she was married to Peter Parker (Spiderman), Logan couldn’t help but pursue her relentlessly. If fans found this behavior disrespectful or unsavory, they would be underestimating the complexity of Wolverine’s character.

After Peter’s tragic passing in the hospital room following his battle against Morlun, Mary Jane wept inconsolably. In an ill-timed attempt to console her, Logan made a pass at her. She reacted with a slap, and when Jarvis questioned Logan about his actions, he explained that he was trying to provoke MJ into hitting him, hoping it would help her deal with her grief. However, this explanation did not sit well with anyone.

9 Betraying Captain America And Siding With The Bad Guys

They Never Made Up After This

Dumbest Things Wolverine Has Done
  • Issue: Wolverine: Origins #20
  • Author: Daniel Way
  • Artist: Steve Dillon

During World War II, Logan’s most foolish act was siding with Baron Von Strucker and Hydra against Captain America. After tracking down Von Strucker’s hideout, Wolverine received orders from his clandestine employers, leading him to deceive Cap and his team. The startled viewers watched as Wolverine unwillingly surrendered Captain America to the enemy.

Later on, it became clear that Romulus, an ancient and menacing mutant, orchestrated the entire scheme. Regrettably, this revelation does not absolve Steve Rogers from his unwise and cowardly betrayal. The most disheartening aspect was that Steve had developed a growing respect for James Howlett and considered him a friend.
